WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term One, Week Ten, 1 April 2022
To be kept up to date with Covid-19 and school information, please advise any changes in your address, phone or email to Sunderland@acgedu.com

Preschool had a great fun this week. Children enjoyed many literacy and numeracy-based activities. We continue to look at shapes and numbers, as some of our children had just come back after long time. Preschool also helps with the development of social skills and positive self-esteem. As part of the preschool curriculum, preschool children also develop a connection between letters and sounds, and they know some of the sounds that letters make.
Children learned how to share and cooperate, work together, take turns, participate in group activities, follow simple directions, and communicate with teachers and other children.

World War 3 War rages on forever. Few survive omicrons fever. Men sign up to fight, like black Americans looking for their right. As the battle rages on... Bang! Whoosh! Boom! A tank is gone. Rifles firing without pause, Men dying without cause. NATO powers unite! Get us out of missile strikes D-day has raged for many hours. Grandma's giving flowers to the Russian military before they die, let us remember the reason why they sacrificed and gave up their lives. End this vile massacre now. before anybody else enters hell.

“On Friday the 18th of March, the Festivals Club celebrated Holi by having a large rangoli coloured by the students. Holi is a festival of colours, having originated in India, and the colourful fun is enjoyed internationally. Traditionally, coloured water and powders are thrown and sprayed around. The Holi festival is a fun festival that dates back thousands of years. The completed rangoli was a pleasant sight that didn’t survive until Monday due to the torrents of rain over the weekend.

Environmental Issues – Ocean Acidification Environmental issues, what a broad topic, a salient one definitely. There are a couple concepts that are not such hot topics, but equally important. Discovered by Ken Caldeira and Michael Wickett, ocean acidification is the ongoing decrease in the pH value of the earth’s ocean; mainly caused by carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere, dissolving into the ocean. This leads to a lowering of the water’s pH value, making the ocean more acidic. The problem here is not enough people know about this issue, especially the people who make it worse. The main cause of ocean acidification, from carbon dioxide, is human activities, namely the burning of fossil fuels. So, it’s the people causing the problem; not natural things, which means that this issue is quite simple to solve. So, why is it not being addressed? Obviously, the halting of burning of fossil fuels is not ideal, because they are essential to generate energy – which we use for generating electricity, to power transportation, and industrial processes. Many scientists and universities are attempting to create solutions for other ways to generate energy. The government is also working to reduce two categories of pollution that cause ocean acidification: carbon dioxide emissions and excess nutrients, furthermore they are collaborating with federal and non-federal partners to monitor ocean acidification. To summarise, we can stop ocean acidification by cutting carbon pollution drastically and immediately. We are exerting a massive influence on the oceans with unpredictable and potentially catastrophic consequences if we continue to pollute it. Let’s look at statistics now. The polar oceans in the Arctic and the Antarctic are particularly sensitive to ocean acidification. New Zealand is relatively close to Antarctica, so the waters surrounding NZ are prone to acidification. There has been a decrease in pH from 8.095 to 8.044 over the past 20 years (1987 – 2017), this corresponds to a 7.1% increase in acidity. Overall, in the world the acidity in the oceans has increased by 26% since about 1850, a rate of change roughly ten times faster than any other time in the last 55 million years! 9

Animals certainly get affected by ocean acidification, mainly shell-forming animals and plants like corals, crabs, oysters, planktons, fish and urchins, because ocean acidification robs seawater of the compounds these creatures need to build shells and skeleton. As a result, they will have weak shells, impairing their development and survival. According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), ocean acidification has the potential for altering biodiversity, species composition, tourism, fishing industries and the entire food web. Over one billion people around the world depend on food from the ocean as their primary source of protein. Hopefully after reading this article you understand the danger of ocean acidification. I hope you learnt something, because every bit of education helps.

Year 9 Compared to Year 10 Greetings! My name is Zyna, and I am a Sunderland Year 10 student. This is my first-time writing, as I’ve only recently joined The Student Voice. I came to ACG last year and have had a great experience here; since I've received a wonderful education and made a lot of new friends. Year 10 has been fantastic so far; however, it is really different from year 9. Year 10 necessitates a lot of notetaking, and science particularly is a lot more stressful, because there is so much more knowledge to absorb. Year 10 is a lot more hectic, but personally, I think that’s excellent since it prepares us for IGCSE. Year 10 also requires more test preparation, in comparison to year 9. Cycle tests are much more difficult, and you must revise more than you did in year 9. Finally, year 10 also entails a significant increase in duties and workload, teachers have much higher expectations of us, and are less lenient when marking. So far, I have really enjoyed year 10, and am looking forward to the rest of the year; learning new things; and spending time with my friends.
