ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 15, Term One, Week Eight, 20 March 2020
Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland These are unprecedented times and there is no script to follow. Every day, processes are evolving and changing, reflecting both national and international practices. Our Prime Minister has released a statement outlining a change retrospectively requiring all people to selfisolate if arriving in New Zealand in the past two weeks. All parents and students are required to respect the change please. A decision was made on Monday that ACG Sunderland will cease having large gatherings, this includes Assemblies, House meetings, and large group meetings. The distribution of all information now goes through the Homeroom Teacher and Form time. The decision was not made lightly, but we believe this practise is in the best interest of our school and students. Many of our sports on offer are now in question. Cricket and Touch have already decided to abandon the rest of the season to reflect current thinking. Winter sports has given themselves time and have deferred decisions for another few weeks. I will keep the community updated with any changes that take place. Unfortunately, we have had to postpone both our Year Five and Year Three camps until later in the academic year. These decisions once again were not easy to make, however all parents were understanding of the situation. To be fair, I think most children were not. The current thinking coming from the Government and the Ministry of Education is that school is a safe place and therefore there are no plans, currently, to close schools. This would be a practise taken much further down the track. However, as I outlined in my email to the community, ACG Sunderland is very well positioned to convert our teaching to a virtual classroom. Trialling is well underway. In fact, Mr Stephens taught his Senior Chemistry classes remotely yesterday.

If, and when, such a decision occurs there will be a requirement that all children have access to their own device. Blackboard will be used for the College and Classdojo for the Primary both of which are easy to navigation. Can I suggest that over the next week or so, that students and parents become confident with all aspects of the software requirements. Zoom will be our video streaming tool with staff currently getting professional development with this product. Below is the link for you to have a look at this product for yourself.
https://zoom.us/ As outlined previously, these are challenging times for us all. Please do not hesitate to speak with any of my staff or myself if you believe that your family or children need extra support. We are all here to assist. This communication was sent out on Wednesday afternoon with regards the current Pandemic crisis as it relates to ACG Sunderland. Prevention Remains a Priority: The Government is still in the "keep it out” and "stamp it out” phase of its Pandemic Plan and the need to prevent the spread of COVID-19 remains a key message from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health. Please note that if your child is unwell, he/she should not attend school. Please continue to reinforce basic hygiene procedures to your child, including: • Washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and drying them thoroughly or using hand sanitizer regularly and especially before eating • Avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands • Avoiding sharing drink bottles • Covering a cough or sneeze with a tissue or elbow • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including getting enough sleep and eating balanced meals As you are aware, in order to assist with maintaining good hygiene at school, we have put hand sanitizer in all Primary classrooms and corridors and shared spaces. We have also increased the cleaning procedures, including additional disinfecting of hard surfaces such as tables, door handles and bannisters. The Ministry of Health continues to be the best source of information about COVID-19 in New Zealand: https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus If you have questions about COVID-19, you can also contact Healthline on 0800 3585453. Planning for Teaching and Learning in the Event of Temporary School Closure: As I outlined in previous communications, if ACG Sunderland is instructed to close, please be assured that our planning and preparation to continue with teaching and learning is well advanced. The school has completed Operational Contingencies Policy and Procedures documents, we are working on a Virtual Learning Environment Guide for parents and students, and we have been developing and testing a range of online platforms and tools. As a member of the Inspired group of schools we have the added benefit of access to international colleagues who are currently delivering online teaching and learning programmes in a number of countries.

Some brief details are as follows: • ACG Sunderland's plan is to continue to operate our regular timetable • Ideally, teachers and students will be online in their virtual classroom in their usual scheduled teaching periods so that interactive teaching and learning continues • The Primary School will predominantly use Classdojo as its Learning Management System, supported with Zoom • The College will deliver much of the material through Blackboard supported with Zoom • Teachers and students will also have access to other existing online learning resources the school currently uses, such as HotMaths, Mathletics, GetEpic and BestChoice • Students will be expected to 'attend' all timetabled classes and be present for the duration of each period. This is a broad overview and we will provide you and your child with further information in due course, and as appropriate. Be assured that the school will only close following the directives and advice from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health and the Inspired Group of Schools. We will continue to strive to fulfil our primary obligations of keeping your child safe and healthy and providing the best education we can now and in the future. I hope that this letter has provided you with useful information regarding what is an evolving and uncertain situation. I will continue to communicate with you as new information on school-related COVID-19 developments and directives are announced. I will also keep you informed of ACG Sunderland's response and any change in our protocols and procedures. I thank you for your ongoing understanding and support of your child and the school as we implement measures in response to COVID-19.
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.
