ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term Four, Week One, 15 October 2021

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, It’s a wonderful spring day, a cool morning, the wind is up a little but not a cloud in the sky. Usually, there would be the sound of children everywhere, running outside, the chat of senior students in Wings Café and staff moving through the corridors. However, this is Lockdown Level 3, and currently schools continue to be closed across Auckland, Northland and the Waikato. One of the positives is that Cambridge Schools have the opportunity to continue to offer their external examinations onsite at school to our senior students. We are aware that students have worked all year, and It is wonderful for them to then have the chance to perform at their best in a high-stake assessment, with these exams being confirmed to take place from the 7th of October. ACG Sunderland is following the Health Order very closely to minimise the risks to our staff and students during this very challenging time, but to date I have been very impressed with how the process for all parties has been taking place.

VIRTUAL OPEN DAY – 30 OCTOBER 2021 10.30am – 2.30pm

ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

Next week is more challenging as our numbers increase, particularly on Monday and Tuesday. I have full confidence in our processes and in our staff, led by Mr Stephens, in navigating this time. If any of you have questions about this process, please don’t hesitate to make contact. Many of you will be aware that the Government is now requesting schools to collect data on the vaccination status of all students from 12 years old. For Sunderland, that will mean students in Year 8 and above in practice. We will let you know how we will survey your children in the next week or so. The online school lessons appear to be going very well and I want to commend our teachers and students for again seamlessly moving into this mode of teaching straight after the holidays. We have had seven new students join the school this term also – mainly in the Primary and one in the College. A huge welcome to these new students. Mr Dawson was telling me that Siyona Biswas had been successful in having some T Shirt designs accepted commercially. A huge congratulations to her. Please stay safe everyone and I look forward to catching up face to face (in a mask) very soon.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Preschool

Preschool Online Learning During the first week of the school holidays, the preschool tried doing some science experiments.

Dancing Rice experiment Baking soda and vinegar reactions are a mainstay of many cool science experiments, but did you know they can even make rice dance? What you’ll need: white vinegar, baking soda, rice, clear jar, water, food colouring (optional) Instructions: Fill the jar 3/4 full with water. Add food coloring if desired. Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda and stir. Mix completely. Add 1/4 cup of uncooked rice. Add 1-2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Watch the rice dance!

The reaction didn’t happen at first, I had to add in a little more vinegar than I had initially expected. When we did, though, it was awesome. The top fizzed slightly but then the rice just started dancing around the jar. It was fantastic. I am glad we added in food coloring. It made the effect of the dancing rice experiment look even more cool. It almost looked like a black light show or some sort of light show. This experiment truly was fun.

Preschool Online Learning Lava Lamp Experiment: What you’ll need: glass or plastic bottle, water, vegetable oil, baking soda, 1 cup vinegar, food colouring, eye dropper, funnel Instructions: Put 2 or 3 heaped tablespoons of baking powder (bicarbonate of soda) into a tall jar. Fill approximately one-quarter with cold water. Add a drop of food colouring and give the mixture a swirl. Don't worry if the baking powder doesn't all dissolve. Carefully pour in cooking oil until the jar is about three-quarters full. Pour in about a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice. What happens? For an authentic lava lamp experience, do this experiment in a darkened room and put a bright torch behind the jar. Watch the shadows it casts, trippy man! The science behind this experiment: Oil and vinegar do not mix. When you drop vinegar into the bottle with the oil, the vinegar sinks to the bottom and the oil floats to the top. Oil floats on the surface because vinegar is heavier than oil. Vinegar is more dense than the oil. As the drops of vinegar fall through the oil to the bottom of the bottle, it reacts with the baking soda to make carbon dioxide gas. These bubbles attach themselves to the coloured vinegar and cause them to float to the surface. When the bubbles pop, the colour sinks back to the bottom of the bottle.

Preschool Online Learning We’ve been incorporating a lot of open-ended explorations into our preschool activities. These sink or float activities are an engaging way for kids to explore the properties of different materials. They are great science investigations for preschoolers. Today in our zoom meeting we tried Floating and sinking experiment and children really liked it. This science experiment is the perfect way to explain density to pre-schoolers. It took them a while to discover that some objects floated and some sank depending on their density. I explained that objects that are less dense than water will float, while objects that are more dense than water will sink Children learned: Whether something floats depends on the material it is made of, not its weight. Objects float if they are light for their size and sink if they are heavy for their size. An object can be light for its size if it contains air, such as a hollow ball. Materials with a boat shape will float because they effectively contain air.

Colouring Competition – NZ Cancer Society Kia Ora, This term, ACG Sunderland is supporting the 'NZ Cancer Society' for our Term 3 charity. The Cancer Society of New Zealand is currently the leading non-government organisation dedicated to reducing the incidence and impact of cancer and ensuring cancer care for everyone in New Zealand. It is an independent charity. With recent Lockdowns, our fundraising events at school has been a challenge. Nonetheless, we have put in place a Colouring Competition for the students to do during the lockdown period. Students received an email from their House Leaders with a PDF File of the Colouring Sheet. Once we are back in school, they can submit their sheet at Reception with a simple gold coin donation. With this year's Street Appeal for Daffodil Day cancelled, donating through our school is the perfect opportunity for you to show your support! You may also directly donate to the NZ Cancer Society via this link below: https://www.daffodilday.org.nz/acgsunderland Thank you so much for your help, Stay Safe! An Auckland University Creative Arts and Industries student led Urban Planning Workshop was held last week via Zoom. The students were led through a problem solving task and Kate Ricketts who is the new Student Academic Advisor for the Faculty of Creative Arts & Industries was impressed by the responses of the ACG Sunderland senior students. It was a really wonderful opportunity for them to hear about University culture and to engage in some fun and exciting activities

The implementation has gone smoothly and we’d like to thank parents who have amended their reference when making payment by bank transfer to the Communication Ref No. A small number of parents have not recognised the noreply-jde@inspirededu.com address that the invoices have been sent from, or have found that the emails have gone direct to junk. If you can please check these points if information is not coming through and, as always, please contact Mandy Allen at mandy.allen@acgedu.com or 09 838 7070 if you have any accounts questions.

No Cheque payments from 22 June 2021 ACG Sunderland will not be accepting or issuing cheques from Tuesday 22 June 2021. UBIQ has taken the decision to not proceed with second-hand buyback purchasing for the 2022 academic year. This is not a decision they have taken lightly as they feel it is a valuable service to provide to the students, and families attending ACG. However, in light of recent and ongoing outbreaks of the highly transmissible Delta variant of Covid-19 in the community and subsequent alert level changes, they strongly feel the need for ongoing caution and care. Even more so given the size of the campus we are based on, and recent cases that created exposure events on campus. For this reason, UBIQ are uncomfortable putting their staff, ACG students and their families in a position of risk. UBIQ sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this will cause and look forward to a safer 2022.
