WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term One, Week Ten, 1 April 2022
Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, It’s another beautiful Autumn morning with a crisp early air temperature, little wind and the prospect of having a mid-20°c day. On top of that, the COVID numbers in Auckland continue to track down as do the numbers here at Sunderland - today the number was 6. I wish to thank you for the confidence you have shown in the school and how we have managed the pandemic, with most children now having returned to school. The numbers in the College are near on 100% and in the Primary well over 85% in both the upper and lower sectors. That means that hybrid lessons are now not required, and that some sort of normality has returned to school. On Tuesday, we were able to hold our first assembly in ten weeks – albeit outside. Nonetheless, it was wonderful to have everyone face-to-face for the first time in the College. Next week, both the Primary and College will have assemblies outside, weather permitting. The College one will be the delayed Scholars assembly, perhaps one of the most important assemblies of the year. Parents of students receiving an award will have been contacted this week by Mrs Victoria Ogden. It will be so nice to see parents again at Sunderland.
To be kept up to date with Covid-19 and school information, please advise any changes in your address, phone or email to Sunderland@acgedu.com

Our new Preschool should have received their licence at the end of this week – meaning that we will be able to open on time on 11 April. This will be a wonderful celebration for the Preschool, as finally we can expand our numbers. Parents, if you wish to reserve your place at our new centre, please see Linda Storey, our Enrolments Manager, at Reception. Next term, we will be starting a new traffic management system around the school. There will be significant changes from what currently is occurring. A map and instructions will be distributed next month to assist people with the new plan. I do request in the interim, that you continue to be courteous and respectful of our neighbours and our staff. Congratulation to our First Eleven for winning their grade this season. Last year they were runners up and this season they have gone one better. Special thanks to Mr Stephens for again coaching and managing this side.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Sunderland First XI vs Waitakere/Hobsonville Saturday 26th March This game was the final of the Central West T20 league. Sunderland fielded first and quickly had Waitakere/Hobsonville in trouble with very accurate bowling and some good catches being taken. All the Sunderland bowlers kept the pressure on bowling out the Waitakere/Hobsonville team in 16 overs for 71 runs. Finn O’Connor leading the attack with 4 wickets for 6 runs from his 4 overs. Sahil Patel and Finn O’Connor then made short work of the target, Sahil the only wicket to fall for a hard-hitting 42 runs – Sunderland reaching the target 1 wicket down in 8.4 overs. A win to Sunderland by 9 wickets and the team are the 2022 Central/West champions.

Preschool had a great fun this week. Children enjoyed many literacy and numeracy-based activities. We continue to look at shapes and numbers, as some of our children had just come back after long time. Preschool also helps with the development of social skills and positive self-esteem. As part of the preschool curriculum, preschool children also develop a connection between letters and sounds, and they know some of the sounds that letters make.
Children learned how to share and cooperate, work together, take turns, participate in group activities, follow simple directions, and communicate with teachers and other children.

World War 3 War rages on forever. Few survive omicrons fever. Men sign up to fight, like black Americans looking for their right. As the battle rages on... Bang! Whoosh! Boom! A tank is gone. Rifles firing without pause, Men dying without cause. NATO powers unite! Get us out of missile strikes D-day has raged for many hours. Grandma's giving flowers to the Russian military before they die, let us remember the reason why they sacrificed and gave up their lives. End this vile massacre now. before anybody else enters hell.

“On Friday the 18th of March, the Festivals Club celebrated Holi by having a large rangoli coloured by the students. Holi is a festival of colours, having originated in India, and the colourful fun is enjoyed internationally. Traditionally, coloured water and powders are thrown and sprayed around. The Holi festival is a fun festival that dates back thousands of years. The completed rangoli was a pleasant sight that didn’t survive until Monday due to the torrents of rain over the weekend.

Environmental Issues – Ocean Acidification Environmental issues, what a broad topic, a salient one definitely. There are a couple concepts that are not such hot topics, but equally important. Discovered by Ken Caldeira and Michael Wickett, ocean acidification is the ongoing decrease in the pH value of the earth’s ocean; mainly caused by carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere, dissolving into the ocean. This leads to a lowering of the water’s pH value, making the ocean more acidic. The problem here is not enough people know about this issue, especially the people who make it worse. The main cause of ocean acidification, from carbon dioxide, is human activities, namely the burning of fossil fuels. So, it’s the people causing the problem; not natural things, which means that this issue is quite simple to solve. So, why is it not being addressed? Obviously, the halting of burning of fossil fuels is not ideal, because they are essential to generate energy – which we use for generating electricity, to power transportation, and industrial processes. Many scientists and universities are attempting to create solutions for other ways to generate energy. The government is also working to reduce two categories of pollution that cause ocean acidification: carbon dioxide emissions and excess nutrients, furthermore they are collaborating with federal and non-federal partners to monitor ocean acidification. To summarise, we can stop ocean acidification by cutting carbon pollution drastically and immediately. We are exerting a massive influence on the oceans with unpredictable and potentially catastrophic consequences if we continue to pollute it. Let’s look at statistics now. The polar oceans in the Arctic and the Antarctic are particularly sensitive to ocean acidification. New Zealand is relatively close to Antarctica, so the waters surrounding NZ are prone to acidification. There has been a decrease in pH from 8.095 to 8.044 over the past 20 years (1987 – 2017), this corresponds to a 7.1% increase in acidity. Overall, in the world the acidity in the oceans has increased by 26% since about 1850, a rate of change roughly ten times faster than any other time in the last 55 million years! 9

Animals certainly get affected by ocean acidification, mainly shell-forming animals and plants like corals, crabs, oysters, planktons, fish and urchins, because ocean acidification robs seawater of the compounds these creatures need to build shells and skeleton. As a result, they will have weak shells, impairing their development and survival. According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), ocean acidification has the potential for altering biodiversity, species composition, tourism, fishing industries and the entire food web. Over one billion people around the world depend on food from the ocean as their primary source of protein. Hopefully after reading this article you understand the danger of ocean acidification. I hope you learnt something, because every bit of education helps.

Year 9 Compared to Year 10 Greetings! My name is Zyna, and I am a Sunderland Year 10 student. This is my first-time writing, as I’ve only recently joined The Student Voice. I came to ACG last year and have had a great experience here; since I've received a wonderful education and made a lot of new friends. Year 10 has been fantastic so far; however, it is really different from year 9. Year 10 necessitates a lot of notetaking, and science particularly is a lot more stressful, because there is so much more knowledge to absorb. Year 10 is a lot more hectic, but personally, I think that’s excellent since it prepares us for IGCSE. Year 10 also requires more test preparation, in comparison to year 9. Cycle tests are much more difficult, and you must revise more than you did in year 9. Finally, year 10 also entails a significant increase in duties and workload, teachers have much higher expectations of us, and are less lenient when marking. So far, I have really enjoyed year 10, and am looking forward to the rest of the year; learning new things; and spending time with my friends.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S). What is our Mission statement? To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community. To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination. How to get involved or get your badge? We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service. Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate. Below is the information for the badges:
