WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term Two, Week Six, 11 June 2021
Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, Firstly, I just want to thank you all for your support of our annual Grandparents and Special Friends Day held last Friday. This celebration was particularly important as we missed last year’s one due to Covid and lockdowns. This event was our largest ever, with over three hundred people in attendance being wonderfully entertained by our children on stage. One highlight for me was the Preschool singing their Chinese cat song – with members of the audience singing along too. After all of the performances, Grandparents and Special Friends then attended classes, often completing craft activities etc. Morning tea is an important event at Grandparents and Special Friends Day, and this year we had to hose in two venues due to the growth of our school. I do hope everyone enjoyed the event as much as we did hosting it. See you all next year, with fingers crossed, the boarders will be open too!

This year’s Whole School Cross Country was held on Wednesday in perfect running conditions. Cool, with a light breeze and the predicted showers did keep away. The afternoon began with our College House Leaders fronting the warmup with Jump Jam before the first event. The House relay, which has now become an important sub-race, began first. Then the subsequent age-group races took place. with the entire school racing between 0.5km and 3.00km depending on your age group. For some, it is the race they have been waiting for all year. For most, however, it just another component of the ‘Sunderland Way’ and everyone does their ‘piece’ of the House competition. Everyone wears their ‘House’ shirt to gain those extra points. The whole event then concluded with a House Tug of War. The competition was so fierce this year that one of our giant ropes actually snapped!! Thank you to the organisation team, with Mr Baker the College House Leaders and Sports Council all assisting. Special thanks to Mr Keen, well done. Thank you to all the parents who attended and made the day so special. Have a wonderful weekend.
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Grandparents’ Day!!! Friday, last week was Grandparents Day. Hundreds of Grandparents from different households came into the school to support the Sunderland community.
This day is essential to Sunderland because it is dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the important contribution made by grandparents to the well-being and education of children within their family. It is an opportunity for the school to show their gratitude and respect for the older generation, and to honour grandparents. Many Grandparents would also love to see where their grandchildren grow up, and this is the perfect day for them to finally see for themselves. “It is a chance for Grandparents to come and see the environment that the children are in all day.” said Mrs Cosgrove. “Some Grandparents do not get to drop off their Grandchildren every day, so they can come today to see the school”. Additionally, it is an ideal day to meet new people and friends. People of varying ages, from year ones to senior citizens, all come together for one event. “It is a great way to mix the generations”, expressed Lily and Helma. The difference in ages gives people a chance to communicate and learn from people with different amounts of experience. Grandparents are a significant part of a child’s life. In addition to providing childcare, grandparents often also contribute financially to their grandchildren’s well-being. With approximately 30% of grandparents saying they help with money, the financial support of grandparents should not be underestimated either. This day is a good time for grandchildren to reflect on the guidance and wisdom they receive from the older generation, and to show their appreciation. Many children at our school do not grow up with their Grandparents either. This day gives them the opportunity to communicate and socialise with other grandparents. Especially as multiple classes spent the day doing creative arts and activities, allowing the grandparents to mentor the children with. By: Anjika Sharma, Year 11
JADE String Quartet We were very fortunate to have the JADE String Quartet visit and perform at our school. All the players in this group are members of the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra. This was actually their second visit, in the first they worked with our IGCSE Music students with their compositions. Yesterday was about adding finishing touches and performing the students’ works to the school. It made for a varied and interesting short concert. There was also time for a “questions and answers” session about what it’s like to be a professional musician. I’m really grateful to the APO Education outreach for their music mentoring programme. I am also very proud of what our students have been able to accomplish musically.

Parliamentary Internship The Parliamentary Internship was an eye-opening experience for me. I went to Parliament with Minister Phil Twyford who is the MP for Te-Atatu and the only minister who does this Internship which is a great opportunity. This Internship allowed me to shadow the minister with his daily schedule like his meeting and, getting a chance to meet different people like Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson, Minister Radhakrishnan, Vangelis Vitalis (NZ Chief Trade Negotiator) and many more, to watch House live and to be able to explore the Parliament Building.
This experience also made me think and explore different areas of economics which I am interested to study in University and even different opinions which I may not think of. Everyone including Phil Twyford and his team was very welcoming and friendly which is nice for me. I am honoured and very grateful to had the chance to do this Internship and I will never forget this.

ACG Sunderland Students Invoices As I mentioned during January, we moved to a new finance system at the start of the year. The implementation has gone smoothly and we’d like to thank parents who have amended their reference when making payment by bank transfer to the Communication Ref No. A small number of parents have not recognised the noreply-jde@inspirededu.com address that the invoices have been sent from, or have found that the emails have gone direct to junk. If you can please check these points if information is not coming through and, as always, please contact [EMAIL] at [NAME] or [NUMBER] if you have any accounts questions.
