ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term Three, Week Three, 13 August 2021
Dear Parents & Friends of Sunderland On Tuesday night, I had the privilege of seeing both our Senior Netball Teams in their finals of their respective grades. Both teams had their best games of the season, with the Senior A Team beating their Avondale opposition quite comfortably in comparison to the draw generated earlier in the season. The Senior B Team were leading their opposition at ¾ time, but unfortunately Stella Dobson suffered a nasty thumb injury and the team battled on with only six players, coming up just short in the end. I wish to congratulate all the players for their wonderful season and to personally thank Mr Stephens and Mr Keen for their skill and energy in coaching their respective teams. Things look very positive for next season!

Our Primary School trips to Mangere Mountain continued this week, with trips for our Senior Primary Students. The feedback has been so very positive and I wish to thank Mrs Riddell for organising this science based experiences.
On Thursday night, Mr Stephens and I hosted our annual Careers/Options Evening in the Auditorium. This was our largest ever with perhaps 200 people in attendance. Three main topics were covered: How Cambridge works University Entrance The Options Process here at Sunderland These were followed by an opportunity to speak with subject specialists here at Sunderland to gain a better understanding of each subject and where it may lead beyond school. If for any reason you missed the evening, please don’t hesitate to contact myself, Mr Stephens or Mrs Lambarth, who is our Careers Advisor. Have a wonderful weekend everyone.
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

The Evolution of the Chess Club I think all of us can agree that 2020 was a strange year for everyone. For us students, lockdown and alert levels changed our day to day lives including our schoolwork, social lives and extracurricular activities. The extracurricular activity that changed most for me was chess and the drastic change from playing in my club to online chess. Pre-Covid, I played many tournaments around Auckland, NZ and even in other countries, but with Coronavirus this was obviously harder to do. Thankfully, over the board chess isn’t the only option for us chess players, as we also have a world of online chess to explore. I never really played online chess before 2020 but quarantine changed all of that. My first real experience with online international tournaments was the 2020 FIDE Chess Online Olympiad. Living in New Zealand, our time zones weren’t ideal. The tournament organizers had the tournaments schedules accustomed to the countries where most of the chess players were from which meant that games here could go from 9pm-2am while others were playing from 3pm-8pm. They also had to take measures to make sure that we couldn’t cheat. The main precaution they took was our old friend Zoom. We were to join a zoom meeting where we would turn on our camera and microphone and share our screens so that the organizers could always see what was going on around us. Another problem that we bumped into was the language barrier but there were ways to get around that with interpreters and finding a common language. I also started playing more online chess using popular chess websites such as Lichess and Chess.com in my spare time, a quick and easy way to keep me entertained. Now that vaccines are starting, I hope that we will begin to return to travelling to play chess, but online chess will always be engraved in my brain as a massive part of my growth as a chess player. ACG Sunderland Students Invoices As mentioned in January, we moved to a new finance system at the start of the year. The implementation has gone smoothly and we’d like to thank parents who have amended their reference when making payment by bank transfer to the Communication Ref No. A small number of parents have not recognised the noreply-jde@inspirededu.com address that the invoices have been sent from, or have found that the emails have gone direct to junk. If you can please check these points if information is not coming through and, as always, please contact Mandy Allen at mandy.allen@acgedu.com or 09 838 7070 if you have any accounts questions.
No Cheque payments from 22 June 2021 ACG Sunderland will not be accepting or issuing cheques from Tuesday 22 June 2021. Payments need to be made online or over the counter with Eftpos or Credit Cards (2% surcharge). Please note that both the café and reception cannot provide any cash-out services.
