ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 15, Term Two, Week Six, 5 June 2020
Dear ACG Sunderland Community I hope you all enjoyed the extra long weekend we all just experienced. It was certainly nice to have some more freedom under level two as well. The Friday before Queen’s Birthday has been Grandparent’s day here at Sunderland and we all are looking forward to 2021 when we can once again celebrate our special day, which then connects to a long weekend. For our Year Five to Year Thirteen students, I am sure they appreciated the weekend to get into study with examinations taking place next week. The results will generate a reference point for our students and staff as we all take stock after the six weeks of lockdown. I wish to also remind everyone that due to the nature of Cambridge assessment, there will be no variations due to Covid-19 pandemic and all Cambridge examinations will assess the entire syllabus taught. The student body are well aware of these expectations too, as well as Mr Stephens and Mr Keen clarifying this with students. A tutorial timetable is being collated for the two week holiday period, this will be available for students and parents before the end of Term.
OPEN DAY – SATURDAY 20 JUNE – 10.30AM TO 2.30PM

In conjunction with our examinations for next week, I include the statement regarding Smartwatches for your information. Our school has rigorous cyber safety practices in place which include use agreements for all school staff and students. The overall goal of the school in this matter is to create and maintain a cyber safety culture which is in keeping with the values of the school, and legislative and professional obligations. It has come to our attention that some children have watches at school that have video and internet capability. These devices are basically a phone on your wrist. Therefore, these watches if brought to school must be switched off at all times and kept in the student’s bag. Students using their device during school hours will have their device removed from them (unless they have prior permission by a teacher). The school’s policy are for educational purposes appropriate to the school environment. This applies whether the ICT equipment is owned by the school or student. Thank you for your support with this. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know. With alert level one on the horizon, it does feel some level of normality is also not far away. Sport teams are being organised as I write this newsletter and practices and even games are taking place this week. I know coaches and managers have spoken to parents and had meetings with team members. If you have not yet confirmed , we do ask that you do speak with coaches about your child's availability. Thank you for your support with out co-curricular programme at Sunderland.
Have a wonderful long weekend.
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Quiet Please! Recording in Progress!!
What to do when you can't perform live to an audience? Well, why not record what you can do and share it that way? ACG Sunderland's Jazz Band and String Theory have been busy recording their repertoire, one person, one person at a time. Here's what a couple of students had to say about the process. Jack Feng - trombone, Jazz Band
“My life of music began with the school jazz band. I was disheartened by the fact that I was not going to be able to enjoy the “swing music” again in my last few months of being here. And I just couldn’t contain my excitement when DOC told me that we will be making music again. In spite of the difficulties and the predictableness of these times, we made it happen, adapted, improvised like we always do. These recordings are not only a record of our success but also the soul and spirit this group and its music Anya Thurner- violin, String Theory
The recording process was lengthy, but it did feel good to be back at school, playing the violin. Recording was quite fun, and I hope that things will go back to normal soon. I'm curious as to what the end result will sound like. We will also be making a video to accompany the recordings. So, watch this space, and look out on YouTube and SoundCloud in the next couple weeks for our students' recording!
