WINGS NEWSLETTER Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland
Vol 16, Term Four, Week Two, 23 October 2020
We have now concluded our second week of Term Four and the second week of the Cambridge Examinations. At this early stage, I want to compliment the students on their focus and attitude as they are entering the exam sessions. Everyone would appear to be well prepared yet relaxed. May this continue. Mr Stephens and his team of invigilators are doing a great job of overseeing this process. Next week it is the turn of our Upper Primary and Lower College to take some examinations also. Again, I have been impressed with the attitude of our young scholars within class and in the library too. I'm sure the process will go well!
Between now and then, we have Labour Weekend, an opportunity for everyone to take stock – relax a little and use that extra day as efficiently as possible. For those of you who don’t know, a very famous New Zealander – Samuel Parnell, the architect of the eight-hour working day is recognized this weekend for developing the concept of eight hours work, eight hours sleep, and eight hours play. The concept has basically been rolled out across the world. Thank you, Samuel Parnell!

Last weekend, we hosted our last Open Day for the year here at ACG Sunderland and it was very successful. We had over thirty-five groups through the school and I interviewed a number of families on the day too. A huge thank you to the teaching staff and student guides who all made this day operate so very well. It was not our plan to have an Open Day during Term Four but due to Covid this was forced upon us and in the end it was very worthwhile.
Have a wonderful long weekend and I look forward to catching up next Tuesday.
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Note from the Editor Amelia Lee from year 8, who is a very talented writer, watched an education documentary about Social Media during the holidays. She wanted to share how students were being affected by social media at school.
The Social Dilemma What is better than curling up on the sofa on a Friday evening to watch a family movie? It hits pretty high on my list of favourite things. This week’s movie choice was The Social Dilemma, an educational documentary about how social media is influencing our lives, and it got me thinking that it affects us at home, at work and at school. So how exactly does it affect us at school? There are clubs that heavily rely on social media platforms. Not only that - how are we spending our lunchtime? Just take a moment to look up from your phone and open your eyes to what is happening around you. People filming TikTok (social networking service to share videos), scrolling through Instagram feeds, messaging their friends, and playing video games. Sure, not everyone spends their Lunch times like this, but we’ve all been guilty of it at least once. Secondly, our social skills. Texting - it’s convenient, but this has massive consequences on how we interact. What happened to phone calls and conversations? All gone. We only text with acronyms and one-word answers. Finally, social media platforms. Who here mindlessly scrolls through Instagram or Facebook when they’re bored? Once you start, you just can’t stop. It monitors everything, from what you look at to how long you look at it. It strategically arranges your feed into what will hold your attention for the longest time. It reads your mind. Whatever you click on is added to its huge knowledge of your dislikes and likes, your interests and disinterests.
So, this is a wake-up call. Open your eyes, look at the beautiful planet we live in. We are already being controlled by AI. We are slowly marching to our destruction, and the only thing that will save us, is if you stop scrolling. Written by Amelia Lee (year 8)

Organising my Studies during the Holidays (Written over the holidays) Next term, we have the exams coming up and this holiday is the best chance to prepare and revise for the exams. I studied very hard for the exams and this is how I organised my studies. Firstly, I made a timetable for myself. I did not put which subject is done in this hour, but I’ve calculated the days I can revise and prepare for the exams. I also wrote down the subjects that I am mostly focusing on even though I am preparing for all the subjects. I’ve set a goal for my exams, which is the first thing I always do. I try my best to achieve my goals every time and set another goal if I achieved them. Sticky note separators are very useful for studying for exams. I stuck all the sticky note separators in the chapters in my subject books that I need to study and revise. I find these very useful, but if you don’t have a sticky note separator, I recommend using masking tape or washi tape. Also using highlighters gave me big help! Highlight the sentences or the words that you find hard or important! It is very useful and you can straight away find the sentences you highlighted before! Good luck to everyone who has exams.

Final Exam Preparation Everyone in our school has been working extremely hard for the upcoming final exams, which will be taking place this term. With all the events and changes that have taken place this year, how have students coped with revising for exams, especially during a time like this?
The importance of the exams is well understood, and they are taken seriously here at ACG Sunderland. All students study and work very hard for what the exams have prepared for us. As a student myself, it has always been quite difficult for me to stay focused and study. I always knew how important the exams were, and I used to get over-whelmed about it, and super stressed out. It was very unhealthy. I know it’s like that way too for other students, and there are some others who don’t over-think about the exams. "I don’t think that revision is much harder now, as not only are we still mostly at home, but in a more relaxed way. There is no more lockdown so we don’t need to stress about that anymore and can focus on revising." – Jessie Wu (year 8) Considering the circumstances and all the madness that has occurred this year, it’s understandable that students would still be having a rather difficult time with preparing for the exams. Be that as it may, don’t forget to stay safe!

Norwest Foodbank This term, the Student Leadership Team is supporting the Norwest Foodbank. The Norwest Foodbank works to ensure that everyone in our community can enjoy their holiday with a Christmas meal. We would like to offer families the opportunity to sponsor an ornament as a donation for the charity. The ornaments vary in colour depending on the amount of money donated. Forms for ornaments sponsorship are given to the students and are also available at reception. Please fill out the form and return to reception. We are also accepting donations of non-perishable food items which can be placed in the boxes of each house near the reception area. Please give generously to this worthy cause.
Thank you so much for your support.
