ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term Two, Week Nine, 1 July 2022
Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, At the conclusion of Term Two 2022, I wish to acknowledge at the outset, just what a challenge this term has been for everyone. I think we all thought that, as the Government concluded its policy on lockdowns, that everything would go back to normal. However, the Omicron variant of COVID has changed the landscape completely, with over a million New Zealanders contracting Omicron already this year, and many staff, students and parents of Sunderland have been affected by this variant, too. I would say that every family at school has been affected, putting pressure on even the most basic of family functions. As you know, my family has not been immune to these challenges either, and so we have witnessed first-hand what everyone globally is dealing with. Given the pandemic swirling around Auckland, I have just been so very impressed with how the staff and students have simply ‘just got on with it’ and navigated around the challenges facing them.
Please be mindful when dropping off and collecting children that neighbouring businesses carparks are NOT to be used by ACG Sunderland parents. Please also ensure that children are walking along the footpaths and not walking through the carparks. This is a safety concern for us here at ACG Sunderland and the local business owners.

At times, we went back to hybrid lessons because students either were isolating at home or had actually contracted the virus. Therefore, to complete an examination cycle during this term, with very little disruption, was amazing really, with our wonderful students not missing a beat during this important ACG Sunderland function. Therefore, we were able to fully report to all parents an accurate performance of each and every student. Not only has the academic functionality of the school continued without a change in course, so too have all the other pillars of our school. Sports, Music, Leadership and Service. On Saturday night, our Senior School Ball will take place at a new venue – Markovina Estate. This is an opportunity for our seniors to relax, let their hair down (luckily for some) and take a breather. The school holidays are upon us and in both assemblies this week I have reminded students and staff that a real break is required. I accept that seniors will need to spend at least one week preparing for the upcoming mock examinations. However, it is important to refresh the batteries and take a break. Our Term Two Fundraiser for What’s UP raised $3402.60. Well done to all those who contributed and arranged the fundraising activities. Have a wonderful holiday everyone, and I look forward to welcoming you all back in Term Three with another thirty-two new students.
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Under 2’s Room We have a bigger climbing box in our Under 2s' playground!
Junior Room This week's learning focus for the Junior Room children is fine motor skill development. Using finger paint to explore textures and colours, children are encouraged to dot, spread and mix the paint with their hands.
The movement of their fingers and hands develops strong fine motor muscles, needed for great pencil grip for writing skills - all while having fun exploring and getting messy!

Senior Room It was another fun week with our tamariki in the Senior room, busily exploring all the activities available indoors and outdoors. The children enjoyed working together in building towers, garages, and different models of transportation in the construction area. They love painting activities and demonstrated their creative ideas in drawings and when using props and dress-ups in the family corner.
It is exciting to see one of our children is moving on into the Primary school for the next term and we wish Alyssa all the best in her learning journey and in the future.

Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey The Duke of Edinburgh Hilary Award is available to students Year 10 and above here at ACG Sunderland as well as in other schools around the country and even around the world. Many students here are still working through their physical recreation, skill, and voluntary service hours, but over the past month a group of students from Year 10 who are aiming for their bronze award have spent time training and walking two tramps to achieve the ‘Adventurous Journey’ section of their awards. On 29th May, 7 students from Sunderland went to the AWL (Adventure Works) Base in Avondale to learn the essential skills that they would require on their tramps. This included learning how to make an NDS (Navigational Data Sheet), reading maps and contour lines (something that our students had a head start in thanks to Social Science classes) and going over the rules for when we are on our tramp. The few hours passed quickly and by the end of it, we were armed with the knowledge we would need on our practice journey. A week later, on 4th June, those same students met at the ferry terminal to catch a ferry to Rangitoto Island. The time we had before the ferry arrived was spent double checking we had all of the equipment we needed for the trip as well as adjusting straps on our packs. The weather was a little dodgy and there were a couple of light showers before we made it to the lava caves near the summit of the island. It started raining again near the summit and started pouring once we had made it down to the road onto Motutapu Island. Our spirits had been dampened – just like everything else – with the one thing on our mind being how long it would take to get to the camp site. After what felt like a century we were at Home Bay and immediately started pitching camp. Luckily, a break in the torrential rain meant we could set up our tents, so the inside stayed dry, and eat dinner without getting drenched. Everyone changed into some warm clothes and thermals that hadn’t been completely soaked thanks to our pack liners and drybags, and we rushed through dinner to get some rest. Unfortunately, some of the team-members’ tents leaked, and they woke up in a puddle of water, but the few hours of sleep we did get were much needed. The following day we were on the home stretch, moods were much better, lunch was genuinely enjoyed, and the weather decided to be kind as it didn’t rain much on the way back. 9

Two weeks after we had completed our practice journey, we were back at the AWL Base to set off on our final journey which would determine if we passed or failed this section of our award. This time with 11 students from Sunderland, everyone was there at 7:30 am to check equipment before hopping into a van to drive to the Pinnacles. The weather was a little miserable and cold, but we started the walk with high hopes and expectations for our performance. Compared to the practice journey, the Pinnacles was a steep walk with multiple stairs and sharp inclines to overcome, however not as lengthy as the RangitotoMotutapu walk. Our navigation was tested, as was our fitness, but we joked around and talked the whole way up to the hut keeping spirits high the entire time. Just because we were feeling better than in the practice, did not mean we weren’t as excited when we finally reached the hut we were staying in. Everyone got changed into thermals and warm clothes and the entire group chatted and played games until dinner. The second day back was very enjoyable even though everyone really wanted to be home. We descended on a steep track called ‘The Billy Goat Track,’ and it was named that for good reason; the path was steep, slippery and treacherous, and essentially followed a creek down the whole way, with flowing water, loose rocks and clay. Unlike the first day, the weather was beautiful; blue skies and sun rather than the misty, drizzling and overcast skies we had experienced the first day. The journey from the hut involved a river crossing near the end, that in my opinion, was one of the most engaging parts of the adventure. Now, those Year 10 students are focusing on filling in their hours for the remaining sections of their award. Overall, it was a really great experience that I’m glad to have taken part in and will remember for many years to come. For any inquiries about the Duke of Edinburgh Award, contact Mrs King. You can join at any time!

Cost of Living is Soaring! Ever noticed how much money you’re spending now compared to before the pandemic? It has probably increased. Since the pandemic started, the prices of everything have been booming. Let me tell you why. Let’s start with groceries. Have you visited the supermarket recently and noticed you or your parents pouring extra money out of your pockets to pay for things like fruit and vegetables, pantry items, proteins etc? Each and every item has escalated in price. Even worse, all these foods are within our daily use. Think about the number of things you can buy for $100, not much. Most supermarket trips end up amounting to over $200 for many families; this sum weekly simply isn’t possible for some families with minimum wage incomes. Fuel. The way we transport ourselves. This is one that everyone probably knows about. The prices are bonkers. Basically doubled. Everyone thinks twice before moving out of their driveway with their car, is it worth going? Is there an alternative mode of transport we could use? You may notice there are not as many cars on the road because people are struggling to take their car to work because of fuel prices. On the other hand, everyone is thinking about switching to an EV, however, the question is affordability. Even though the government offers a clean car rebate, EVs are still expensive. Nonetheless, there are still many more electric cars than before, since some fortunate people can afford to invest in such vehicles. The reason of increase in fuel prices is because of the Russia and Ukraine war. Russia had large exports in crude oil and without them doing any exports, fuel companies in NZ and the world have to rely on other countries oil, resulting in price surge. Finally, construction cost has incredibly jumped up as there are supply chain issues of construction material. The price has been increased up to 40-50%! Skill shortage resulted in delay is driving more cost towards any construction in the country. Shortage of material, especially gib board, is setting back many construction projects and the building industry is losing money. Because of this increase in construction prices, house prices are also ramping up. Last year in the months August to December there was a hike in house prices, and they increased by 30%! Since then, things have dialled down, and they are not as expensive as before. But still, not many people can afford houses at the moment. In conclusion; inflation. This is definitely a problem here in NZ as well as other countries. There is nothing you alone as a person can do to solve this, but there are ways to reduce the amount of money you spend; such as rethinking before you purchase something. Do you really need this? It would be beneficial for you to only buy things that you need in order to save as much as money as possible. I hope you enjoyed reading this article and maybe you learned a thing or two.

Senior Ball If you didn’t already know, our school ball is next weekend. As a senior student, this is very exciting! Ever since Year 9, I would hear older students discussing what to wear to the ball, what colour to paint their nails, and so many other ways to dress up that I had always wanted to take part in! Now that I am finally old enough, it is almost bittersweet. I have waited years to be able to go to the ball, but now I realise how it might also be my last time to participate in such an event. I am glad to have been able to work alongside a group of really sweet girls in our school’s Ball Committee. Ever since last year, when I first joined this committee, we had been planning and organising fundraisers for this very ball. Our fundraisers ranged from selling heart-shaped notes on Valentines’ Day to origami Easter bunnies, and our personal favourite: bake sales! Surprisingly, my design of the poster and tickets was fortuitously chosen in this year’s competition, meaning I got a free ticket to the ball! I must admit, the prize is quite generous, but I’m not going to complain… I am certain that many of the senior students have been stressed or are currently anxious about our exams. Our efforts in academics have been built up over the years and are finally reaching the end of our high-school journey. In this case, the Ball serves as an imposing opportunity to take a mental break from our studies, and a chance to spend more time with our classmates. After all these preparations, it is finally time to attend to the event. Our conversations no longer surrounded by the stressful planning of fundraisers, and instead have moved onto the reality of the Ball actually happening. Now, it is ultimately my turn to chat about my attire in front of the younger students! Overall, the Ball is a very special event for the senior students in our school, and I hope to see more students attending it next year.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S). What is our Mission statement? To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community. To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination. How to get involved or get your badge? We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service. Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate.
