ACG WINGSSUNDERLANDNEWSLETTERVol18,TermThree,WeekFour,19August2022 Open Day – Saturday 17 September 2022 10.30am – 2.30pm

There’s a law which summarises the influences of pressure on performance, which I quite like. It is called the “Yerkes Dodson Law,” developed by two psychologists, Yerkes and Dodson. Basically, this law dictates how your performance in a particular matter is affected by your stress levels, or how “hyped” or excited you feel. As from the bell shaped curve, you could depict that a balance between a mid level amount of stress would provide you the best performance in studies, or any other situation. A low stress state might be a lack of motivation, whereas a high stress state could be a situation where you feel extremely anxious and obsessed over something. The most comfortable position to be in would be a balance between the two. Often, I find myself anxious over my potential grades and the smallest missteps. I am sure many other students, and even adults, have this “all or nothing” mindset. However, this way of thinking might fall into the far right side of the curve, causing the quality of your performance in a certain matter to decline greatly. It can also be difficult to get rid of this mindset, as we fear that we might fall into the opposite end of the curve, failing to achieve the results we hope to get (ironic!).
However, we must realise the importance of taking care of ourselves, both physically and psychologically. Even if you were to study “all out,” at what point will you end up with burn out? Of course, sitting an exam while at your limit is not the way to go.

Preparing for Exams
Exams are right around the corner, and I am sure that many senior students, including myself, are feeling a little stressed. With the addition of discussions about selecting subjects and even admissions for future study, it has finally dawned on us how important these upcoming exams are. At this point, I can’t help but ask myself: “Will I pass?” or “Will I be good enough?”
College Enough about this graph that looks like it had been whipped straight out of Mr Gottard’s Physics classes. So, how can we help ourselves perform the best that we can, as well as ensuring that we are enjoying what we do and that we also have the motivation to keep Perhapsgoing?

Instead of using non renewable resources, we should switch to renewable resources to reduce carbon emissions.
Let’s start with the basics. What are fossil fuels? Fossil fuels are made from decomposing plants and animals; they can be burned for energy, which is our use for them. Fossil fuels are non renewable resources which means we need to wait for them to form which can take millions of years, this is not ideal because fossil fuels cannot renew as fast as we use them up, meaning eventually we will run out. Fossil fuels are responsible for 3/4 of the carbon emissions in the past twenty years. Why should we stop? Well, you already know fossil fuels play a large role in climate change, if we want to slow climate change, it is likely only going to happen if we minimise or completely stop using fossil fuels. There are better alternatives which are renewable and do little to no harm to the environment. Some examples are: solar energy, geothermal energy, biomass from plants and, hydropower from flowing water.

you have a particular class or subject that you just don’t enjoy or care enough about. Sometimes giving yourself a little pressure in this situation can help, or even reminding yourself the benefits which come out of this subject, apart from a potential grade. All the subjects we choose from are unique in their own way.

On the other hand, do your best to keep your anxiety levels in check. Maybe you can take little breaks throughout a study session by petting your dog or even walking to the kitchen for a glass of water. Although it is paramount to ensure your mind is focussed on your studies right now, we also need to ensure that it gets the rest it requires so it can work properly again! In other words, attempting an “all nighter” is just not desirable in many ways, as the negative impacts it has on your health just does not balance with the extra little study you might have Overall, acquired.the pressure to perform well in exams might not be the best source of motivation for you at the moment. Just think about it. Will constantly stressing over exams really help you? Perhaps you need to take a rest, listen to some music, or sit down with your friends and chat about something you truly enjoy. Go take the necessary break!
Chess Olympiad Performance I won six games, drew one and lost two leaving me on an individual score of 6.5 out of 9. One of the players I beat was a Women’s FIDE Masters from Denmark with a rating of almost 2000 (my rating at the time was around 1600 (it should be going up soon due to my performance in the tournament) and the player I drew against was a Women’s FIDE Master from Malaysia with a rating of around 1900. As I scored more than 65% out of 9 games, I qualified for conditional Women’s FIDE Master which means I will automatically get the Women's FIDE Master title once I reach a rating of 1900. After this tournament my rating should be almost at a rating of As1700.ateam, the women’s team came 67th out of 161 (162 if I include Pakistan who pulled out. By Anya Thurner Year 10

House Spirit Certificates and Badges
This term, the student leadership team is proud to present a new measure to recognize students who embrace their sense of house spirit, the House Spirit Certificates and Badges! When students are seen to be displaying pride, enthusiasm, leadership and participation during House meetings and events, they can be awarded a House Spirit Certificate by that teacher. Once a student has accumulated ten of these certificates, they can hand them into reception, and then they will receive a House Spirit Badge at assembly.
