ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term Four, Week Two, 22 October 2021

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, You will have received an email from me earlier this week outlining a proposed testing week next week for Years 0-10. This is not at all an examination cycle but just a data collection process for students and staff. Staff have begun the report writing process and these will be available for all year groups at the end of the year. The Government announced on Wednesday that Senior students from NCEA schools would return next Tuesday, ready to sit their exams at the end of this academic year. To be clear, this change does not affect our strategy for our Cambridge exams and our students will continue to sit their assessments at school as they have done for the past two weeks. To date, the process has been extremely smooth, and I wish to acknowledge Mr Stephens' work and organisation to make this process so positive.

VIRTUAL OPEN DAY – 30 OCTOBER 2021 10.30am

ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

The one change the Governments policy has generated is that our tutorials may now be able to take place face-to-face. There will be documentation circulated about these tutorials very soon. At this stage, we do not have a recommencement date for our students in Years 010. Potentially, this date may be announced next Tuesday. With the rhetoric from last week, it may be early in December? As soon as I hear any news, I will be informing the community. In the short to medium term, please prepare your children to continue receiving online lessons for at least the next few weeks. I know this is a challenging time for everyone, but in general, the process has been very successful. I do hope you all enjoy this upcoming long weekend and I look forward to catching up very soon.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Nathan Villars Campus Principal ACG Sunderland

Value for the next week is: Compassion Sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others.

Preschool Online Learning Over the years, gardening has always been one of Preschool's favourite activities and Spring is the best time to do it. Preschool children are well-known in ACG school as someone who would bring in all sorts of interesting fruits and veggies!

While we enjoyed eating them, we have also saved seeds from our fruits and veggies. We have successfully sowed many different kinds of seeds in our garden bed as well as Primary school's garden beds and the little seedlings are doing really well. We would like to share our love for gardening with the wider school community.

Primary Online Learning 1CS went on a field trip on Friday to Ambury Farm. Don’t worry it was on Zoom with Miss Sealy as the camerawomen. The children loved going for a hike to find all the animals and watched Miss Sealy get licked by a cow and running away from the mean chickens. Good fun was had by all with lots of learning and fun during lockdown.

Checkpoint Exams For many students, this lockdown couldn’t have been timed worse. With mock exams for seniors and normal internal exams for the entire college coming soon, I know that many people have been very stressed, especially about the fact that some exams might even have to be cancelled. No matter if you’re a junior or senior, it’s been a time of uncertainty for all of us. As most of you know, every year, the year 9s and 6s sit the Cambridge Checkpoint exams. These are external examinations in math, science and English, and are sent to Sunderland from Cambridge, once completed, they are sent back to England for marking. I know that many of my classmates have been studying for these exams for a very long time and, as I’m writing this, I’m sure that at least a few are looking over old notes or doing practice exams or summarising notes. Personally, my favourite way to revise is to write things like math formulae and science notes in a book as its more convenient to read from the notebook than my books throughout year 7-9. Writing it down also makes it easier to remember the information. As lockdown was slowly nearing Checkpoint week, some of us realised that the exams might be in danger of being cancelled. A sentiment which received mixed reactions. Some of us were devastated that we might not be able to sit the exam we had studied so long for, others were ok with perhaps not sitting them, even relieved, as they are an enormous amount of pressure and stress. Despite the uncertainties – many of us continued to study and revise and now that the cases are going down again, we’ll probably be able to sit our exams. Giving us all a good use for this holiday in lockdown. By Anya Thurner – Year 9

ACG Sunderland Students Invoices As mentioned in January, we moved to a new finance system at the start of the year. The implementation has gone smoothly and we’d like to thank parents who have amended their reference when making payment by bank transfer to the Communication Ref No. A small number of parents have not recognised the noreply-jde@inspirededu.com address that the invoices have been sent from, or have found that the emails have gone direct to junk. If you can please check these points if information is not coming through and, as always, please contact Mandy Allen at mandy.allen@acgedu.com or 09 838 7070 if you have any accounts questions.

No Cheque payments from 22 June 2021 ACG Sunderland will not be accepting or issuing cheques from Tuesday 22 June 2021. Payments need to be made online or over the counter with Eftpos or Credit Cards (2% surcharge). Please note that both the café and reception cannot provide any cash-out services. 12

UBIQ has taken the decision to not proceed with second-hand buyback purchasing for the 2022 academic year. This is not a decision they have taken lightly as they feel it is a valuable service to provide to the students, and families attending ACG. However, in light of recent and ongoing outbreaks of the highly transmissible Delta variant of Covid-19 in the community and subsequent alert level changes, they strongly feel the need for ongoing caution and care. Even more so given the size of the campus we are based on, and recent cases that created exposure events on campus. For this reason, UBIQ are uncomfortable putting their staff, ACG students and their families in a position of risk. UBIQ sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this will cause and look forward to a safer 2022.
