WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term Two, Week Two, 14 May 2021
Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland It is already the conclusion of week two of Term Two, and the students have settled very well into their studies, as the Upper Primary through to the Upper College prepare for their internal examinations, which begin next week. The library numbers have swollen in the afternoons, as students make use of any extra time to complete their examination preparations. As a school, we wish all students the very best for next week – remembering there is no luck involved, its preparation and hard work that will pay off. I also remind parents that the most crucial learning time for any student is that period just after an assessment has taken place, when both the teacher and student are so very informed of strengths and weaknesses in the students learning. Thus, the teacher can build the learning specifically for that student’s requirements moving forward. An opportunity has arisen in the Findlay student Leadership team and we have been able to appoint Jasmine Capper as House Leader. We congratulate her as a school, and are confident she will contribute greatly to her House and the school. On Wednesday night, I did send a reminder to all parents about the expectations of the wearing of our sports uniform. Please can you support our expectations at our games and fixtures in the near future.

A copy of my letter is below for your reference. I’m so pleased that after the second week of the Winter sports competition, our teams are all doing so very well. I have had the pleasure to see many of our teams playing netball and basketball already. I do wish to remind all teams that the compulsory tracksuit is the only waterproof garment that can be warn plus the optional Sunderland hoodie too. No other garments can be used for sports events. I am also aware that our uniform provider is manufacturing a size 4 tracksuit top currently. The items can be purchased from the uniform shop on Patiki Road, online or at our second-hand uniform shop. SHOP ONLINE: https://lenco.space/schoolwear/school-wear-acg-sunderland/
The Primary swimming programme has started very well. Thank you to Mr Sam Baker for all his organisation and support with this important learning opportunity. These lessons lead to our annual Primary Swimming Carnival to be held on Wednesday 23 June. As a reminder, our annual cross-country event will take place on Wednesday 9 June.
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

STUDENTS VOICE
ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland
A2 English Language Learn about Language Learning This year our A level English Language class has been learning about Child Language Acquisition (CLA). This topic refers to the processes that a child must move through in order to gain knowledge for appropriate use of language. Language development has been categorised into five different stages; babbling, holophrastic, two-word, telegraphic and finally, post telegraphic. To further develop our learning we were given multiple opportunities to visit the preschool and year one class to see and analyse their language acquisition and stages of development.
For our first mini class trip we headed on down to the preschool where we were given the opportunity to observe the class in action. Once we arrived we joined in on “mat time” where the students sang multiple songs which were upbeat and full of giggles. After the songs, the preschoolers were split up into different groups where each group focused on different activities. The tables did a variety of exercises catering to the needs of the different students. Some tables were outside drawing while others were inside watching videos and learning the alphabet and counting. From observing the teachers, we could see them utilising child directed speech (CDS) as they spoke with higher intonations, exaggerated their speech and used their hands excessively when talking. CDS is used to keep the children engaged and following the conversation. After the preschool visit, we identified and applied the relevant theorists and discussed how both the teachers and students used them.
Our class was given another opportunity to study CLA and visit the year one class. Throughout this visit they: performed a play about Goldilocks and the Three Bears; wrote and read stories for us; and involved us in their group play session. This visit allowed us to observe how children at this age interact with each other, as well as how the children interact with the teacher, and vice versa.
The first week of term two we were asked to visit the same year one class again, this time to teach the children all about long and short vowels. Before the lesson, we created a lesson plan with all kinds of different techniques and tools to allow the year one’s to learn in ways that helped them remember the information. These techniques and tools took inspiration and concepts from the child language theories we studied in class and took into consideration the different aspects of children learning language. We used videos and picture cards to cater to visual and oral learners and provided them with activities to do physically for kinaesthetic learners. These techniques and tools worked to help them learn and remember what we taught them, as we noticed when we asked them to repeat what we taught back to us, they remembered the specific examples we gave them.
This hands-on experience was vital in helping us clearly understand the key concepts and theories we learnt throughout this unit and we can now implement these visits into our examination answers. We now have the ability to apply practical and reallife experience to the content we learnt in class. Our class really enjoyed being involved in the physical aspect of the child language acquisition topic and seeing the different things we learned about happen in front of our eyes.

ACG Sunderland Students Invoices As I mentioned during January, we moved to a new finance system at the start of the year. The implementation has gone smoothly and we’d like to thank parents who have amended their reference when making payment by bank transfer to the Communication Reference Number. A small number of parents have not recognised the noreply-jde@inspirededu.com address that the invoices have been sent from, or have found that the emails have gone direct to junk. If you can please check these points if information is not coming through and, as always, please contact [EMAIL] at [NAME] or [NUMBER] if you have any accounts questions.
