ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term Two, Week Seven, 17 June 2022
Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, Unfortunately, I am writing my weekly newsletter today from home, as I recover from my turn of contracting Covid. I attended a friend’s 50th birthday and it would appear over 10 attendees also got a dose. I am feeling a lot better and will be back on board on Friday. I want to acknowledge Leanne Chartrand and the other wonderful Sunderland staff for covering in my absence. I know that the school has been settled and very positive in my absence. Mr Jules Robson, our new Deputy Principal, has been in at school this week working with the team with regards timetabling for 2023. I know he has really enjoyed the experience over the past three days.
At Orange Level, ACG Sunderland is working hard to protect our students and staff. All students and staff must wear a face mask in common areas like hallways, the library, reception, decks, Atrium/ Wings Café, and assemblies held in the gymnasium. To protect yourself and the Sunderland community please keep up healthy habits like social distancing where possible, stay home if unwell, hand sanitizing or washing hands, coughing or sneezing into your elbow, keeping doors/ windows open where possible to improve ventilation, and keep up with your vaccinations.

Last week we acknowledged Anya Thurner, as she crossed stage and received her Principal’s Badge – however, I didn’t share her wonderful news with the school community. Anya has been selected to represent New Zealand in the full NZ women’s class team to compete in the 44 Chess Olympiad in Chennai in August. This is an incredible achievement for our modest champion. We wish her all the very best.
I also want to acknowledge Mason Wang; he won five titles at the recently held North Island Secondary School Champs in Wellington. He also broke a fourteen-year-old record in the 100m butterfly. ACG Sunderland was ranked 16th out of all schools in the North Island. Well done Mason!
Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Year Eight have been learning about narrative, lyrical and free verst poetry. Here are some examples based on the theme ‘Growing Up’: Life Story I blow out the candles on my birthday cake, I feel excited that I will turn five, I eat as much as I can take, After we eat, we had a food break. Now I’m inside an exam room in silence, The topic of the exam I think is science, I walk out the room and look down the hall, It’s gotten so hard since I was small, Now I’m an adult and I have to work, Because I need food and a shelter to sleep, While at work my co-workers give a smirk, I lie in my bed while I am counting sheep. When you’re older you can finally rest, You can sleep all day, or invite some guests, You feel some pain when your old back bends, You lie in a bed until your misery ends. By Michael Law
Camping It's my favourite time of year We're off to Riverglen It's the end of January We are here again We go to our favourite spot And set up the tents Everyone is laughing and having fun You know what? It’s time for some summer fun! Nature, Trampolines, Fruit ice-cream Cold river water, slimy eels, Sandy riverbank, big rocks Late nights, glow worms, hungry possums Early mornings, waking up to the smell of blueberry pancakes Kids get older and things change, like me It’s been three years since our last trip But I still have fun memories and remember the good times I wish I didn’t have to grow up so fast. I only grow and I will continue to do so
I only grow and I will continue to do so. I grow out of clothes; I grow out of habits. Some things I used to like; I don’t lime anymore. I’ve learned to control my red moments; I still like reading folklore. Seeds only grow into trees; and then grow leaves; though trees don’t shrink back into seeds. By Musa Balabyeki

"No Planet B" Severe increase in Kina or Sea Urchins – An Example of a Minor Issue Causing a Major Problem Kina are a kind of sea urchin endemic to New Zealand. They can reach a maximum diameter of around 1617cm and have become a traditional component of the Maori diet and are still commonly consumed today. Kina are found in shallow waters, and are in both the North and South of New Zealand. They primarily feed on algae and kelp, and are eaten by snapper, starfish and other crustaceans such as the spiny lobster. Recently, there has been a severe increase in the number of Kina in our waters, surprisingly, this has several negative effects on the ecosystem, and biodiversity in our oceans. First, too many Kina can entirely eat away at kelp forests, destroying them completely, leaving bare rocks behind and creating what is called a Kina barren. Kina barrens severely affect the rest of the food chain as kelp is what holds up an entire ecosystem of marine animals through provision of shelter, nursery areas and food. Without kelp forests, the entire marine ecosystem collapses causing a decrease in biodiversity and several other, much larger, issues in the long run such as mass extinction. So, what are the causes of this increase in Kina? First, overfishing of snapper. Snapper are beautiful fish that can grow to one meter under the right conditions. They are often red, with blue, sparkly spots on their bodies. They feed on crustaceans, shellfish, other fish and sea urchins. Snapper, are a very important predator of Kina (sea urchins) and due to overfishing the food chain has been severely disrupted, causing Kina numbers to severely increase. Second, warmer sea temperatures. It is a well-known fact that the sea temperature is rising. This is due to the ocean absorbing more heat as a result of increased greenhouse gases trapping more energy from the sun. This rise in sea temperature is yet another reason why Kina numbers are booming – Kina raised at 24 degrees Celsius were smaller in size, and grew slower, however Kina raised at 22 degrees Celsius were large, and grew quickly. The highest average sea temperature was 21.2 degrees Celsius in February – the optimum temperature for Kina. This problem is not a difficult one to solve, only time and dedication are necessary to make change. First, we need to stop overfishing snapper. Yes, there are already limits on how many snapper you can fish, however these limits are not strict enough, or enforced harshly enough. If we cut down on how much fish we consume, and how much we fish up, there will be significant and positive results on the entire marine ecosystem. Second, there isn’t much we can do in terms of water temperature increase: however some simple things you can do to make a small change are the classic actions you probably already know of. Recycle, turn your lights and any unnecessary electricity off, reduces your transport emissions. I guarantee you have heard of all of these before, and now is the time to finally implement them. In conclusion, the severe increase in the number of Kina in New Zealand waters has several affects on the marine ecosystem, and this particular issue is one of many caused by our actions. The example of Kina increasing is one that proves how delicate the ecosystem is balanced, and if one thing changes, everything can collapse. By Amelia Lee - Year 10

Smokefree Rockquest For those of you who aren’t familiar, Smokefreerockquest is a competition for bands and solo/duo musicians to take part in music competitions using their own original material. As per their website, Smokefreerockquest is: New Zealand's nationwide, live, original music, youth event giving young musicians the opportunity to perform live in a professional setting, in venues from Northland to Southland and last weekend, three of ACG Sunderland’s bands got to perform in the Central Auckland Regionals: sweet can’t wait, Victorious and The Barn Project. Just for a little more background information, Rockquest promotions was founded by Glenn Common and Pete Rainey in the late 80s. Rockquest also runs events like Smokefree Tangata Beats, Rockshop Bandquest and Showquest. The first thing I noted when I got there is that they had amazing equipment and even a practice setup, fit with equipment such as electric drums and headphones for the bands to warm up on before our performances. We all got to perform in front of a live audience (which we were allowed to join when we weren’t performing) and the entire show was livestreamed. Our performance went fairly well, although one thing I noted was how quickly it seemed to go by. We’d been practicing for so long, yet our performance only lasted for around three minutes. It was a bizarre feeling after performing, some sort of odd mix of happiness and relief that it was over and all our hard work leading up to this had finally been put to use. Although performing was a great experience, my favourite part of the day was watching the other bands perform. As we were one of the first bands to perform, we could watch the other bands performing without stressing about our own. We had the opportunity to watch many talented bands perform with instruments such as the saxophone and cello making an appearance.
Overall, this was an incredible experience and a huge congratulations to The Barn Project for making it into the regional finals! By Anya Thurner – Year 10

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S). What is our Mission statement? To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community. To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination. How to get involved or get your badge? We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service. Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate.
