ACG SUNDERLAND WINGS NEWSLETTER

Vol 18, Term Four, Week Five, 11 November 2022

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland,

On Tuesday afternoon, I had the opportunity to attend the matinee performance of the Year 4 6 Production. This was ‘Passport to the World’, where each class chose a country for destination and explored the culture of this country through dance, song and drama.

It was super entertaining, and all the children were clearly enjoying themselves which is what shows are all about.

I wish to also highlight the Primary orchestra, who performed at the short intermissions in the café. This was a fantastic addition to the overall experience.

It is my intention to also attend the Lower College over the next few days. Special thanks to all the teaching staff and in particular Miss Samantha Richardson for her overall direction, and to Mr Daniel O’Connor for all his work with the music and orchestra. This week we had an earthquake drill at school. As you would have expected, the drill went very well.

All visitors and items being dropped off for children – must report to reception – please do not go directly to the classrooms.

On Friday this week, Mrs Chartrand and I will be visiting the Year 4 camp, which is being held at Motu Moana in Green Bay. It has been a number of years since we have been able to conduct outdoor education across the school and I know everyone is very excited.

You will be aware that all our regular camps from Year 6 11 will also be going out from the 21st 23rd November inclusive. I will also be visiting these camps over that time too. At this time, I wish to thank all the staff who give up their own time to take young people out of the classroom into the outdoors. It is a very valuable experience, and a lot of fun. Earlier this year, I let the community know about Liam Hall who was selected to present New Zealand in the Chemistry Olympiad scoring a silver medal. This medal has finally arrived, so we have a photo of our top academic, and a small write up in the college section of this newsletter. Well done, Liam.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Value for next week is:

Authenticity

The quality of being genuine or real.

Early Learning School

Under 2’s Room

This week, the Under 2s drew on coloured paper to see how colours mix to make magic results.

Junior Room

For this week, our Junior children had the chance to experience and learn using exploration. They are busy participating in creating volcanoes, magic milk and making their own potions in support of the learning inquiry for this term, Transformation. Everyone seemed to love this experiment and enjoyed watching the different changes happen.

The Junior children are demonstrating the maori disposition of being whakarongo (focused) as they are spending a long time concentrating on their mahi (work). They were able to continue with their work while others are chatting around them and they are contributing to the conversation with smile and gestures as they work without getting distracted.

Early Learning School

Senior Room

Early Learning School tamariki have had so much fun exploring areas of indoor play when we couldn’t be outside, such as family play, drawing, sandpit, counting numbers, drawing shapes, target game, college, puzzles and quiet activities like reading. It was another exciting week learning with our Early Learning School children. We are still doing our Jolly Phonics program, to teach children how to identify different letter sounds (of the alphabet) so they can read and eventually write them.

Junior Worlds Karate Championships

Eesha Ranchhod – Year 11 competed in the Junior Worlds Karate Championships on the 26th of October, representing New Zealand. She managed to place 29th, putting her in the top 30 in the world in her age group, Junior Kata Female. Congratulations, Eesha!

Chemistry Olympiad

Earlier this year, I participated in the International Chemistry Olympiad, which was held remotely in Tianjin, China. I was the first student from our school to ever make it to the New Zealand team. I was ecstatic with my result, where I was in the top 30% of over 300 of the top chemistry students from all around the world. This scored me the highest result from the NZ team.

Since we couldn't attend in person, the medal had to be shipped all the way back here for us to receive it. Last week, I finally managed to pick this up from one of the NZ Coordinators. Not only did I receive my silver medal, I also was given some memorabilia, which included a backpack, mascot and an official reward scroll. These are memories that I will treasure forever.

Parents and Friends Committee

Dear Parents and Friends of ACG Sunderland

ACG Sunderland is an independent school whose students are of incredibly diverse ethnicity. From pre school to senior college the school strives to help their students achieve their full potential. The Parents and Friends Committee works alongside this aim of the school.

Parents and Friends is a committee run by volunteers all, unsurprisingly, are friends or families of the school! The committee raises funds to cover items of benefit to the students that are not covered by school fees. In the past this has included such things as donations to the school ball, shade sails over playgrounds, cricket nets, and the planting of a hedge for privacy at the front of the primary playground.

All activities run by Parents and Friends are fun, social activities that help to instil a feeling of belonging throughout all families attending the school. Meetings take place on the first Thursday of every month at 8.30am in the staffroom. Please let Mrs Sonya Eldridge know if you are interested in joining the committee by email: sonya.eldridge@acgedu.com

The next meeting is Thursday 1 December 2022.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland

Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S).

What is our Mission statement?

To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community.

To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination.

How to get involved or get your badge?

We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service.

Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate.

Below is the information for the badges:
