ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 15, Term Two, Week Eight, 19 June 2020
Dear ACG Sunderland Community We have just concluded the second to last week for term two; I must say how truly proud I am of the entire student body, as the majority of the school reviews and reflects on the recent examination process and results. The results I am being made aware of are pleasing, as most students were able too express their efforts over the lockdown period and have generated some very good grades. There are students, however, who have not produced the grades they are capable of – for a number of reasons. Teaching staff and Deans will be speaking with these students personally, to put strategies in place to improve these current outcomes. These may include: attending the holiday tutorials, peer tutoring, afterschool tutorials, one on one sessions with staff, making use of the Library after school, etc. Most students did incredibly well during the lockdown period, but some did find the process very challenging, losing some momentum along the way. I encourage parents to speak with teaching staff if this is your perception. As expressed earlier, due to the examinations running later this term, reports will be available on Friday 31 July, with Parent/Teacher Interviews taking place on the Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 August. We will be hosting our annual Options Evening, taking place on the Thursday 13 August. This is an opportunity for parents in the College, but Primary parents are also welcome to attend the presentation, covering Option choices, University Entrance and discussions with subject experts too. Senior students do also have opportunity to speak with visiting universities’/polytechnics on Friday afternoons. I understand, due to lockdown, these will continue into Term Three also.

At this time, I also wanted to highlight Sherry Wang – a graduate from last year who has been accepted into Imperial College in London – a wonderful achievement for a superb young woman. Please read the article below: London Calling Receiving an offer from Imperial College London was like hitting the jackpot for ACG Sunderland graduate Yiyang Wang. Later this year the talented 19 year old will jet set her way to England to embark on an MEng Design Engineering – a four year master’s degree which fuses engineering expertise with design thinking. “Imperial College has everything I’ve ever dreamed about in a university, and now I’m going to spend my next four years there,” says Yiyang. “I am so excited to meet students and teachers there and immerse myself in an environment with people who have the same goals and interests. London is an absolutely thrilling city and I can’t wait to explore it.” The highly innovative degree programme produces engineers who are capable of working through the entire process of product development – from inspiration, to design, to production. “It covers a lot of science subjects such as material, mechanics, computing, maths and statistics with more practical modules like design thinking, programming, MATLAB and data analysis to help future engineers open their minds and broaden their thinking.”
With her sights firmly set on an engineering career, it’s the perfect pathway, and one that Yiyang believes ACG Sunderland has prepared her well for. “I couldn’t have achieved this without the indispensable support I received from ACG staff. My design and technology teacher Mrs Faumuina inspired me to take this direction, by making design and technology such an extraordinary subject. She gave up her spare time to tutor us and inspired us with her professional knowledge and skills. So many students in our year group have gone on to study design as a result of her classes.” Campus Deputy Principal Lawrence Stephens was another guiding light. “He is the person I always went to when I was feeling lost, either in chemistry or during the application process. Even though his job is extremely busy, he would always make time to sit down with me to discuss my queries. Although we didn’t always agree on everything, we were both striving for the same thing – my successful application! Mr Stephens has been 120% responsible for where I am now!” In fact, according to Yiyang, Lawrence played a crucial role in ensuring ACG Sunderland was fully registered to offer Cambridge Assessment Admission Testing in time for her admission exam. “Mr Stephens registered our school as an admission exam centre just for me. I had another exam on the same day as my PAT (Physics Aptitude Test). It would have been impossible for me to make the two hour drive to New Zealand’s other registered centre and get back in time for my other exam. Mr Stephens really tried his best to make sure everything worked perfectly, and every time I think of this, I feel so grateful to him.” 2

Yiyang was the first-ever ACG Sunderland student to complete her Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing on campus, giving her easy access to one of the world’s top universities, and the added benefit of sitting her test in familiar surroundings. This year, the school expects up to 10% of Year 13 students to take advantage of one or more of the Cambridge admission exams on offer. Yiyang says this is one of the many reasons she’ll always look back on her time at ACG with such fondness.
“ACG Sunderland is such a friendly and inspiring school. The environment is great, there are plenty of tutorials even during the school holidays, and teachers are available all the time, ready to answer questions. Thanks to this support I was totally motivated to study.” But it wasn’t just time spent in the classroom that has left a lasting legacy. “The school badminton club provides another special memory. It taught me so much more than how to play badminton – it taught me about friendship, teamwork, and mentally preparing yourself to face challenges. One year I was team captain and assistant coach which showed me how to work and think like a leader. These are the invaluable lessons that ACG Sunderland teaches you outside the classroom. “ACG Sunderland has given me much more than an offer to Imperial College - the lessons I learnt there will be with me for life.”
Have a wonderful weekend.
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Music Activities on the Horizon Next term there will be a number of musical activities that students can get involved in. Our String Theory Group will alter slightly to include orchestral woodwinds. So if your child plays flute, clarinet (and a long shot: the bassoon) they are welcome to join the group too. Any other violin, viola or cello students are also welcome to join the Chamber Orchestra. We’ll be focusing on “The Greats” – so composers like Bach, Handel, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. The ACG Sunderland Jazz Band will be welcoming back our vocalist, Sophia Yeoman and we will be learning jazz classics that feature the ladies of Jazz. A new initiative: The Alto Saxophone Group. A number of Year 8 students were very keen to carry on learning the alto sax, which they had an introduction to back in term 1. So I’ll be taking the most promising players and working with them to further develop their skills. I’m hoping they’ll be the future of our extra-curricular jazz programme at Sunderland. They may also work with some of the Rock bands we’ll have going. Battle of the Bands has been relocated to the end of Term 3 and will run concurrently with the Talent Show. I’ve got as many Rock bands as I can handle right now – but the Talent Show will need lots of different types of talent performers: so dancers, solo singers, jugglers, magicians – you name it, if you can do something amazing, then do share your talents with us. The Talent Show/Battle Bands will take place on the last day of Term 3. Here’s a basic schedule for Term 3 Extra-curricular Music practises Tuesdays afterschool – Jazz Band Thursdays afterschool – Chamber Music Group Fridays at lunch – Alto Saxophone Group Any time not already taken after school and at lunch time – Rock Bands! Please do contact me if you’d like your child to get involved in these activities. Always keen to grow our Music here at Sunderland! Email: daniel.o’connor@acgedu.com
