WINGS NEWSLETTER

Vol 17, Term Three, Week Nine, 24 September 2021

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, By the time you read this newsletter, your children, our students, will have begun their school holidays at the conclusion of a very challenging term. We have been locked down for six weeks of a nine-week term. This is the longest ever lockdown of teaching and learning time over this Covid-19 period, and we are still waiting for the review taking place on the 6 October. That will be critical with regards to our upcoming Cambridge examinations. I did send out a separate communication regarding the exams yesterday. We know that the children are tired; the continued online engagement generates fatigue for teachers and students alike, and some time away from the screens is going to be essential for everyone. Can I suggest, as we move into some more settled Spring weather, that all our students spend some time outside, doing some exercise and relaxing. With Auckland still in Level 3, there is no organised sport currently but I’m confident that the summer sport programmes will kick off as soon as we reach Level 2. Basketball, Touch Rugby, Cricket will all begin very soon. Senior Students will continue to prepare for the upcoming Cambridge exams beginning on the 7 October. Once we get to Level 2, a tutorial programme will be published which includes the last 3 days of the holiday period and continues through Term 4.

OPEN DAY – 30 OCTOBER 2021 10.30am – 2.30pm

ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

I wish to congratulate our Senior Students again on how they all conducted themselves with regard to the online examinations held in weeks 7 & 8. This was a new skill set for everyone involved and they really did a fantastic job. The results generated and the process undertaken will be important as we head into Term 4 and students will now have their results. Parents, please note that the final reports for these students will be distributed with the rest of the campus on 7 December. You will all be aware we have had to make the decision to cancel the school camps for the second year in a row. I appreciated all your emails of support with this decision. Many of you will know that sports and outdoor education are pillars to my educational philosophy and therefore cancelling the activities was not easy. However, it is the right decision in these uncertain times. May you be safe over this holiday break and be assured I will touch base as soon as we get clarification from the Government.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Value for the First Week in Term 4 is: Teamwork The combined action of a group, especially when effective and efficient..

Preschool Online Learning This week in our group time we made the model of a volcano. Mason read us his book on volcanoes . Volcanoes have many different shapes and sizes, some look like steep mountains , others look like bumps and some are flat with a hole in the centre that is often filled with water. The shape of the volcano and how explosively it erupts depend largely on how “sticky” and how “fizzy” (how much gas) the magma is that is erupted. A volcanic eruption works much the same way. Pressure builds up inside a volcano as gas bubbles form in magma. Magma is hot liquid rock beneath the surface of the Earth. Gas bubbles in the volcano need to escape. So the volcano erupts. Boom! A volcano is a mountain or hill with an opening. When a volcano erupts, magma is pushed up through the opening with great force. When magma reaches the Earth’s surface, it is called lava.

Due to our old age home visit being cancelled in Term 4 because of COVID, 1CS looked for an old age home that we could help out from our bubbles. We contacted Kenderdine Park Hospital + Home and organized to send the residents photos of pictures that we have made for them which the care home manager will be printing out and putting up in the passageways and in the living room to brighten the residents’ days. A lot of the residents are separated from their families and cannot see them at the moment and are very excited to see the children's pictures.

Colouring Competition – NZ Cancer Society Kia Ora, This term, ACG Sunderland is supporting the 'NZ Cancer Society' for our Term 3 charity. The Cancer Society of New Zealand is currently the leading non-government organisation dedicated to reducing the incidence and impact of cancer and ensuring cancer care for everyone in New Zealand. It is an independent charity. With recent Lockdowns, our fundraising events at school has been a challenge. Nonetheless, we have put in place a Colouring Competition for the students to do during the lockdown period. Students received an email from their House Leaders with a PDF File of the Colouring Sheet. Once we are back in school, they can submit their sheet at Reception with a simple gold coin donation. With this year's Street Appeal for Daffodil Day cancelled, donating through our school is the perfect opportunity for you to show your support! You may also directly donate to the NZ Cancer Society via this link below: https://www.daffodilday.org.nz/acgsunderland Thank you so much for your help, Stay Safe! A.R.M Haven As the shadow of night suffocated light from the setting sun, and the creatures of deep fell into their slumbers; aboard the Haven II nuclear submarine, within the sleeping cabins the roof lighting dimmed to zilch; as the navigation crew slid out their sleeping bags and the refugees rested in their allocated rooms. All was quiet. Everyone slept sound – but Albert. Twitching in his bunk, he pulled out his 6-inch IPS display device to check the detections of the onboard radar. He didn’t suspect much; due to the military build and quality of the ship he was content, that all invasive and unfriendly abnormalities, would’ve been neutralized by the intelligent engineers and pundits in the holds and top floor above. That is, if there were any, for, the current journey back from Yugoslavia was comfortably pleasant, having not suffered any Oblivion squad attacks or air raids. However, his expectations were opposed to reality. Clutching the scanner, Alberts’s face turned ghost pale and he fell onto the mattresses laid out for rest by others on the floor below him as he fainted. *** Far above the very scalp of Albert Hans’ trembling skull, the jet black espionage plane hovered around the approximate coordinates of the submerged submarine. In that one crucial moment, no one gave a care in the world – their fatal mistake; the world was about to be mortified by the plane pilot’s sinister invention. “Damion Five, do you copy?” “Yes sir. Activating the Devil’s Breath now.” “Graham, you have failed me beyond forgiveness on multiple occasions. I want this mission to be worth accepting repent. Do you understand?” “Yes sire. The disobedient to Cerberus will suffer for their sins!”

Startled and fearful, the lieutenant of the Haven rose from his slumber instantaneously. He tore himself out of his sleeping bag and slammed his palm into the Code Red button located on the communications dashboard. “Attention all! I have intercepted a transmission from unfriendlies stating an imminent assault on our craft! They have discovered our location, and dare I say, they will not be taking this opportunity lightly! All hands-on deck, full speed ahead, initiate hull fluid ejection, HFE, for a swift getaway! Naval personnel, to my-” A sudden trauma to the side of the glamourous vessel foundered it on its side, and as a result sent the lieutenant flying into the opposite wall with brute force, leaving him eternally speechless. Meanwhile, Albert woke from his unconsciousness and panicked. He shook the others awake and told them to grab gas masks from his backpack. “They’re launching the Devil’s Breath – and when it hits, you don’t want any of it in your nose or mouth!” And right at such a dire moment, it was lights out for the internals of the submarine. A scream, followed by another, echoed around Albert. Then all faded to silence. There was no one but a terrified Albert. Then a feeling of light-headedness seized him, and he was suspended in mid-air as he gazed at the floor. “Ahh, Riley Hammock, remember me?” A voice rasped suddenly behind his back. “Ah! Ch-ch-Cerberus?” “Indeed. Now let’s have a good chat over your…. indecisiveness and rebellious actions – at my place. Good night.” As the oral cavity of Cerberus enveloped Albert’s body’s entirety, the intellect wished he had the choice to change his history and go back in time to end his previous alliance with the despicable, nefarious, and wicked creature.

UBIQ has taken the decision to not proceed with second-hand buyback purchasing for the 2022 academic year. This is not a decision they have taken lightly as they feel it is a valuable service to provide to the students, and families attending ACG. However, in light of recent and ongoing outbreaks of the highly transmissible Delta variant of Covid-19 in the community and subsequent alert level changes, they strongly feel the need for ongoing caution and care. Even more so given the size of the campus we are based on, and recent cases that created exposure events on campus. For this reason, UBIQ are uncomfortable putting their staff, ACG students and their families in a position of risk. UBIQ sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this will cause and look forward to a safer 2022.
