Sharing a Child's Educational Journey Through Their Own Eyes: A Crucial Part of Holistic Development at ACG School Jakarta

At ACG School Jakarta, we believe that enabling students to share their educational journeys through their own perspectives is fundamental to their growth and development. By encouraging students to reflect on their learning and express it in various formats, we foster self-awareness, confidence, and a deeper connection between their academic progress and personal growth. This approach aligns with our commitment to holistic education, supporting students not just academically but also socially, emotionally, and physically.

Sharing Learning in the Primary Years

In the Primary School, assemblies play a vital role in allowing students to showcase their learning and achievements These presentations are often tied to the students' inquiry-based explorations within the Primary Years Programme (PYP). Whether reflecting on a project about environmental conservation or discussing efforts to promote sustainability, students are encouraged to present their findings to the wider school community. This process not only reinforces their understanding but also encourages them to see the relevance of their learning in real-world contexts.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

A key milestone for Year 6 students is the opportunity to present their PYP Exhibition projects during assembly. This exhibition allows students to explore a topic of personal interest in-depth, applying the knowledge and skills they have acquired over their years in the PYP. Presenting these projects to their peers and teachers fosters public speaking skills, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate complex ideas. It also serves as an inspiration for younger students, showing them the importance of taking ownership of their educational journey

Beyond academics, assemblies in the Primary School provide a platform for students to share their creative talents. From musical performances and drama to storytelling and art displays, these moments allow students to express themselves and develop confidence in their abilities These experiences are essential in nurturing well-rounded individuals who appreciate and celebrate diversity within the school community

Celebrating Success in the Secondary Years

In the Secondary School, students continue to use assemblies as a platform to reflect on and share their learning and personal growth. As a Cambridge Lower Secondary school, students are encouraged to present their projects, whether they are related to science, technology, or the humanities. These presentations enable them to articulate their understanding of subjects in a meaningful way, honing their communication and collaboration skills

For students in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), assemblies are a chance to share experiences from their Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) projects. These reflections are crucial, as they allow students to demonstrate the impact of their actions on their communities and personal development By presenting these projects, students learn to think critically about their role as global citizens and develop the skills necessary for making a positive difference

In addition to academic achievements, assemblies serve as a space for celebrating leadership and service. Students involved in initiatives such as the Student Council, sports teams, or community service programmes are invited to share their experiences, offering valuable insights into the leadership and teamwork skills they have developed. These presentations often inspire others to participate and contribute to the school community, fostering a culture of responsibility and collaboration.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Assemblies also provide a platform for students to showcase their talents in the performing arts Whether it’s a musical performance, a dance, or a dramatic piece, these moments allow students to express their creativity and build confidence in front of their peers. By sharing their talents, students develop not only artistic skills but also resilience and the courage to take risks in their learning journey

Building Confidence and Community

At both the Primary and Secondary levels, assemblies are more than just opportunities to share achievements they are celebrations of the school community’s collective growth. When students share their learning, they strengthen the bond between peers, teachers, and parents. This sense of community is vital in creating an environment where students feel supported and encouraged to take risks in their learning, reflect on their experiences, and strive for continuous improvement.

At ACG School Jakarta, we are committed to providing platforms where students can express their learning, share their talents, and reflect on their educational journeys. Through assemblies, we create an atmosphere where every student feels valued, empowered, and inspired to contribute positively to the world around them.

In conclusion, sharing a child’s educational journey through their own eyes is a crucial element of their growth as learners and individuals. By allowing students to reflect on their achievements, express their creativity, and share their experiences, ACG School Jakarta ensures that they emerge as confident, engaged, and compassionate global citizens, ready to tackle the challenges of an everchanging world.

Visit any Primary classroom or outdoor area and the resource you are guaranteed to find is blocks

In fact, whenever I’m asked what the first resource on my own wish list would be, it’s always blocks.

Whether these be large, small or combined with small world resources to create an inspiring ‘story factory’, block play and blocks have long featured as a staple of our learning environments.

However, there are questions we need to ask about blocks, as there are with any resource we provide, including:

Why do we provide blocks for children?

How do they connect blocks with the curriculum?

How do we support learning to unlock their potential?

We all know that young children have a natural desire to construct and create, we see this every day as they use the blocks to build new worlds, amazing structures, collaborate on complex designs and bring their ideas to life, but where does this start and how does it develop over time?

Stages of Block Play

Let’s consider for a moment, reflecting on the work of Harriet Johnson: The Art of Block Building, the types or stages of play we might see as children engage with these versatile resources.

Stage 1: Blocks are carried around, not used for construction

Stage 2: Building begins, mostly rows either horizontal or vertical, with stacking

Stage 3: Bridging, using two blocks with a space between them, connected by a third block

Stage 4: Enclosures, with blocks placed to enclose a space

Stage 5: Designs, patterns and elaborate structures emerge

Stage 6: Large scale co-operation, children plan with a purpose and use what they’ve built

Of course, we know that as part of their unique learning journey, children will explore, experiment and investigate resources in a myriad of ways and at different times, but these stages give us a clear framework for development

We can see from these just how easily children of different ages can access block play to build their confidence and expertise as they spend more time accessing this openended resource.

Curriculum links for Block Play

Block play offers a wealth of learning opportunities across the curriculum, especially when provided consistently year on year in a variety of contexts, and when combined with the potential for story telling through small world or role play. Here are just a few:

Physical skills: Fine and gross motor skills, handeye coordination, spatial awareness

Social & emotional skills: Autonomy, initiative, cooperation

Language & literacy skills: Vocabulary, beginnings of story re-call and creative story creations

Mathematical skills: Size, shape, 1-1 correspondence, comparison

Creative skills: Divergent thinking, imagination

Scientific skills: Similarities & differences, balance, cause and effect

Partners in learning

The key to unlocking the potential of any resource we offer is our understanding of child development and how children’s innate desire to experiment supports learning over time along with our knowledge of the curriculum.

Both of these strands guide how we interact with children as they experiment and create As we play alongside children in the block area we: Observe and take note of their key interests and fascinations

Respond to their requests and ideas

Sensitively suggest possibilities to extend their play and thinking

Model language and extend vocabulary

Support with the development of imaginative play

As we role model we are able to:

Model how to think aloud by making comments such as ‘I’ve not thought about that before’, ‘You’ve really made me think about ’ , ‘How might I…’

As we sensitively raise questions our purpose is to: Stimulate ideas and add challenge with questions such as ‘What do you notice about?’, ‘I wonder how?’

And when we are able to mobilise ourselves to teach effectively in these ways, we can unlock the power of our provision.

Dear ACG Parents, Students, and Families,

We’ve had a wonderful start to the new academic year for the senior cohorts. You may have read online that we had some extremely strong IBDP results from our May 2024 cohort, averaging well over the global average score and with a top score of 41 from Sana. This was an amazing achievement and placed her in the top 4% of students globally. We’re confident that our current cohorts are on track for some excellent results this May.

We have just returned from an extremely productive DP Retreat in Bogor. We took 48 students and did intensive workshops and teambuilding activities, ending with a lovely hike to a waterfall in Sentul. I’d like to express my thanks to all the students and parents for their support, and Ms. Parker, Ms. Dina, Mr. Chris and Mr. Kumar for participating and running sessions. We’re hopeful that this experience has benefited the students, especially the Year 13s in their final year. Photos to come soon!

I’d also like to welcome our new DP Teachers who have already made an excellent start to the year, both with our continuing and new students. Our new teachers are Ms. Reese Mattison (DP Visual Arts), Ms. Shinna Hutami (DP Chemistry), Mr. Alvince Adoyo (DP Mathematics and Chemistry), Mr Chris England (DP English A), Mr. Narinder Kumar (DP Physics) and Mr. Peter Park (DP Mathematics) I hope that you all get a chance to meet with them this term and make sure you arrange a time with them in our first Parent Teacher Student Conference, early Term 2.

I hope that everyone is doing well and please reach out if your child requires any support.

Kind regards,

MUNPreparation

AStepTowardsSuccess

On Friday, 27th September 2024, ACG School Jakarta hosted an insightful and interactive preparation session for students participating in the upcoming Model United Nations (MUN) competition.

Led by Mr. Christopher England, one of our English teachers with extensive MUN experience as a former coordinator at his previous school in Bogor, the event was designed to inspire and prepare our students for the challenge ahead.

Mr. England invited several experienced MUN students from his former school to share their personal experiences and offer valuable tips to our students. Held in the school gym, the session was highly interactive, with ACG School Jakarta students enthusiastically asking questions The visiting students were more than happy to provide thoughtful responses, offering guidance and advice on how to excel in MUN debates and negotiations

After the discussion, the visiting MUN team dedicated time to tutor and mentor our students who are already registered for the upcoming competition, offering personalized support and coaching.

So engrossed in their preparation, students lost track of time, highlighting their dedication and commitment to performing well in the event.

We are hopeful that with this strong preparation and collaborative effort, ACG School Jakarta will shine in the upcoming MUN competition. Best of luck to our future diplomats!

ACG School Jakarta recently held a productive Parent Representatives meeting, bringing together representatives from each year level with school leadership for a focused 3040 minute discussion. The meeting aimed to outline the role of Parent Representatives and explore upcoming events where parent involvement would be invaluable.

Key topics included plans for events like the Coffee Morning, a regular meet-up designed to foster stronger relationships among parents, and larger school events like the House Olympiad, which would benefit from parental support. Despite the brief meeting time, the discussions were efficient and purposeful, setting the stage for future collaboration between the school and the parent community.

We are excited about the upcoming opportunities to work closely with our Parent Representatives, and we look forward to a fantastic year of partnership ahead!
