ACG SUNDERLAND WINGS NEWSLETTER

Vol 18, Term Four, Week One, 14 October 2022

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland,

Welcome back to Term Four, and a huge welcome to the twelve new students that started at ACG Sunderland this term too.

We welcomed these students at the Primary and College assemblies where they received their certificates and badges for their blazer.

I’m sure all our new students will enjoy the Sunderland experience.

Spring is here with flowers blooming and lawns growing like they are on steroids. Term Four also means Summer Uniforms for both the Primary and College. I have taken a couple of photos, so all parents are aware of what unform is expected this time of the year.

This can all be purchased at Freedom2Play – previously called Lenco.

Term Four also means examinations, with the Cambridge Exams having already begun during the holidays.

As I began this newsletter, our Checkpoint Examinations in both the Primary (Year 6) and College (Year 9) have just begun.

Unfortunately, we were unable to run this set of examinations last year, due to Covid Therefore, it’s wonderful these young students are being exposed to an international assessment.

If you are coming into school, please be respectful of the instructions and potential room changes that are taking place to accommodate the exams.

Over the break our primary Chess team took part in the national Competition held in Christchurch this year. Our junior team did very well, securing 5th place overall.

On Monday morning , we recognized the teams wonderful result with each of them receiving a Principals Badge.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Summer is coming. We would like to put our hats on and bask in the sunshine.

Junior Room

For Term 4, our junior room here at ACG Sunderland Early Learning School is focusing on physical development. The huge part of our programmes for junior room is centered around the child’s physical development and growth, including gross and fine motor skills. A way in which we ensure children are developing skills essential for their gross development is through interactive, well planned group times which focus on this learning and development.

Through physical development the children are gaining control and knowledge of their bodies and what their capabilities are. They gain the confidence and self esteem which will support them in other areas of their learning, including social competency. As children become aware of their bodies, they begin to learn how to control their bodies which encourages the concentration needed for mat time learning and interactions.

Kia Ora e te whanau,

The weather has been great this week, which encouraged the Senior room tamariki to enjoy the outdoor area in planting seeds for our garden, exploring water play and other activities that interest them.

The letter sound of the week is ‘B’, and the children love all the creative activities that involved beading, painting , and drawing pictures of objects and animals which start with this letter sound. Sia, who started this week, and her whanau were welcomed into our Senior room.

After months of training and study, Laud Carr Year 9 passed the New Zealand Surf Life Savings Bronze Award and is now a qualified Surf Lifeguard. The award consisted of a timed 400 meter swim, tows with a surf tube (rescue floatation device), written 90 minute exam covering everything from risk management to signals, water conditions and patrol administration, a practical first aid examination including CPR, radio communications and to finish off a run swim run at Piha with a tube rescue (where the water was very cold on Sunday).

Laud will be a volunteer surf lifeguard at Bethells Beach when the season starts on Labour weekend, and you may even see him in the IRB rescue boats as a crew person when the surf gets too big for swim rescues.

Congratulations Laud

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland

Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S).

What is our Mission statement?

To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community.

To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination.

How to get involved or get your badge?

We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service.

Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate.

Below is the information for the badges:
