Thank you to the entire ACG School Jakarta community for supporting the Family Picnic event last Saturday. It was great to have parents, students, teachers and friends together to celebrate the start of the academic year and continue to build our strong community. The event also provided an opportunity for new families and teachers to meet returning families and teachers. We look forward to the year ahead and hope to see everyone at our next whole school event. See more photos on page 14. August Newsletter

Message from the Principal Dear Parents and Caregivers, We are now three weeks into the school year and it has been pleasing to see our teachers and students settle into routines and engage in quality teaching and learning. We encourage all of our students and parents to be active in seeking information and interact and communicate with teachers and school leaders in a range of different ways. We recognize that people do not learn in the same way and a range of methods should be used to accommodate different learning styles. When gathering information about the School or your son / daughter’s learning at school, there are a number of ways to do this. This newsletter can be accessed via our parent portal. The School’s website has information for new and returning families, including details of our revised Mission, Vision, Philosophy and Values. When visiting our website, you can also catch up on all the latest social media news and event information. Another method of receiving information is via direct email; and we ask that you notify the school if your email details change. It is important for us to have email contact with you so that we can make you aware of special events and activities coming up that are specifically designed for parents. If you are a WhatsApp user, you can join the ACG School Jakarta WhatsApp group. We use ManageBac to take attendance, record assessment data, plan our units, and report on student progress for all students. Parents can login to ManageBac, where they can access student reports and attendance for their child(ren). In addition, the Secondary school uses ManageBac to show students’ timetables, issue assessment tasks, provide a calendar of summative assessments, and make course outlines and assessment schedules available to students and parents. In Primary, a record of student learning is kept on the online Seesaw application. We encourage parents to view this weekly to see what has been taught, as well as take note of any upcoming events. Access for parents is available via the Seesaw Family application, which is available as an app for iPhone and Android, as well as on your web browser. For information about how you can access your child’s portfolio, please contact their Homeroom Teacher. Teachers and parents may also communicate via the Seesaw chat feature built into the application.

Message from the Vice Principal - Primary Dear Parents and Caregivers, I’d like to thank everybody who attended our Family Picnic last Saturday. It was a great experience and a lovely time to get to know one another, have fun, and watch some wonderful student performances. I also would like to thank all of the organizers of the event, including our ACG Community Group volunteers, who helped put on a well-run and exciting event. I’m already looking forward to next year’s ACG School Jakarta Family Picnic! This month, our teachers have been busily conducting diagnostic assessments on all students in Years 1-6. Diagnostic assessment data helps us understand each student’s individual strengths and areas for growth. We use this diagnostic data to help us plan instruction and move each child forward, meeting them where they are and focusing on their individual needs. We have conducted diagnostic assessments in the areas of reading, writing, spelling, and mathematics. Teachers will be sharing this diagnostic assessment data with parents in mid-September. This year, we have introduced a new reading assessment, Fountas and Pinnell’s Benchmark Reading Assessment System, which assesses students on levels A to Z. We are very excited about this new system as it will allow us to better cater for our readers’ needs. In previous years, we have used the PM Reading Assessment System at ACG School Jakarta. We are in the process of relabelling all of our levelled readers to our new A to Z system. Information about the A-Z levels, the new reading assessment system, as well as your child’s reading level will be communicated to you next month. I welcome you to speak to your homeroom teacher, Senior Teacher- PYP, or me about this change. In line with our new diagnostic assessments, we have put a larger emphasis on literacy and mathematics this year. As I mentioned in last month’s message, we have adopted the Cambridge Primary Curriculum Framework for English and Mathematics and aligned it to the PYP Framework. We are using these outcomes to help drive the literacy and math instruction happening in the classroom. More information about the Cambridge integration will be shared at the Parents as Learners workshop on 4 October 2019. We encourage all Primary parents to attend, as this will give you more information about the learning outcomes being taught in our Year 1-6 classrooms, our rationale for this decision, and how this will affect your child(ren). Lastly, I would like to recognize one of our students in Year 4 for his student-led action this month. Theo Silva in 4B created an ACG School Jakarta newspaper, which he printed on recycled paper, in line with our school’s environmentally- sustainable values. The newspaper was all Theo’s idea. He made plans and drafts, took photographs and interviewed people, and produced a wonderful newspaper about our school. We look forward to many more issues of our ACG School Jakarta newspaper. Well done, Theo!

Clean Up Jakarta Day 2019 Building on last year’s Clean Up Jakarta Day event, our students arrived at school very early on Sunday morning to clean the streets in the Warung Jati area. Led by Pak Herry, they worked collaboratively with sub-district volunteers to collect recyclable and non-recyclable waste in the neighborhood. Thanks to many students and parents, they collected 78kg of rubbish. It was great to see so many people from the community. It seems the message to refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle is having an impact on us all. We now look forward to Hari Bersih Indonesia on 21 September. We hope you come along to help us clean up Jakarta!

Learning at ACG School Jakarta IBDP Retreat Our third Annual IBDP Student Retreat took place Monday and Tuesday of week two in Bogor. Students in Year 12 and 13 participated in workshops dedicated to the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity and Service. Sessions on Student Leadership, as well as organizational skills and time management, were included. The highlight, though, was the sense of camaraderie developed amongst all students involved.
Learner Profile of the Month Caring The aim of the IB PYP and DP Programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world (International Baccalaureate Organization 2013).
Caring individuals are those who show empathy, compassion and respect. They have a commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us. In the month of September we are all striving to be more caring towards each other, the environment, and our local and global community.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Risk-Takers: August Learner Profile of the Month
This month we focused on developing the learner profile attribute of risk-taker. When we are risk-takers we approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change. Check out some of the ways that our Primary School students are risk-takers.
I am a risk taker. I can share my learning with the class.
We are risk-takers. We try new things, like trying to ride a bicycle with only 2 wheels.
Risk-takers We were Risk-takers because we ran even though we may lose the election, get last place, or even worse get no votes at all. We didn’t know who would win, so it was a risk.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Primary Student Leadership Our Student Leadership Programme provides students with an opportunity to take a leading role in the school in order to help other students, offer suggestions for how to improve our school, or make a difference in the community. The two avenues for Primary students to take on a leadership role are as members of the Student Council or as House Captains and Vice-Captains. Students in the Student Council will help the school promote eco-friendly practices, plan and run student events, such as school dances, dress-up days, and movie nights, and support our local community in a number of ways. Our House Captains and Vice-Captains will promote our house system, tally up the house points and communicate house point totals on a weekly and monthly basis, and lead the chants during our house competitions. We are proud of all of the students who took a risk by writing and performing speeches in order to be elected to these roles. Friday, we recognized our new student leaders at our assembly. Please join us in congratulating the following student leaders for the 2019-2020 school year:

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Secondary Student Leadership During the IBDP Student Retreat, the outgoing Prefects shared their experiences with our Year 12 students. They spoke about time management, organizational skills and leadership. They spoke openly and honestly about giving back to the ACG School Jakarta community, about making an impact on the school and about being positive role models within Secondary. Later in the week, the Year 12 and 13 students voted for their new prefects. The new Prefects will work closely with Alisha Kemp and Adam Putrayando, our Head Girl and Head Boy, to plan and organize events and to represent and support all students. We’re looking forward to the energy and enthusiasm that our new Prefects will bring to ACG School Jakarta.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta The Arts A very warm welcome to the new school year! My name is Richard Todd and I am the IBDP Visual Arts teacher and Arts Team leader this year. I am new to ACG, new to Jakarta and very excited about both! I would like to share a couple of things regarding the Arts team this year, our personnel, our aims and, of course, some images (Y12 works in progress from “I am what I am: the idea of Self”). Our team this year welcomes back Gita Graham who looks after Years 7-11 and Tia Kusmugiarti in Primary. New to ACG this year (apart from myself) is Kaitlin O’Connor, who will be building our Music programme (Whole School) and Mark Ellison, who will be introducing Design Technology to ACG School Jakarta for the first time! The year has got off to a fine start for Music and Visual Arts in many ways; the Picnic saw 16 different acts take to the stage, including students of all age groups playing, singing, dancing and Rubik’s cubing! It was a beautiful day full of smiles, energy and creativity. There will be many more to come throughout the school year as we develop our platforms for student performances. The Sound Room (new music space on the second floor) and Cafeteria stage will be fully operational very soon, and competitions and concerts are soon to be announced, so please watch this space. The Visual Arts team has acquired a new room in Upper Primary and Y7-11 Art and Design has a new home on the 1st floor with Y12 and 13 occupying the 4th floor space. You should start to notice a trend of using quite different signage and ‘environmental graphics’ appearing around school (see images below) from now on as we try to develop our facility in terms of aesthetics and functionality. Again, but literally this time, watch these spaces. All of these areas of development should show an intent; we are working to ensure that ACG School Jakarta students have the tools, spaces and opportunities for learning through creative problem solving, the necessary platforms for expression and at a higher level of quality and frequency than ever before. We want them to feel confident that ACG School Jakarta supports them in their explorations and attempts to create beautiful, useful and well-made solutions to problems that need creative answers! Please contact me on richard.todd@acgedu.com if you have any questions, observations or suggestions, as our ears, eyes and minds are always open.
