ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term Four, Week Five, 12 November 2021
Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland Many of you will have watched the Minister of Education on Wednesday afternoon outline a strategy to enable schools to reopen safely, following all the Health Order protocols. You will have also read ACG Sunderland’s response to this information. We will be reopening the school once our current Senior Cambridge Examinations have taken place. Therefore, ACG Sunderland will reopen on the 22 November to all students Year 8-10. These students will have full face-to-face teaching. At the same time, we will be surveying parents over the next two days to determine the demand from parents to have their children come back to school from Years 0-7. All staff will be returning to school to either deliver face-to-face or by Zoom. At this stage, staff will be the ones moving from class to class and not the children. as we manage the Health Order expectations. I will distribute all our protocols early next week to give parents adequate time to understand our processes.

We appreciate this is an unsettling time, as the Auckland and the Waikato move out of the strict lockdown rules that we have all been following over the past 12 weeks. I also understand that some parents are going to be quite reluctant to have their children leaving the safety of home. I can reassure you that our team, who have managed the examination process over the past 6 weeks, have done so faultlessly with staff and student safety being always of paramount concern. The bottom line is that we are experienced at managing the perceived risks. My daughter has been one of those students sitting examinations, and as a parent, I am so very pleased with the process. I will be in touch early next week. Have a wonderful weekend everyone. Kindest Regards
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.
Nathan Villars Campus Principal ACG Sunderland
Value for the next week is: Kindness The quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.

Preschool Online Learning It is another exciting week of learning with our Preschool children. We started our Jolly phonics program this week to teach children how to identify different letter sounds (of the alphabet) so they can read and eventually write them. We introduced these letters ‘s, a, t’ and to reinforce their sounds, the children were encouraging their creative ideas in making art and crafts and explored other activities, which involved making silly soups and sandcastles in the sandpit.
Some of our families and staff members are celebrating the Diwali festival this week, that gave us an opportunity to participate in activities and learn about other people’s culture. The children enjoyed making diya, used different colours for their rangoli and henna when decorating some cultural designs on paper. We finally have the sunshine today which allowed us to have our picnic lunch outdoors.

Century Secret (Shortened Version) “1997, 87, 77, 67, 57…” my mate Derek Wood mumbled, he was scanning through a tome he found in a locked cabinet while we were dusting the basement. I had never seen him read a book in my lifetime, and was surprise he was actually engaged with the content. “Finally, all done and dusted!” I said with relief. I saw my mate still in the corner, locking eyes with one page – I went to check it out. “You’re such a slow reader, why are you still on page 1?” I questioned him. He didn’t respond, in fact, he didn’t move at all: still as statue, it seemed like his soul had left the lad’s body. Without a second thought, I snatched the tome off him. Page 1 read: “A magical surprise awaits you; mumble the following characters written at the bottom of this page to activate!” I scanned my eyes down the page; seeing the numbers 1997, 87, 77, 67, 57 written in Indian ink. I could identify that this was handwritten and signed by ‘Jonathan Swift’. Wasn’t this what my mate was mumbling before? I wanted to take the risk, so I followed the instructions… “Góde ofernón my good sir, would yer’ like to enter?” alarmed a knight. I was napping under an apple tree, infront of a colossal castle. I could see from my position that the Irish flag was flying madly in the air. “Uhm, is my bro anywhere here?” I asked the knight. “Bro? To exert oneself!” he responded. This guy is mad dumb, he is using some old English to try confuse me. “Sir, you have invaded the property, Commander would like to request a word with you!” claimed the other knight. I was bewildered, how did I get here? Where is my bro? Is this all a dream? Both knights held me up and dragged me to the entrance of the castle. “It has come to my knowledge that peasants have been dozing under my beloved apple tree. I have no other choice than to terminate you!” exclaimed the masked Commander. “Shut up man, don’t you dare call me a peasant. Educate your knights how to use slang,” I argued. The Commander looked extremely puzzled. He questioned “Slang!?” OAP’s these days are so complicated to get along with. The knights threw me in a prison cell, located 20 metre above ground. Gave me a brush, ink pot and a piece of note. On the note it read: “Servant of Commander, DEREK WOOD, SLANE CASTLE 1725…!” I froze in silence…

ACG Sunderland Students Invoices As mentioned in January, we moved to a new finance system at the start of the year. The implementation has gone smoothly and we’d like to thank parents who have amended their reference when making payment by bank transfer to the Communication Ref No. A small number of parents have not recognised the noreply-jde@inspirededu.com address that the invoices have been sent from, or have found that the emails have gone direct to junk. If you can please check these points if information is not coming through and, as always, please contact Mandy Allen at mandy.allen@acgedu.com or 09 838 7070 if you have any accounts questions.
No Cheque payments from 22 June 2021 ACG Sunderland will not be accepting or issuing cheques from Tuesday 22 June 2021. Payments need to be made online or over the counter with Eftpos or Credit Cards (2% surcharge). Please note that both the café and reception cannot provide any cash-out services.

UBIQ has taken the decision to not proceed with second-hand buyback purchasing for the 2022 academic year. This is not a decision they have taken lightly as they feel it is a valuable service to provide to the students, and families attending ACG. However, in light of recent and ongoing outbreaks of the highly transmissible Delta variant of Covid-19 in the community and subsequent alert level changes, they strongly feel the need for ongoing caution and care. Even more so given the size of the campus we are based on, and recent cases that created exposure events on campus. For this reason, UBIQ are uncomfortable putting their staff, ACG students and their families in a position of risk. UBIQ sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this will cause and look forward to a safer 2022.
