WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term Two, Week Seven, 18 June 2021 Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, After examinations, Grandparents day, Book Week, Cross Country and all of the other activities that go on here at Sunderland, its been a nice change this week to have a (nearly) full week back in class with a focus back on teaching and learning. I say nearly, as our Year Ones and Twos had a day offsite on Tuesday at Kelly Tarlton’s and I know they had a great time. A big thanks to Miss Van Rooyen, who planned and organised the trip, and the rest of the Year One and Two teachers and parent helpers who made the day such a success.

For the college, this week has been a complete week back in classes. With examination reviews now complete, the focus is on new material and settling back into a normal pattern. While examinations are somewhat of a distant memory for the students, they are in the front of their mind for staff, as they complete writing our academic reports which will go out at the end of the term. For many schools, reports are now a checkbox exercise and a minimum of words. Ours remain a formal opportunity to feedback to parents on the examinations and each students performance at school through the first two terms of the year. I firmly believe its critical that this type of feedback goes home, so both students and parents are clear on where students are in their academic journey and what their next steps should be. There will be an opportunity to discuss these reports and where students are at with their classroom teachers at the start of next term, with parent-teacher interviews scheduled for the Tuesday and Wednesday late afternoon/evening in the first week of term. An email will be sent out to the community early in the last week of the holiday break when the booking system goes active. In the primary, while all the normal teaching takes place, a lot of planning is going on for next week, with our annual Swimming Carnival taking place next Wednesday. Primary students have been involved in a swimming programme throughout the term and a big thank you goes to all of the primary staff who are involved with this, as I know it’s a big undertaking. This is a critical programme-we do live on an island and the sea is never far away, no matter where we are in New Zealand. Being able to swim at even a basic level should be a skill every child in New Zealand is taught, hence why we take the time to make sure this happens at Sunderland. A big thanks in advance to the primary staff for all the work going in to make next Wednesday a success. Finally, I would like to welcome Mrs Tammy Rubin to ACG Sunderland. Mrs Hayley Carter went on her maternity leave last Friday and Mrs Rubin started with us this week taking over her programme. Mrs Rubin comes to Sunderland having just completed her own maternity leave after spending time at both St Kentigern College and Kelston Boys High School in the past. She is an experienced Art teacher and I am sure is going to add a lot to our art programmes here at ACG Sunderland – we are very happy to have her joining our school.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Student Success The NISSC 2021 has finished. Mason Wang, Year Ten broke one Short Course National 13yrs Age Group record in 100m Fly and an Auckland age group record in 50m Fly. He won three gold medals in 100m fly, 100m IM & 50m Fly and silver in 50m & 100m Fr. ACG scored 120 points and was ranked 15th for males among 38 schools, which is fantastic as there was only one swimmer in the team. Congratulations, Mason.

STUDENTS VOICE Cross Country Here at ACG Sunderland we had Cross Country last Wednesday, and it was a blast. Cross Country isn’t all about your age group race. The House Relays are a huge part of the Cross-Country tradition, which going on the whole time until the day is over. The house relay is really the only way your house can gain a huge number of points except from the tug of war which takes place at the end of the day and what place you come. My personal best isn’t phenomenal compared to everyone else when it comes to running. I was nervous at the start of race. Whilst I was running, I really needed to stop and catch my breath, but I was worried if someone saw me walking, I would be classified as a “lazy pants”, so I kept going even thought I was overwhelmed by the pain. In the end it was all worth it I earned some points for my house. Cross Country isn’t something everyone looks forward to. Running for a long time isn’t always the best, but they all participate anyway and are quite proud at the end. Altogether Cross Country was great and exciting, and I am looking forward to it next year! By: ShantiPushpal Ramachandra, Year 9

STUDENTS VOICE

ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

Crimson Infinitum – An Unprecedented Reality Waking from his divan in the northeast corner of his room, Harry is weary from head to toe after a long night tossing and turning under his barely insulating blanket. He stayed up listening to the wind howling in the frosty oak forest above his top-floor living quarters in his underground, rabbit-hole bunker. As he reluctantly forced his feet to escort himself out of his room, he suddenly noticed the glimmer of aqua blue light increasing rapidly into a glare of stunning brightness being emitted from his brick roof. It was spreading at the speed of light, all around the staircase he now stood on. This out-of-the-blue event knocked the weariness out of the boy, putting him on high alert. Then the light faded as fast as it had come. As Harry worked his way down the winding stairwell, leading to his quarters, he took each step with extreme caution. He believed the light emitted from an alien like that of the ones that now dominated the Earth’s surface, forcing Harry to live underground - blueish, fluid, and thirsty for human blood. He did not wish to disturb the vicious creature for fear of the aftermath. By the time his trembling sole touched down on the floor of the grand public living room that he shared with his parents, it was already half an hour later after his sighting of the blob of intense aura. Then, once again seeing the blue light flash on the wall directly in front of him, Harry, in fright, tumbled into the bookshelves of ample reading material behind him. And there the light was – appearing with sudden velocity, then engulfing Harry into a deafening silence of fiery white light. He stood up, and to his delight, saw that the blue aura no longer existed in his field of vision. Around him was the fresh scent of revitalized grass after a thunderstorm, and a sunlit plain of green grass. After a few moments, a familiar figure approached Harry Houston’s rear, and then whispered, “Come with me, Harry. You are not safer in your bunker than out in the winter wilderness”. My first badminton game in ACG Sunderland Last Monday, my badminton team played a game against the other Sunderland teams after school. It was my first badminton game, so I was a little nervous, but this was a game that I was dying to play. Before this game, every badminton player had to arrive at school at 6.30am for a quick practice. Being super veracious, it was a little hard waking up early in the mornings, especially on Mondays, but I knew I had to get up and start my day. During the badminton game, I was surprised how talented the other team players were! They could hit the shuttlecock really hard and fast as it came towards them. I tried my best, as I was supposed to, and hit the shuttlecock as much as I could when it was passed on to me. I missed some points dolefully, but I still tried my best. After playing against the other team, the game conclusively ended. I was surprised, the game ended much faster than I was expecting it to. Sadly, my team lost with zero wins. I’m not disappointed that my team lost, since the other team was so good! But I am ecstatic that my team tried their best! Next time I want my team to be victorious against the other team, and hopefully build up our teamwork! By: Aileen Yim, Year 9
