Vol 16, Term Three, Week Ten, 25 September 2020
Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland We get to Covid Alert Level Two right on the school holidays here in Auckland, so at least parents and children will have some more freedom over this two-week break.
This is not a break for everyone however, Year Sixes and Nines have their Cambridge Checkpoint Examinations straight after the holidays and many Year Ten’s have their Combined Science Exam with the rest of the Seniors starting at this time too. Therefore, many students will be using some of the holiday period for revision. On that note, a vast majority of our staff will also be in at Sunderland offering a full suite of tutorials, covering most subjects over this period. I certainly encourage all students to attend. Thank you in advance to all those staff who are giving up their holidays to continue to support your children. We’ve spoken with the leader's numerous times over this term, I know there is a feeling of some disappointment that our usual celebrations here at Sunderland have not taken place this year. The Ball, Camps, Breakfast and Battle of the Bands all come to mind. I did need to remind them though, that no Sunderland student or parent has tested positive to Covid and all of you will be able to sit examinations at the end of this super challenging year and be able to carry on with their lives in 2021.
Term Four commences Monday 12 October & Summer Uniform

This can not be said for the vast majority of the rest of the world. I think at the end of our division most could understand our situation. As usual, there will be more work taking place over this holiday period, with the final aspects of the Café being fitted out. It is hoped this new development will be functioning in Term Four. As previously outlined, we will also be having four new classrooms coming online for 2021 as our wonderful school continues to grow. We are very excited with the new staff also coming on board. I will introduce these new ones towards the end of the year. This week we also celebrated Maori language week here at Sunderland with language and games being practiced throughout the school Thank you especially to Mrs Chartrand for her help here. Staff have been busy marking exams and writing reports over the past two weeks and Senior reports will be issued during the holidays (Next Friday by mail, they will also be available online). This delay is obviously due to Covid. I wish to congratulate everyone on a superb term – yes, there have been some challenges but actually – it has been so very successful! Have a wonderful break with family and friends and take care of yourselves too.
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Battle of the Bands Pre-recordings Sunderland has an awesome event every year which everyone loves. Battle of the Bands !! However this year, due to Covid – 19, participants have pre-recorded their music for Battle of the Bands, instead of performing live. After many weeks of practice, all band groups performed in amazing outfits and our music teacher Mr O’Connor filmed us. Although it was unfortunate that we couldn’t play in front of a live audience, we had multiple tries to get our piece to the best quality. Battle of the Bands is a good opportunity for anyone who plays an instrument and wishes to fill their lunch times with a ‘team activity.’ It has inspired me to practice my instrument more and improved my sense of rhythm. Moving to Sunderland Hi, my name is Aileen and I am in year 8. I moved to Sunderland this term and I wanted to share how great it is to learn at Sunderland. On the first day, I was quite nervous but our kind principal, Mr Villars, introduced myself to the school. I was worried that I might be alone but my assigned partner helped me get used to the school for three days. My classmates were all friendly, so I felt safe and grateful to my friends. All my teachers helped me and were so supportive. I would like to tell all my teachers that I am very thankful, and I appreciate how much effort they put into teaching us. I like how there are so many different cultures in this school and I’ve never felt this comfortable and safe in school before. I am happy that I joined the journalism club to learn more about writing, as well as getting to listen to other’s opinions. I plan to study hard so I can achieve my dream of becoming a veterinarian. I am looking forward to more events that will happen at school with my wonderful friends and supportive teachers. Written by Aileen Lim (year 8) 5

Studying Tips from my First Year of College Studying can be boring and can drone on and on but there are a few handy hacks that will help your study be fast and effective. 1. Colour coding Colour coding can make it easier to understand things. Try colour coding words that you don’t understand in your favourite colour and remember them! My teachers also have suggested to me as a way to understand things faster and easier. 2. 25 to 5 25 to 5 is a great technique to use if it is hard to concentrate during your study time. Here is how you study in 25 to 5: You study for 25 minutes and have a 5-minute break. This gives your mind a rest and gives you time to have a little stretch. 3. Have a set start and finish time This is a simple tip but it makes you feel more organised. By having a start and finish time, you will feel like you have put in more effort to achieve your goal of the day. 4. Organisation This is the key hack for my study tips. You need to make sure that you are organised at all times. This will make everything easier as you are sure of what you need to do. There are four of my best study tips. These study tips have helped me so much throughout my first year of college. I hope these tips can be helpful and useful to more people.

Year Seven English
ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland
Year 7 English – Spelling The Tigers spelling level groups are given some challenging words to learn each week. When practising spelling, it is important to not just learn how to spell the word, but also to learn how to use the word correctly. One of the spelling tasks is to write a short story incorporating this week’s words into a short story. Here is a wonderful example that James Good from 7C produced this week – well done James.
Trouble with the neighbours A lot of our neighbours were originally immigrants. Usually we have a very happy neighbourhood community and we have regular social get togethers where we all bring some food for the banquet. Unfortunately, our closest neighbours have a deep animosity towards dogs, and they think ours are a nuisance. Our neighbours are vegetarians so they don’t like our dogs when they go to urinate all over the food in their garden. We keep the gate closed and when they do leave the property they are always on a lead. Other than that, we get on very well. There is a lot that differentiates our community and culture from theirs. We love convenience food, but as vegetarians they like to cultivate and grow their own. In China, they have beautiful ancient buildings where most of ours are modern in comparison. Recently, we have had a large number of burglaries; mainly construction equipment, because many homes are being renovated. The good thing about our community is that we look out for each other. We will always persevere and get back up and running again.

House Service
ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland
In Term Four the Student Leadership team is supporting the Norwest Foodbank. The Norwest Foodbank works to ensure that everyone in our local community can enjoy the holiday season, by providing a Christmas meal for the families who need it. We are excited about the difference that we could make to our local community through the work of the Norwest Foodbank at this important time of year. For the first part of our service, each House will have a Christmas tree displayed on their house wall. To decorate the trees, we would like to offer you the opportunity to sponsor an ornament. Each ornament will be decorated with the name of the family that sponsors it, and the ornaments will vary in colour and size depending on the amount donated: Blue symbolises a $10 donation, red symbolises a $20 donation, silver symbolises a $30 donation and purple symbolise a donation of $50 or more. If you select ‘naughty’ on Legacy Day the House with the most ‘naughty’, Leaders will be punished first, followed by all other House Leaders. If you select ‘nice’ on Legacy Day, the House with the most ‘nice’ all students in that House will get a prize and only that House. Traditionally, we have supported the Norwest Foodbank by having donation boxes at reception where non-perishable food items can be donated. Six donation boxes will be left in the Reception area and labelled with McDonald, Tong, Fleming, Findlay, Whenuapai and Waitakere. Please place all food donations in the box that corresponds to your child’s House. The final part of the service will take place on Friday 6 November when we will hold a Whole School Mufti Day. The theme will be Festive themed, and each student will be required to bring a non-perishable food item as their donation on the day. Please give generously to this worthy cause. Thank you for your support. We look forward to your participation.
