ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 15, Term Three, Week One, 24 July 2020

Dear ACG Sunderland Community This has been the first week of what is expected to be the first ‘normal’ term of the year and hopefully one in which we can focus back on teaching and learning in the classroom and also enjoy the wide range of other activities that go on at Sunderland. You only have to take a glance at a news bulletin to see how lucky we are being here in New Zealand and able to have a relatively normal life. The situation in many countries due to the impact of Covid-19 is very different. Our term started with some very sad news and leads me to be writing this week’s Newsletter rather than Mr Villars. We received the news on Monday morning that Mr Villars’ father had unexpectedly passed away. Our thoughts are with the whole Villars family at this difficult time. Over the holidays a large number of tutorials took place for the senior students here at Sunderland and I would like to thank all of those staff who gave up their time to come in and run these sessions to support our students. Building work also continued during the holiday time on our new café which is starting to take shape. The café structure is now in place and the floors have all been redone. The built in seating will be installed over a weekend later in the term and we hope to have the facility up and running for Term Four. The pictures on this page give you an idea of the progress made.

Open Evening Thursday 30 July from 6.30pm to 8.30pm

ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

At the Primary and College assemblies on Monday we got to welcome a group of new students to our Sunderland family. Nine new students joined the primary school and five in the college. In walking around the campus this week these new students seem to be settling in quickly and current students are doing a great job acting as buddies to support them. We do have an open evening next Thursday evening where more families will be able to have a look around our campus, talk to student guides and staff and perhaps make the decision to enrol in the school. If anyone has family or friends who have any interest in the school do pass on the information about next Thursday evening and encourage them to come along. As I write this article our Physical Education staff are busy putting the final preparations together for our Cross Country event which we finish this week off with. I’d like to thank in advance Phil Keen who does a fantastic job putting this event together and also the rest of our physical education staff, teaching staff and student leaders who all do a huge amount to make this a fun afternoon for the students. With some great young athletes in the school now, I look forward to see if some of the school records can be broken. At the end of next week our first full academic reports for the year will go home to all students and the following week on Tuesday and Wednesday late afternoon/evening our parent teacher interviews will take place. Bookings for these interviews will be available through myacg and the system should be available by next Wednesday. An email will be sent to all parents with further instructions once the system is available for bookings to start. The reports will also be available through myacg next Friday evening so if a student is absent from school when reports are handed out, parents can still access the document online. Any problems accessing myacg our wonderful administrative staff will be able to assist you to resolve this, so please get in touch if this is the case for you. During next week our Year Five students will be heading off on a three day outdoor education activity at Lakewood Camp. I am sure they will have a great experience down there. As the term goes on we have a significant number of other events occurring including our school movie night, options evening, a senior music performance evening, upper college examinations, a primary production, the college ball, parents and friends primary and college breakfasts, the primary talent quest and finally the Battle of the Bands. More details about these events will be sent out in due course but there is certainly plenty to look forward to this term. I look forward to catching up with many of you over the course of the term at the events occurring. Have a great weekend.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.
