WINGS NEWSLETTER

Vol 16, Term Four, Week Four, 6 November 2020

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland Our Lower College and Upper Primary students will have started to receive their internal examination results this week, with perhaps a few more to come back early next week. Anecdotally, most students have done very well – even with lockdowns and all the interruptions during the year. This just indicates how resilient and adaptable our young people are or have become. As always, there will be some disappointments where students have perhaps under-achieved. These young people will need support and reassurance that in most cases this was just a single slip up, and we can all just move on. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the school if you feel the staff can assist further in supporting your child during this time.

With so many activities having been cancelled this year due to Covid 19 it will be lovely to celebrate some school functions coming up over the new few weeks – culminating in our Prizegiving held on December 4th. However, there are a number of key functions before then. The first of those were the two Transition meetings held on Thursday: One for the College and one for the Primary. If you missed that meeting and wish to have the PowerPoints used, please don’t hesitate to contact Sonya Eldridge who can certainly pass them on to you.

Primary Production tickets have been sent home with your children.

Our next big day will be the 17th of November when all our new students joining the next year come into school for a half day and join their new classes and meet teachers. We call this Orientation Day and I'm sure you all remember this. We are still going to run our annual Legacy Day when the Year Thirteens come back into school and host a fun day for all the Lower College – it is always such a wonderful day! This is taking place on November 27th. On Friday the 26th of November Mr Daniel O’Connor has a number of bands who will perform in the Auditorium that afternoon. This is an opportunity for the school to recognise and celebrate our music culture, particularly since we missed a proper Battle of the Bands. We have also decided to have a Picnic Day for the Primary school on December 1st here at school. More details to come, but it will be a fun day for all. The Parents and Friends committee invite new parents to this very relaxed group who meet on a monthly basis. The focus of the Parents and Friends committee is to welcome new parents to the school and support the school where appropriate by running a variety of functions. Please see Sonya Eldridge for more information.

Have a wonderful weekend and see you all next week.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

2020 Junior Final Exams. Year Eight Exams For most of us, Week Four would have been one of the most stressful times of the year: Exam Week. For my year level, we had nine exams, all different subjects! These included: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Art, Technology, Spanish, Physical Education and Music. They took place from Tuesday to Thursday, so all the time in-between was used for studying. As we had Labour Day before the exams began, everyone was working to their full potential. The only texts I received from my friends were about exams, and believe me, that’s never happened before. I’ve seen study notes which were amazingly organised from a lot of people. This made me wonder about the amount of time and effort they had put in, which I greatly admired. Everyone seemed to be so prepared for the examinations

After the long anticipated exams were over, there was not a single person who didn’t appear relieved. We have however, got some of our exam results back already. I know that my class have both our Mathematics and Science results back as we have the same teacher for the two subjects (Credit to Mrs Menon for marking them so quickly, we call her the ‘Super-marker’) and most of us seem to be pleased with our results. Personally, I have made many carless mistakes, but I’ll just have to watch out for them next time. I cant wait to receive our other marks back too – I hope I did alright!!

Students Responses to Examinations Its been a rough time for the students here at ACG Sunderland for a few months now. After quite a long study break and two weeks of settling back in at school, the examinations were the only thing which was in everyone’s minds and so its been stressful for some students. Everyone has been doing their part and the teachers have been making sure that their students are prepared for what challenges they face. Mrs. Regine Menon, one of our hardworking teachers here at our school says, ‘I would say preparing my students for the examinations was not very stressful at all because I have the knowledge and know how, to do it from experience.’ Nonetheless, students had plenty of time to revise. The examinations took place in week three for the Lower College which includes the years: Seven, Eight and Nine. They were successfully completed on the Thursday of week three. Most students were thankful that the examinations were finally over and personally, I also felt the same way as the student body. I was relieved that the examinations were finally over and done with and I shared this happiness with my friends. Since examinations are now over, we don’t have cycle tests every week and it meant my friends and I could now make plans and spend more time with each other since there’s no huge events coming up for now.

My First Examinations in ACG Sunderland During the holidays, I studied extremely hard every single day and after school. However, I never expected that time would go so fast, just like a blink of the eye. My very first examination subject was Mathematics. I was very nervous, even though I studied very hard! So I decided to just believe in myself. I was very worried about making mistakes in the examinations since I have already made many mistakes before. It felt like time went even faster while I was in the examinations. Everyone was silent while the teacher was walking around us. I felt like my heartbeat was breaking the silence of the quiet classroom when I was stuck on one question. The quiet classroom made my heartbeat faster, enough to hear the little ant crawl. I decided to move on and come back to the questions after I had completed the other questions and luckily, I had enough time to solve the question I was stuck on. I finished my exam’s in time and I believe I did well. Next time, I am going to try not to get stuck on difficult questions and save my time while I’m solving my questions. It was a great experience in my opinion considering I’ve only been at ACG Sunderland since last term!
