WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 15, Term One, Week Three, 14 February 2020 Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland

As the end of Week Three here at Sunderland, I am pleased to report that most students are now in class, engaged with teaching and learning after the controls were put in place regarding the renamed COVID-19 [Coronavirus]. Five of our students are still caught in China, with only a handful confined at home until the fourteen day stand down is met. Otherwise, we are, so very pleased with how the start of the year has progressed.

As I begin my newsletter piece this week, three hundred or so College students got on buses this morning to travel to the Westwave pools, Henderson to compete in our annual swimming sports.

With two new Houses and around fifty more students in the College, the competition will be fierce. Perhaps the most important race of the competition is the Leaders versus the Staff race. This is always a highlight of the day with loud House chanting and enthusiasm from all. I will inform the community of all of the results in next week’s newsletter.

I wish to thank the community with regards our new parking and drop off rules. In general, the systems are working well and parents are respecting the ‘turn

left only’ signs.

My advice to all parents, is to either arrive before 2.45pm or after 3.20pm to minimise delays with the traffic around the school facility. I am also aware that some parents are parking in and around the local community. I do ask that you respect their parking rules and private company policy. Organisation for next week. Week Four

A new initiative has come out of the recent Parents and Friends meeting. Parents and Friends are offering a scholarship to assist an individual or group of current students to participate in an activity where extra finances are required to allow the activity to take place. These activities may include (but are not limited to) representative sports, music, the arts, or sponsorship. The criteria is that the student/s must be currently enrolled at ACG Sunderland and an application Form completed and signed.

Application forms are available at Reception.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Itinerant Music @ Sunderland

ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

Why should students learn an instrument? I could site a lot of research and statistics, or point out the clear link between high academic achievement and people who play instruments… But I’m just going to talk about the reasons I’ve come up with over the years as a Music teacher. 1. It’s fun. Simple as that. 2. It’s a social activity - playing music with others is a great feeling. 3. It’s a skill that you can always improve with - you can always become a better musician and learn. 4. You use rather a lot of your brain to play a piece of music. 5. It’s an emotional outlet. 6. You learn about patience, hard-work and self-discipline.

7. It’s part of our culture. It must be kept alive with new learners. 8. ‘Magic’ is maybe too strong a word - but a lot of what music does is transcendental.

9. It brings a connection to those who really listen to it. 10. It’s logical, systematic and creative.

I could go on… but you get the idea. I hope I have help convince you that learning an instrument might just be really beneficial for your child. At Sunderland we have teachers for voice, drums, guitar, bass, piano, violin, clarinet and saxophone. I hope you feel you would like to give your child a chance to enjoy music in a very personal way. Sean Martin-Bus: clarinet and saxophone (Monday mornings) Lyndell Wilson: piano (Tuesday mornings) Tam Scholes: guitar and bass (Tuesday mornings and (Friday afternoons) Siohbanne Thompson: violin Thursday afternoons) Kylie Todd: voice (Friday mornings) Chris Townsend (Friday midday)

Chess @ Sunderland

ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

Dear fellow Sunderland parents! I am the father of a Year 8 student (Anya) here at ACG Sunderland and a professional Chess Coach. Last year I offered a free Chess Academy for advanced players only, As I had to reject some students, because their level was not high enough to follow what the class was doing, I will this year offer 2 different classes. Advanced Class: • Time: Tuesdays from 3.15pm - 4.15pm we have already had our first lesson with some of last year's students. • Location: T.B.A. (probably L10 or L11) • Class size: depending on the interest, but below 20. • To be accepted students will have to demonstrate a good understanding of Chess and should have successfully played in tournaments already. • Students will need to download the FREE Chessbase Viewer 2017 (https://en.chessbase.com/pages/download) as some additional material will be provided in the form of Chessbase databases. Intermediate Class: • Time Tuesday during lunch break, start date T.B.A. • Location: T.B.A. (probably L11) • Class size: depending on the interest, but below 20. • To be accepted students will have to know the rules of Chess and be comfortable playing against other students. • For this Class a $10 Stationary Fee will apply as all students will be supplied with workbooks. This fee will not be payable via the students accounts as I organize the workbooks myself. If your child(ren) have been at a ChessPower School Holiday Programme they should have these workbooks already, no fee would apply then. Please note that these classes are NOT suitable for Beginners, for these there are classes on Tuesday mornings for Primary students, (your child(ren) will have received a notice already) and College students could go to the student led Chess Club during Thursday's lunch break. Also, please note that the focus of the Academy Classes is on learning. If your child(ren) "just" want to play with their friends the above mentioned other options are the better choice. So if your child(ren) is/are interested, please send an email to sunderland.chess@gmail.com Kind regards Christoph Thurner FIDE Instructor
