ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term Two, Week Eight, 23 June 2022

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, It's another short week this week as we celebrate Matariki for the very first time with a public holiday. Matariki is the Māori name for the Pleiades Star cluster and the beginning of Māori Lunar Calendar. As highly visible heliacal stars, the Pleiades are among the most important celestial body, after the moon. The Pleiades heliacal rising is widely recognised as the beginning of the new year and then of agricultural season. The Māori also recognise Matariki as the beginning of their new year. This year, Matariki falls near the Winter Solstice (the longest night and shortest day) and therefore, we are starting our journey back to summer again.

Please be mindful when dropping off and collecting children that neighbouring businesses carparks are NOT to be used by ACG Sunderland parents. Please also ensure that children are walking along the footpaths and not walking through the carparks. This is a safety concern for us here at ACG Sunderland and the local business owners.

However, when we woke this morning, and the outdoor temperature is less than 5°C, it does seem like a long way back to the balmy evenings and barbeques. Anyway, enjoy your long weekend and recognitions of Matariki. Last weekend, Nikko Kelly raced at the National Secondary School Cross Country Championships held in Nelson. This is where the best of the best race off for the title of National Champ. Young Nikko did incredibly well, gaining fifth place in his year group and was only two seconds off third place. A huge congrats to Nikko. On Tuesday, Mrs Butler took our Primary Chess aces out to the West Auckland Chess Champs and our team did very well, securing a second and third placing. On Thursday afternoon, the entire College was entertained by our annual Battle of the Bands, where nine of our school bands performed some of their own music and some covers as well. This year was again a wonderful display of musical talent. The judges' final decisions will be published next term. Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Junior Room The Preschool Junior Room children have been busy celebrating Matariki this week. They have sung a new waiata, "Tirama Tirama" with the actions, learning the names of the Matariki stars. The children have made their own Matariki stars with plenty of bright sparkles, just like the stars in the night sky!

Senior Room It was another exciting busy week with our tamariki, supporting them to express their feelings appropriately by modelling simple words or sentences, respecting each other in decision-making, and developing their sense of responsibility and of belonging in our group.

Children enjoyed many Matariki related activities like making kites, reading Matariki star stories, singing songs, playdough and drawing stars. The children enjoyed their time outdoors, taking part in physical activities and exploring the environment.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S). What is our Mission statement? To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community. To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination. How to get involved or get your badge? We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service. Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate. Below is the information for the badges:
