ACG SUNDERLAND WINGS NEWSLETTER

Vol 18, Term Four, Week Six, 18 November 2022

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland,

On Wednesday evening, I had the privilege of attending the annual Year Six Graduation, this year held at Kumeu Valley Estate, due to an increase in student numbers. With forty Year Six students in attendance, plus their parents and staff too, we all assisted these young people in celebrating this important milestone, the transition from Primary to College.

The guest speakers were our Head Boy and Head Girl Anshul Sharma and Mia Shankar and they both had some excellent messages for these young people. This was the first time we were able to come together and host this event since November 2019, so it was extra special. I wish to acknowledge the staff and in particular Mrs Chartrand for organising this event.

On the same night, our Year Seven to Nine students were on stage back at school with the Faculty of Arts Showcase: Drama, Music, Design & Technology named ‘Futurescape’. In fact, there were three performances, one on Tuesday matinee and then on Wednesday and Thursday.

All visitors and items being dropped off for children – must report to reception – please do not go directly to the classrooms.

Again, this was the first production held in two years and I was so very proud of what the students have accomplished.

The small plays from each class were written by students, acted by students, and with all the lighting and sound being directed by our young ones too. On display also were Art and Design and Technology creations, again showcasing our wonderful your people.

On Monday through to Wednesday next week, our students from Year Six to Eleven are going on camp around the Auckland isthmus and beyond.

Year Six Northland Year Seven Kokako Lodge Hunua

Year Eight Muriwai Year Nine Camp Adair

Year Ten Hunua Year Eleven Waipu Cove

I know all the students will really enjoy the experience away from the classroom and seeing the staff in a different light too.

Mr Robson and I will visit many of the camps on Monday afternoon and see how everyone is getting on.

We are now only two weeks away from the end of the academic year and there are so many other exciting experiences to take place, with Mufti Day, Legacy Day, School Picnic and Prizegiving all still to come.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

Early Learning School

Under 2’s Room

The Under 2s' outdoor space has recently been reorganised to further challenge the children and encourage them to explore their physical capabilities. This week, they have been enjoying developing their gross motor skills and supporting one another as they climb and balance on the equipment. Ka pai tō mahi, Under 2s!

Junior Room

Another fun filled week of learning for the Junior Room! Focusing on our schematic learning of transformation, the children were able to experiment with water and ice; observing how water can transform from a liquid to a solid. To highlight the transformation process, children placed small animals into water and noticed how the animals were stuck solid in the water once it had frozen. The Junior Room had as early special visit from Santa! Who kindly shared some delicious ice blocks with the children, thank you Santa!

Orientation Day Visit from Santa

On Tuesday we conducted our annual Orientation Day. This is where all our current student move up a year and our new students come into the school to experience a few hours and to get to feel what their 2023 year will be like.

They get to meet their peers and classmates for the following year and also get to meet their new teachers. This was conducted for Primary and College.

The children were lucky enough to have a visit from Santa who delivered ice blocks to the children. Even some of the teachers were surprised by Santa.

Parents and Friends Committee

Dear Parents and Friends of ACG Sunderland

ACG Sunderland is an independent school whose students are of incredibly diverse ethnicity. From pre school to senior college the school strives to help their students achieve their full potential. The Parents and Friends Committee works alongside this aim of the school.

Parents and Friends is a committee run by volunteers all, unsurprisingly, are friends or families of the school! The committee raises funds to cover items of benefit to the students that are not covered by school fees. In the past this has included such things as donations to the school ball, shade sails over playgrounds, cricket nets, and the planting of a hedge for privacy at the front of the primary playground.

All activities run by Parents and Friends are fun, social activities that help to instil a feeling of belonging throughout all families attending the school. Meetings take place on the first Thursday of every month at 8.30am in the staffroom. Please let Mrs Sonya Eldridge know if you are interested in joining the committee by email: sonya.eldridge@acgedu.com

The next meeting is Thursday 1 December 2022.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland

Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S).

What is our Mission statement?

To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community.

To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination.

How to get involved or get your badge?

We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service.

Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate.
