WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term Two, Week Six, 10 June 2022
At Orange Level, ACG Sunderland is working hard to protect our students and staff. All students and staff must wear a face mask in common areas like hallways, the library, reception, decks, Atrium/ Wings Café, and assemblies held in the gymnasium. To protect yourself and the Sunderland community please keep up healthy habits like social distancing where possible, stay home if unwell, hand sanitizing or washing hands, coughing or sneezing into your elbow, keeping doors/ windows open where possible to improve ventilation, and keep up with your vaccinations.

Under 2 Room The Under 2s aren't letting winter stop us from enjoying the outdoors! This week, we explored water play outside and had a great time playing together with sea creatures in warm, soapy water.
Junior Room This week the Junior Room children have been immersing themselves in science experiments with salt, ice, and water, watching how the salt dissolves the ice to form crystal-like structures. They have been enjoying music and movement during their meeting times, making large circle movements up down, slow and fast. We have welcomed a few new children into the Junior Room and they are settling in very well!

Primary Science Week The theme for Primary Science Week this year is Antarctic Science. When one considers the rise in global temperatures, disrupted weather patterns, climate change and the ensuing threat to our polar regions, understanding the science and fragility of our Antarctic has never been more pertinent. During this week, our primary school children conducted a number of activities and were engaged in a series of experiences that will raise their knowledge, awareness, and understanding of our precious Antarctica.

The Lower Primary had a visit from Science in a Van for Science Week. There was lots of laughter and interaction, and the children had a great time.
Primary Sports Cluster Cross Country On Wednesday 1st June, Mr Baker took a small team to the Henderson Primary Sports Cluster Cross Country Event. All the children tried their best and were amazing representatives for ACG Sunderland. For the first time ever, an ACG student won one of the age group races! Georgia Mu won the 8-year-old girls race (pictured below). Congratulations! We also had another top 10 finish, with Blake McKeown coming 4th in the 8-year-old boys.

Auckland Cross Country Championships On Thursday 2nd June, a team of five represented our school in the U14 boys Auckland Cross Country Championships, at Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga. The conditions were not ideal with mud and rain, but this often happens in winter cross country. Almost 100 runners from Auckland schools competed in the race and our team gave 100% to finish eleventh in the three-man-team event. Personally, I enjoyed representing the school in this tough, yet fun event and hope that next year we can get more people to compete from our school, so we can compete in the six-man-team event. Also, thanks to all the staff who helped make this possible for us, and big thanks to Mr Devereux for taking us and looking after us during the event.

"No Planet B" Plastic Pollution Plastic pollution has become one of the most damaging environmental issues. As rapid production of disposable plastic has been increasing, it overwhelms the world’s ability to deal with the plastic. Plastic pollution is most visible in developing Asian and African nations, where rubbish collection systems are often inefficient or non-existent. Countries with low recycling rates have trouble properly collecting discarded plastics. Who owns reusable water bottles? Using reusable items such as water bottles and lunch boxes are good for the environment but are they doing as much as we anticipated? Well, the answer is no. They haven’t made that much of a change in the environment because there are many other forms of disposable plastic that we use in our everyday lives such as food packaging and many more. How can we change that you may be asking? In fact, there are many ways we can reduce pollution but I’ll just list a few of them. First, you can recycle your rubbish more carefully, if you use a car that runs on fuel you could aim to get an electric car in the future, and in the meanwhile use bikes or scooters, you could even walk! All of these things will make a change if everyone contributes, but it will take time for all of the single use plastic to be seriously reduced or even gone. The first piece of plastic was made in 1907 – more than a century ago, however, if we work to use less plastic in our daily lives we will definitely make a huge change in way less than a century.

Cross Country On this past Wednesday, we had Cross Country and the entire school took part. From the primary to the upper college, it was a great time, with encouragement, support and helping the young primary students out. Members of the Sports Council ran with the year ones and twos, amongst many other things to ensure the day would run smoothly. They arrived at 7:00am in the morning to set up and left late, at 4:30, to pack up. All of the gazebos, the course, and the fun interactive activities along the way, were set up by the Sports Council – and I think we owe them, and all of the PE teachers a big thank you. The many house activities were also a huge success. The relay was very exciting to watch, and many people completed multiple laps wearing their brightly coloured house shirts for extra points. The Tug-of-War was yet another house activity, and is always heaps of fun and the highlight of many students’ day. We are unsure at this point which house took out the win; but it looked as though from the relay; Tong was on top. In conclusion, the day was a huge success, and almost everyone participated in one way or another. It is awesome that our school is so focused on having a communal atmosphere at these events, and not just a competitive one for the students who take these sporting days more seriously. In the end, everyone had fun as the weather stayed sunny and dry and there were many smiling and cheering faces in the crowds.
