WINGS NEWSLETTER Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland
Vol 16, Term Four, Week Three, 30 October 2020
I hope like me, everyone enjoyed the long weekend. Wasn’t the weather fantastic! All the sunshine and lovely temperatures are certainly not helping the Auckland draught situation unfortunately. Fingers crossed we get some rain again soon. It felt like almost the entire school was sitting examinations this week, with the Upper Primary, Lower College and the Seniors all sitting their respective exams. The Seniors do continue over the next four weeks with the Lower College and Upper Primary all finished on Friday – a relief for them that the assessments are now complete. This Friday night is the Annual Halloween Primary Disco and I know the Parents and Friends Committee and Associate Leaders are hosting our little folk for their disco. There will be a lot of happy/sweaty young children at the conclusion of the night. A special thank you to the five staff who will also support on the night. This week I had the opportunity to visit a number of the Lower Primary classes – always one of my highlights. All the children were engaged with their learning and having fun in the process. Well done to our newest class – 1DS. They have all made a wonderful transition into primary education and Mrs Debbie Sangprong is doing a superb job with these young learners.
Primary Halloween Disco will be hosted this Friday!

On Wednesday our Year Three and Four students went to the Aotea Centre to see the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra perform on stage! This was also incorporated with drama skits showing heroic New Zealanders such as; Jean Batten who made the first ever solo flight from England to New Zealand in 1936; Nancy Wake, who joined the French Resistance and the British Special Operations Executive during World War Two, and Ruia Morrison, the first New Zealand Woman and the first Maori person to play at Wimbledon and reach the quarterfinals. Our students were captivated by such a performance and had an amazing time.

My Best Tips for Exam’s Alright, exams. It’s all the buzz. You're going to do well if you try your best. I can relate to how fast the anticipation grows inside and your heartbeat is off at the very minute you enter the exam rooms. Nerves are my worst enemy, from simple stuttering to the world's worst blackouts. I’ve got it all. You might not have the worst of it but exams are a big time pressure and sometimes pressure crushes your brain to mush. So, if you're feeling like that before your exams or just standing outside the door of yours, here are some tips to remember;
Pep talks Talking to yourself in the mirror or writing to yourself can help. In other words, exams are a good time to focus on you, since really that’s exactly what exams are about. They are to track your progress to see what steps next and hoping that your grades are good enough to fulfil your desires In other words, this is about you. Exams are about your future and you're doing this for you .
Eat right Now, this may be obvious to some people but not all. Do not drastically change your diet before or during the week of exams. This includes not taking large amounts of caffeine or sugar. These make you even more jittery and can potentially affect your grades! Even if in a small way it makes a difference. Also drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated keeps you awake so you’ll be less distracted making the most of all the time you got!
Study, and breathe If you have a conscious breathing, you will notice things come into memory easily. If you’re stressed during an exam you create a wall for your memory resulting in not being able to recall things. You might’ve experienced this as soon as your exam is over. You’re walking out and suddenly you know the answer to a question you were stuck on. This is because of the big sweeping relief that washes over you when an exam is finished, relaxing you, crumbling that wall down into a pile of bricks allowing you to remember. So just sit back and relax until you're ready to be the best version of you. I really hope that my exam tips help you and for those you are nearly finished with your exams, we’re nearly there so we’ve got this! Seniors, who are continuing with their Cambridge examinations, good luck!!

Year Seven English
ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland
Year Seven English classes have been studying poetry and this week the students had a chance to write their own stanzas for a new version of ‘The Sound of Music’ song ‘My Favourite Things’. Here’s a couple of examples: Cute little cuddles and playable poodles, Eating some dumpling and sucking some noodles, Re-aging Christ the lord and the King, These are a few of my favourite things!
Cute little cats, an adorable puppy, Candy aesthetics and saving my money, Winning netball games and when the bell rings, These are a few of my favourite things. (Alyssa – 7B)
Gigantious giraffes and fabulous flowers, Bits of old pieces and old rubbish mowers, Listen to me and I’ll tell you the spring, These are a few of my favourite things! Springing spring onions and flexible fleas, Dancing and prancing and kneel-ing knees, Every-bo-dy likes to ju-ump and sing, These are few of my favourite things! (Ethan – 7C)
Students who listen and follow instruction, Meeting new people and alien abduction, All of the great gifts that Santa Claus brings, There are a few of my favourite things.
Sitting by the fire, reading a book Then I look over and have one look Marshmallows and chocolate while Christmas bells ring These are a few of my favourite things. (Juno – 7C)
When lockdown starts, when students cough, When I’m feeling sick, I simply remember my favourite things, And then I don’t feel so sad. (Ms Tyler)
Spring days and cold days and times when I’m sleeping, Waking up early when hours are not leaping, Children and laughter and playgrounds with swings, These are a few of my favourite things. (Mrs King) 5
