ACG SUNDERLAND WINGS NEWSLETTER

Vol 18, Term Four, Week Two, 21 October 2022

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland,

It’s the end of Week Two and we are heading into a long weekend. This will be an opportunity for the Cambridge students, Lower College and Upper Primary to have an extended period to do some extra study/revision before next week.

The internal exams begin on Tuesday and run for the entire week. Students and parents should expect results to begin to be released in week four. I know the students have been preparing well for the assessments and I personally wish them all the very best.

The Cambridge students continue their examination journey, with the final exams taking place on November 17th. Again, I wish all our seniors all the very best as they navigate their journey too.

On Tuesday, we presented a number of students with Distinction certificates for the Australian Mathematics competitions. Ms Ngoh explained to me that over 250,000 students sit these tests each year, so I was very pleased with the number of students from ACG Sunderland who were recognised.

I wish to highlight two students in particular. Tomas Zou from Year Seven got a High Distinction, making him a top 5% candidate. From Year Ten, Ethan Fung's result actually placed him the top 1% in the competition. Special congratulations to those two students!

I know our little Year Three’s will be really looking forward to their annual overnight camp at Kelly Tarlton's. It is always a very special event for them and an event which, for the last two years, our students have missed out on due to Covid. So 2022 is even more special I know there will be wonderful photos for the newsletter next week.

For those of you who have some Learners Support in the Primary School, you will be aware that Jan Drummond has now returned from her extreme time away from school due to a serios injury. She is starting back for a few hours a day so you will see her around.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Have a wonderful long weekend everyone

Early Learning School

Under 2’s Room

This week, we are celebrating Diwali. We decorated diyas, coloured rangoli, and made Diwali cards. We applied henna mehndi to our arms and feet!

Junior Room

This week, the children of the Junior Room have also been immersed in the learning and celebration of the Indian festival Diwali. We have been fortunate to have lovely parents to come in and share their knowledge of Diwali with the children. The children have experienced how to make and decorate their own Diyas, a clay candle holder, have Henna designs on their hands or feet and make their own delicious Coconut Laddu to share with each other. We wish you all a prosperous Diwali!

Early Learning School

Senior Room

Our week was full of celebration together with our children and their families. We provided lots of opportunities for the children to learn about the festival, and the meaning and importance of Diwali celebration.

Next week is Diwali festival and the preschool children are very excited to celebrate the Indian festival of lights. On this occasion, children decorated the Diya's (candle holder), made the Lantern, made the Rangoli pattern and watched the Diwali festival story. Children also made the Indian sweet the coconut Laddu.

Orchestra

The Primary Orchestra is getting ready for their first performance. They will be playing during all the performances of the Primary Performing Arts Showcase during Week Five. That’s both Lower and Upper Primary performances, and both the matinees and evening performances. That’s a lot of playing!

Mr. O’Connor is very pleased at the progress the orchestra has been making. He aims to make the orchestra an important part of the Primary Prize Giving Ceremony as well.

As there is so much music to get through, orchestra will be starting their rehearsals at the start of Period 5 this term. So their rehearsal will go from 12.10 to 1.15 giving them much more time to rehearse all their pieces.

Friendship Bench

The Friendship Bench is a new initiative here at ACG Sunderland. This has been in the making for some time. The Friendship Bench is a tool for positive mental and emotional health used in various settings. At ACG Sunderland the Friendship Bench may also be known as a buddy bench and is a special place in our playground where a child can go when they want someone to talk to. This Friendship Bench is distinctively different from other seating in the playground and may was specially designed by Write On Signs. Our bench is situated in an open and well travelled area of the school so that any child using the bench will be noticed quickly

When a student feels the need for a friend to talk to, he or she can show this by using the friendship bench. Other children and staff will recognise this as a sign that some help, support or comfort is needed and will come to talk with the child.

The friendship bench is a means by which a child can seek support without the need to rationalise their feelings or to seek out a particular member of staff or special friend. Because the bench is in the day to day environment of the school it can be used at any break time and for any reason from seemingly trivial matters to more serious concerns and encourages children to ask for help when they are troubled.

We are very excited to have our special bench and think it looks terrific too. We look forward to supporting all the children who may use it.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland

Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S).

What is our Mission statement?

To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community.

To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination.

How to get involved or get your badge?

We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service.

Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate. Below is the information for the badges:
