ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland

Vol 16, Term Four, Week One, 16 October 2020

Welcome back to school for the final term of this very strange 2020. I hope, like me, you were able to at least have a couple of days away with your families. However, I am cognizant that Years Six, Nine and the Seniors did have high-stake Cambridge Examinations beginning this week, so it really was not a holiday for most. Our Lower College students also have internal examinations beginning after Labour weekend. I wish to also acknowledge the time staff gave up over the recent holidays to offer tutorials for most subject areas. I know the attendance of these seminars was almost at 100% which is again, quite remarkable. Many of you will have read the articles that have been published in the Herald over the past number of weeks highlighting the concern the New Zealand Institute has over New Zealand’s decline in the PISA results. (These are tests run in all OECD countries with 15-year-old children in Math's, English and Science). This has occurred at the same time most New Zealand schools have moved to a very skills based, student centred learning strategy. I can assure you that ACG Schools offer a knowledge contentbased teaching approach and that if the data for private schools is assessed independently,

then New Zealand private schools rate in the top three according to OECD evidence. Our approach to the two lockdown periods in New Zealand also mirrors this strategy with our students having Zoom lessons for all their contacts. Teachers were still engaged with delivery and feedback thus, our Senior students move into the high stake Cambridge Examinations, confident and well prepared. The Chess Championships On the 26th and 27th of September a group of students from ACG Sunderland went to Tauranga to compete in the New Zealand Chess Federation’s NZ Interschool National Championships. The group of students competing in the intermediate division were Yolanda Chang (year 8), Eric Mironov (year 8), Sophia Feng (year 5) and myself. This tournament was an excellent opportunity to practise and use our chess skills and knowledge. There were 16 schools competing in total, and the major opponents were Somerville School, Auckland Normal Intermediate, Takapuna Normal Intermediate, ACG Parnell, North Cross Intermediate and Blockhouse Bay. The tournament was split across two days, the first five rounds on the first day and the critical last two rounds on the second day, with prizegiving scheduled at midday, giving competitors a good amount of time to travel back home. On the first day our team won against Newlands Intermediate (Wellington) and Pinehurst (North Shore), drew against ACG Parnell (Central Auckland) and lost to Takapuna Normal Intermediate (North Shore). On the second day the team won against Mount Roskill Intermediate and Auckland Normal Intermediate, bumping them down to second place. In the end ACG Sunderland came fourth with nine points, narrowly being beaten by Auckland Normal Intermediate and ACG Parnell, both having 10 and Takapuna Normal Intermediate coming first with 12 points. Congratulations to the chess team and may they have good luck in tournaments to come!

Talent Show & Battle of the Bands Congratulations to all the winners and to those who took time for practices and endless recordings. All performances of this year’s Talent Show and Battle of the Bands were phenomenal. Everyone loved the amazing singers, the beautiful violin players, talented dancers and the wonderful pianists. Everything was so spectacular. Due to Covid-19, the Talent Show and the Battle of the Bands was pre-recorded. However, the energy was vocal. Everyone in the room was whooping and cheering on these brave souls. We all had a blast singing along to the graduates’ lovely singing of “See You Again”. Some students were swaying at the back of the room with torches creating a beautiful loving mood for the seniors last day. All in all, it was a beautiful way of saying goodbye to the seniors. There was also a bonus of the teachers’ band of Mr O’Conner with his beautiful voice, Mr Dawson with his fantastic guitar skills, and Ms Ngoh with her amazing drumming skills. It was a fun moment to watch and cheer on these amazing teachers and all the other participants of the 2020 Talent Show & Battle of the Bands.

Senior Music Concert On the last Wednesday of Term Three, we had our annual Senior Music concert, in which the Jazz Band, the Chamber Orchestra, and our IGCSE students took part. Within the audience, we had many parents of our performers watching, which was great to see. For the IGCSE students, the performance contributed to their overall grade for the year, so it was understandably very important for them. The Jazz Band opened our concert performing “Have you met Miss Jones”, and “Like Someone in Love”, with Sophia Yeoman from Year Nine singing. As expected, they did a remarkable job, which I’m sure they should be proud of. At the same time, this was also quite saddening, as it was the last time that they performed together, considering that some players from the Jazz Band will be graduating this year.

Following them, we had the IGCSE students perform, which was very inspiring as they are clearly very talented at what they do. These were also recorded for marking, which is something they can look forward to. Afterwards, the Chamber Orchestra, performed, visibly grown from when they first began. They performed “March in G”, “Rondo e capriccio”, “Hungarian dance”, and “Hornpipe”. Despite none of us being a Senior, apart from our pianist, who is our IGCSE student, the Orchestra performed really well, which was a great experience for the group. The IGCSE Music Class Band performed to close the concert. It was thrilling to watch. We can all agree that their teamwork was impeccable, and it was very much enjoyed by all of us. The concert was very amusing and fun, so we anticipate participating again next year.

Starship Charity!

ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

Last term our leadership team chose Starship Hospital as their nominated charity. It was a resounding success with $2,281.70 being raised. This is a truly amazing effort from the entire school. With Lower Primary constantly donating gold coins to compete in the colouring competition our leaders had a challenging time choosing the winners. This led to the Leaders having to announce two winners: Georgia Mu in 3SB and Ryan Kueh from 4LC. Thank you primary for all your wonderful works of art! The Leadership Team would like to extend a heartfelt thankyou to all students & families of ACG Sunderland for your amazing support of this term’s charity: Starship. This term we held a Movie Night, a Primary colouring competition, a space-themed mufti day and the school’s very first virtual Talent Show/Battle of the Bands. We have had wonderful participation and entries in all of these events. We have managed to raise a great donation for this most-worthy charity.

Thank you all so much!
