WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term One, Week Eight, 18 March 2022

Sunderland@acgedu.com

Term 1 Football Form Class Competition Every term, a form class competition is held to determine the best form class in different sports. After some decision making by the Sports Council, football was determined as Term One's competition. On Tuesday, every form class played against another to start off the knock-out style tournament. With clusters of people watching and cheering on the side lines and music playing in the background, the competition was well underway. The first day ended the first round along with the championship hopes of seven form classes. Wednesday started the next round and luck was on 7SSH’s side as they were drawn as the round’s wildcard. Finally, Thursday was the last day of the competition. 7DVR and VGRM’s hopes were revived when it was decided they would be the last wild cards. The remaining form classes played fiercely to win the tournament, but every competition must have its winner. The finals came down to VOLK against VDNG. Goals were scored, players were tackled, and shots were saved. However, it just wasn’t enough for one team and so, the winner of Term One’s Football Form Class Competition is VDNG! Congratulations to them, I hope they’re happy with their bragging rights. Also, a thank you to everyone else who participated and gave it their best shot. Who knows, maybe you’ll win the next one.

"No Planet B" Ozone Layer Depletion For us kiwis, ozone layer depletion is a particularly relevant subject. Many of us have heard of this issue, but what is ozone layer depletion and why exactly is it so harmful to us and the environment? The ozone layer is defined as a thin part of the Earth’s atmosphere that absorbs almost all the sun’s harmful UV light; and depletion is defined as the reduction of the number or quantity of something. When put like this, it becomes more obvious what ozone layer depletion is. It first started to become an issue for New Zealanders in the 1980s and 1990s where there was a decrease in the ozone above NZ. Although the infamous hole in the ozone layer isn’t quite above Aotearoa, the ozone layer is still rather thin here, due to decades worth of man-made gas emissions. Ozone depletion has many effects on the environment. For example, excessive amounts of UV light can reduce photosynthesis and therefore plant growth, but it’s not just the plants and trees that ozone depletion affects. UV-B radiation has been proved to damage marine life such as fish, shrimp, and crab in their early stages. It has also been shown that the radiation may negatively affect their reproductive capacity, which could cause problems regarding the food chain. UV radiation has serious effects to humans too, some of these include increased risks of sunburn, melanoma, and eye problems, to name a few. As you can see, excessive UV radiation has many effects on almost everything around us, so what can we do about it?

To protect ourselves: ‘slip, slop, slap and wrap’ is used in many schools across the country, and for good reason. In case you’re not familiar with the saying, you should slip into the shade, slop on some sunscreen, slap on a hat and make sure your sunglasses wrap around your eyes for protection. It’s also recommended to use SPF 15-30+ sunscreen and try to avoid being outside in the sun between 11am and 4pm, especially during the summer. There are also ways to try and prevent ozone depletion, such as disposing of refrigerators correctly and maintaining your cars air conditioning system. This will help prevent CFCs from being released in the air. CFCs gradually destroy the ozone layer, so it is vital that we learn to prevent too much of them from being released into the air. Ozone layer depletion is a major problem here in Aotearoa, and it’s important to educate ourselves on the matter and on how we can protect our loved ones and the environment around us from it.

Why are Masks so Controversial? To wear or not to wear? A frequently asked question during the COVID-19 pandemic. So why not discuss this very controversial topic and share every viewpoint? Obviously, health organizations recommend that we wear masks, even cloth masks are better than nothing. But a lot of people have a different opinion. Let’s talk about this and look at it from their perspective. Most anti-maskers believe that masks are not helpful and are taking away their freedom. Some have even taken further lengths and protested to remove the mask mandate. Others are simply tired of having to wear facial coverings. Several anti-maskers do not know any people who have contracted the virus, and don’t care about people who are not as healthy as themselves and may be immunocompromised. However, pro-maskers contradict this. They believe masks are extremely helpful, and it is better to wear a somewhat-bothersome mask than get COVID. It has been asked countless times why people are so rebellious and refuse to put on a face covering. In my opinion I believe masks are helpful, the mask mandate is very necessary and protects surrounding people and yourself.

Teachers Off With COVID COVID, COVID, COVID... It’s not going away anytime soon. People don’t realise that it’s taking a massive toll on students and their education’s especially with their specialty educators being off with COVID! I asked a few students for their opinion on the situation; here’s what they had to say. Maggie Chen Year 9 – It’s good that they are isolating so we can’t catch COVID, but because teachers interact with students on a daily basis it’s a little difficult. Caitlin O’Connor Year 9 – With teachers being off with COVID (they should be off when infectious for obvious reasons) it impacts students a lot! Having a different reliever every day is hard because they all have different rules, learning standards and styles of teaching, not having your normal teacher also gives students less motivation and it’s easier to not pay attention and just slack-off. Anonymous – Having Relievers is very difficult especially in specialty subjects such as Computer Science, Design Technology, Art Etc. Because when you need help the relievers struggle to assist you when that is not their main subject. Amelia Lee Year 10 - I feel that it was inevitable that teachers would be off with COVID; but nevertheless, it did come as a bit of a surprise that suddenly they just weren't here anymore. However, I think they have been doing a really good job to make sure that we still learn well, and don't fall behind at all. Students have different yet similar opinions on the situation its not easy for anyone but its especially hard on the students.
