ACG Sunderland Newsletter - 23 September 2022

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland,

It is hard to believe it’s the end of Term Three already! Another nine week term has sped past, and we find ourselves at the start of a well-deserved two-week break.

For the Primary (Years 5&6) and the Lower College, the students have examinations in Week Three of next term, and so some preparations over the break is probably sensible. However, I really do wish everyone a well deserved break.

The Senior College, on the other hand, have just completed their mock examinations, and beginning on October 10th next term, the students will begin their high stakes Cambridge Examinations. In fact, the AS Chemistry practical is being held over the holiday break.

Our Checkpoint Examinations also begin next term, in Week One. These are medium-stake tests that our Year Nine and Six take giving students and parents wonderful feedback on how their children are currently progressing. We all wish our Cambridge Students the very best as they engage with this phase of their academic year.

ACG WINGSSUNDERLANDNEWSLETTERVol18,TermThree,WeekNine,23September2022 Children’s lunches need to be ordered online by 8.30am via our website or this link: https://www.lunchorders.co.nz/

Last year, even with COVID, the students produced some wonderful results and I’m assuming this cohort of students will generate similar results.

On Tuesday, our Upper Primary competed in their swimming carnival, held again at West Wave in Henderson. This was a magical event with excellent participation from almost 100% of the children.

It was a highly organised event with all the staff working hard to make the event enjoyable and successful for everyone. I wish to especially thank Mr Sam Baker for overseeing and organising the event.

A special congratulations to the students this year who won the staff vs student race.

I wish to thank everyone, staff, student,s and parents for making Term Three so very successful. I wish to particularly highlight Mr Jules Robson, our new Deputy Principal. Jules has fitted in wonderfully well and contributed significantly to the very smooth running of the school this term

Stay safe everyone and we will see you next term.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

put a plank onto the climbing box to support our tamariki in practicing balance and gross motor skills.

The weather has been particularly sunny the past week, which has allowed for the children of the Junior Room to experiment with half pipes in the sandpit. How fast will the sand go if we pour it down on this angle? What will happen if we add water to the half pipe? Can we put a toy car on the half pipe? Will it go fast or slow? Many questions for the children to think critically about their learning

The Senior Room is learning the letter sound ‘l’ this week, and the children are enjoying the creative activities to reinforce this letter sound. We also had three Primary School teachers visiting us last week, and they shared ideas and some expectations in the classrooms. One of the expectations is encouraging children to tie their shoelaces independently for their health and safety.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland

Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S).

What is our Mission statement?

To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community. To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination.

How to get involved or get your badge?

We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service.

Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate. Below is the information for the badges:
