ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term One, Week Twelve, 16 April 2021 Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland We have finally got here, to the end of the first term, through twelve teaching weeks, two lockdowns and an Easter break, too. The children are tired but in good spirits, and I know they are going to enjoy the break. I am so pleased that the weather was respectful of our Athletics Day this week, which had to be transferred from February. It really was a wonderful day, with our best ever participation and attendance levels. The competition was excellent too – with lots of personal bests and some records broken.

Again, we managed to have a full Primary and College competition taking place simultaneously, with our Year One and Year Two children starting just a fraction early to complete their events before the heat of the day. I wish to thank all the staff, who go beyond what is generally required to make this event the success it always is. The College Leaders and Sports Council are also fully committed behind the scenes, both before and after school to assist with the set-up and pack-down. And lastly, a huge thank you to Mr Baker from the Primary and Mr Keen for the College for their overall leadership and direction of the event. Well done to everyone involved! On Thursday, of this week the College Leaders had organised the ‘Kauri Clean Up’, where around forty students gave up their time after school to clean up of the kauri grove, plus a tidy-up the Steve Demanule Garden. Both of these spaces at the back of our school have important significance for the students and staff.

WINTER UNIFORM IS WORN IN TERM TWO

ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

Mr Steve Demanule passed away seven years ago – quite suddenly, during a holiday break. He was a great English Teacher, a mentor and friend to many. His passing meant a great deal to many. Students donated funds to develop a memorial garden, which has literally blossomed since its inception. Therefore, a respectful tidy up of this space did take place. We also planed a grove of kauri trees very close by, to symbolise the loss of Kauri in the Waitakere Ranges. The Mufti day today is focused around raising both awareness of kauri die-back and funds towards charities involved in combating the disease. Have a wonderful Autumn break, remembering that examinations take place in week three of next term. Enjoy the Ball this Saturday night.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

They visited all the rooms in the museum without the public there and had a biscuit and hot chocolate before crawling into their sleeping bag under the travelator (under the sharks swimming all night)! They all had a blast!

Final Destination: Chapter 2 Last time: While on a flight, the plane is hijacked by an unknown person. Passengers start to panic while our protagonist decides to investigate. However, he is met with some consequences he didn’t ask for... As much as I would have loved to, I couldn’t turn away from the knowledge of what this person was capable of. All I wanted was a relaxing holiday. Was that too much to ask? Nevertheless, I owed it to everyone on this plane to get them home safely. Especially after last time. I opened the cockpit door slowly so the murderer couldn’t hear me. Closing the door behind me, I surveyed my surroundings. The hijacker was focused on flying the plane and showed no indication of hearing me. There was no co-pilot in sight. Whether or not there was a co-pilot to begin with is a whole different question. Captain Davidson’s limp body slumped against the side of the cockpit. I treaded softly towards him. A bleeding bruise with blue edges on the side of his head indicated he had taken a nasty hit. Then I looked at his chest; there was a gunshot wound. Even though I knew it was hopeless, I checked for his pulse and any sign of life. I couldn’t find anything. I stood up to confront the heartless new pilot. I never had the chance. He eyed me from the very corners of his dark pupil. “Well, well, well, if it isn’t Cole Steel. Been a while, hasn’t it?” a voice sneered. I turned around to see a gun pointed at my head. The gun didn’t surprise me but the wielder. By: Isheeta Lal, Year 9. Extracts from Year Eight English Descriptive Writing. I tumble around in the water, as the life-threatening wave towers over me. I shut my eyes and hold my breath. The ferocious wave roars louder and louder, and is getting closer by the second, but I can do nothing about it. I look up and get a better glimpse of the mighty waves. Suddenly, I feel a cold shiver all over my body. The wind is howling loudly. I am all by myself caught in this mess. Nobody else is anywhere to be seen. A large wave slams into me, sending me flying further out to sea. My left leg gets tangled in the coral underneath the salty water, and I desperately try to untangle it, trying not to drown. As a result, I bruise my left knee, badly. Pain. Torture. I can’t think of anything else at the moment. I feel like the world is over. I hear the whoosh from the waves as they crash towards the shore. I know it is going to be a long and hard journey. Fear and frustration fill my mind as I desperately try to stay afloat. Cold waves crash on top of me, taking me further and further away from the sanctuary of land. The sky is grey and the thunder rumbles angrily, and it starts to rain heavily. I can feel my soaking wet hair on my back. With half of my body frozen, I feebly try to swim against the tide with little success. With every kick, I feel a sharp, piercing pain on my left leg. I kick harder, attempting to get to shore, but it only makes the pain worse. In a blink of an eye, I am washed up onto the shore. The frothy, blue saltwater crashes onto the shore, then gently rolls up to the rising tide line, and slowly rolls back into the churning ocean water. It is all over, I think, smiling. I’m safe now. The sun peeking through the heavy, white clouds illuminates the sky in a dazzling orange glow. All is still and quiet apart from the chorus of crashing waves. Savera Sidhu and Divyanshi Singh We were stranded in the middle of the ocean, struggling to survive. Somalian pirates surrounded us. We waited patiently on the outside, but on the inside, we were panicking. Suddenly, a roaring, wet storm came over the Red Sea. The Somalian pirates went away and left us to drown. We wished we had gone through the Persian Gulf to deliver the oil, even though the Persian ships were blocking Saudi Arabia’s oil shipments. A few cannonballs dropped on our ship before the Somalian pirates ditched us. We tried to get inside of what was left of the boat, but right at that time, a massive wave gushed at us, and the ship started swaying side-to-side, whilst we tried to swim out of the thick oil that was oozing out of the barrels. It was a disaster. At last, we thought we saw a helicopter that was coming from Yemen, but we knew it couldn’t be, since there was such a harsh civil war going on right now, and the government wouldn’t waste time on a couple of people drowning. But we realised that was a Saudi Arabian rescue helicopter once we saw the flag. We leaped onto the ladder and climbed up to safety. Ayan Arain and Wenqi Yu 4

As the sun bloomed in the light of dawn, my crew and I set sail for the everlasting land of Narnia. The sea was harsh, banging on the rocks of the shore as if lions were roaring at the benevolent sky. The waves tumbled and rumbled across the deep horizon taking the ocean by its side. As the black clouds filled the sky, which gushed rain and thunder, the waves tucked my schooner on its side. I was holding on to the halyard like there was no tomorrow. In this case, there was going to be no tomorrow. The waves bashed down the hull of the ship. forcefully holding its currents. the ship started to tilt even more than it already was and not being able to hold I fell off the yard, falling into the vast ocean. Dwindling down from the mainsails plunging into the deep-sea, felt like death was on the brink of my soul. The screams of the crew were haunting and blood-curdling, plummeting to the bottom of the briny sea no matter how young or old. I managed to hold on to a piece of plank that fell off the sinking ship, although it helped me to float, it didn’t help with the strong seas and water currents. There was a huge wave that I could never forget; a giant shadow was over me and came with it was an enormous wave even bigger than the schooner. It was almost as if it was Poseidon himself who was trying to catch me with his hands. To think a harmless export to Narnia would lead to the devasting death trap. The ship was carried over me by the gigantic wave, washing me with it. The clouds had boomed, the rain had banged and the thunder came crashing down. Angry waves swiveled in irregular patterns, lefts, rights, going east, west, and even upwards. Sprays of cold seawater blasted in my face like spit, the wind deafening me as it flung my hair back and forth possessing my body. I glimpsed sunlight through the thick black clouds as it dragged me to the depths below. Jayden Duy Le and Alex Wang

Rōpū Sunderland

ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

ACG Sunderland’s new extra-curricular club about all things Māori, Rōpū Sunderland, has had an excellent first term. At the start of the term, students learnt how to make their own pepeha and learnt a simple karakia, also learning why a karakia is traditionally said at the start of a meeting. During one session, students learnt about Māori legends and compared the stories to Greek legends. Recently students have made their own poi and learnt how to use them. Students have also adorned rakau and practiced using them. One session was spent making and eating Māori fry-bread. During the sessions, use of Te Reo Māori is encouraged and students learn new incidental words and phrases each week. Māori students attending the club are encouraged to connect with their culture and talk about their own iwi’s traditions. Next term, we will be learning the words to the school song in Te Reo Māori, which we will also help to translate. The organisers will also be supporting us to create a school haka next term. The club runs on a Wednesday afternoon, 3.20-4.30pm, in L09 and is open to any College student. Anyone interested in attending can contact Miss Davies (megan.davies@acgedu.com) for more information.

Notices New Violin Teacher - Fiona Haughton

I am very pleased to announce that we will be having a new violin teacher start at ACG Sunderland. Teaching is something she is very passionate about. She holds a Bachelor of Music, with first class honours, from Victoria University in Wellington. She also has a Master’s Degree in Music from the University of British Columbia. She has played in a number of professional music organisations such as The NZ Symphony Orchestra and the NZ Opera Company. Mrs. Haughton has a great deal of experience as a violin instructor. She uses the Suzuki method as it is a well-proven and successful teaching pedagogy.

Her lessons will be on a Monday at Sunderland, starting the 15 March. Lessons will take place during the school day. If you are interested in your child taking violin lessons, then please do contact Mrs. Haughton directly to set up a time. mfhaughton@gmail.com At reception, there is a pamphlet entitled “Itinerant Music Lessons”. This form should be completed and given to Mr. O’Connor (via reception) before lessons start. This document outlines the costs and expectations that go with instrument Music lessons at our school. I would also like to let parents know that we have four, good quality, full sized violins that are available to be borrowed. There is no rental fee for these. I do hope a large number of students will be keen to take up violin lessons with Mrs. Haughton. We are very lucky to have her as our new string teacher. If you have any other questions about classroom or the itinerant music programme. Please do contact me. daniel.oconnor@acgedu.com

ACG Sunderland Students Invoices As I mentioned during January, we moved to a new finance system at the start of the year. The implementation has gone smoothly and we’d like to thank parents who have amended their reference when making payment by bank transfer to the Communication Reference Number. A small number of parents have not recognised the noreply-jde@inspirededu.com address that the invoices have been sent from, or have found that the emails have gone direct to junk. If you can please check these points if information is not coming through and, as always, please contact [EMAIL] at [NAME] or [NUMBER] if you have any accounts questions.
