ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term One, Week Five, 25 February 2022

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland Having concluded our second full week here at Sunderland, the students have settled back into school life well and the sounds of chatter and laughter ring throughout the school once again. As you will all be aware, after almost two years of having Covid-19 in NZ, ACG Sunderland has just received its first positive case this week. We can all congratulate ourselves on our studious undertakings to ensure our community is safe from this virus. Omicron seems to have taken a different direction regarding how it spreads and despite all our hard work, we could not keep this variant at bay. Email correspondence has been sent out over the past few days which is of the utmost importance to our community which I would like to reiterate below. On Thursday 24 February 2022 at 11.59pm, New Zealand moved to Phase Three on the Red Framework and one of the significant changes is that Close Contacts no longer need to isolate if they are symptom free. Moving forward, the only contacts that need to isolate are ‘Household’ contacts or near Household contacts. These contacts now need to isolate for ten days testing on day 3 and 10.

Please advise any changes in your address, phone or email to Sunderland@acgedu.com

If your child is sent home with Covid symptoms, then they can return when they produce a negative test and no longer have those symptoms. If a child tests positive for Covid-19, they must isolate at home for ten days from the date of the test. They may return to school after this isolation period. The Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) are now being widely used by the testing stations, GP’s and can be used also at home. Mrs Leanne Chartrand is our Senior Leader in charge of our Covid response. All test results should be emailed to Mrs Chartrand. Email: leanne.chartrand@acgedu.com We encourage all children who are well and showing no signs of covid symptoms to attend face to face classes at ACG Sunderland. As we conclude the week, we now have three positive cases in Years 3,7 & 10. During this Omicron period, we will let families know how many positive cases we are dealing with. Also note, it a child is at home isolating, there will be support material available online found on ClassDojo or Blackboard. We appreciate these are challenging times and some people are struggling with their continued Covid fatigue. The school is here to support your children through this time so please don’t hesitate to reach out if we can be of some assistance. Have a wonderful weekend everyone. Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Top 5 Cafeteria Snack Foods: The Professional Food Critic 5. Caramel slice: Priced at $3.00, the caramel slice has a ‘cheese-cake’ base, a middle layer of caramel, and the top is a sort of ‘cookie dough’ that is soft, but not raw. The size is on the larger side, so extremely cheap for the amount you get. I would recommend sharing this one with a friend, as about half of the slice size is the perfect amount. 4. Hashbrowns: These cost $1.00 and are the perfect size for a small snack, or a bite before class in the morning. They are about the size of an average person’s hand and have a crunchy outside but a relatively soft middle. 3. Chocolate cookies: Not to be confused with ‘chocolate-chip cookies’; they are basically pure chocolate cookies, with some ‘chips’ or ‘chunks’, solid or melted depending on how fresh out of the oven you get them. The outside is perfectly crunchy, and the inside all soft and melty – with an ‘oaty’ texture. This decadent treat is $2.50. 2. Cheesy garlic bread: This snack is on the larger side, however still extremely affordable at $2.50. It consists of a white bread bun, that looks like a short baguette, but has the consistency of soft white bread. The inside is filled with a garlic butter, and melted cheese. There is an option without cheese available for 30 cents cheaper ($2.20), but why would you skip the cheese?! 1. Finally, the best snack food of them all: WEDGES!!! Priced at $3.00, you get a whole bag of scrumptious wedges. The outside is usually firmer than the fluffy inside. The flavour is close to smoked paprika, and if you are intolerant to spice; they do have a bit of a kick. My favourite part of the bag are the little crumbs and crunchy bits at the bottom, although the big, pillowy wedges are delectable too. And that ends our list of the Top 5 Cafeteria Snack Foods, be sure to give them a try if you haven’t yet!

Senior Camp The journey began on a Tuesday morning. We sat on the stairs at the front of the school with our overly stuffed backpacks. As we talked about how excited we were, Stu helped us pack our luggage into the vans. And before we knew it, off we went. We all significantly underestimated how long the drive would be, but none of us complained about it, because the amount of card games and conversations we had as we sat in the cramped seats, were unmatched. We used pillows as tables and laughed as we struggled to keep all the cards from falling. About halfway through the drive, we took a break and swam in the Waikato River. It was scorching hot; not a single cloud to be seen, and we had just spent three hours in the same seat, so nothing felt as refreshing as jumping into the cold water. When we got to our campsite, we worked in pairs to set up tents. Before we knew it, we began to make dinner. Everyone was busy: some worked on the butter chicken, some worked on the rice, some worked on dessert, some worked on the salad. Hopes high, tummies empty, we began to devour the food. Unfortunately, we left the rice so undercooked, that it was still crunchy! 6:00am was wake up time. Once we were ready, we drove out about thirty minutes from our campsite. Mr Keen showed us our final IGCSE results; luckily, majority of us were beyond pleased with our grades. Stu gave us instructions and taught us how to use the paddles to steer and control the boat. I sat in the front, mainly because I didn’t want to steer the boat, but also because I quite liked paddling.

When we hit the first big rapid, two canoes (including mine) capsized. In all honesty, I enjoyed every bit of falling into the water, it was very relaxing. I don’t think Stu, Simon, Mr Keen and Mr Gerrard would say the same, because it was them who had to pull the heavy wooden canoe out of the water. When we encountered the second rapid three canoes capsized, including the two boats that had capsized before. This wasn’t as relaxing as we were being drifted downstream, and I also lost my drink bottle and sunscreen to the river. After we made another stop, we switched boats and I went in Stu’s boat and never capsized again! Eventually after eight long hours of being on the river, we made it back to our campsite. And not long after, we began making dinner. We made mashed potatoes, sausages and bought garlic bread – it was a huge upgrade from the night before. On Thursday, we had to pack our tents up first thing in the morning. We had some breakfast and then started canoeing downstream again. The river had less rapids along the way and we were more experienced in canoeing, so although the distance was roughly the same, we were done in six hours. We got to our motel rooms and had the opportunity to have hot showers, was a huge relief. It felt impossible to get out of bed at 6:00am on Friday, as the beds were so comfortable. Nevertheless, we did it anyway. On the last day of camp, we mountain biked down Horopito, Old Coach Road. At one point, we went down the wrong track, which was very steep and rocky, but it was awfully fun. No one was hurt, and we all loved it. After biking, we hopped in the van and came to the realisation that camp was almost over. We reached back to school around 7:00pm and thanked Stu, Mr Keen, Ms King and Mr Gerrard for transporting us, keeping us safe and making senior camp an unforgettable memory.

2 Events, 1 Article! Apologies, this article was supposed to be posted in the newsletter last week. However, I was just too carried away on Sky Sports *ba dum tss* Ok, never mind that was dry… But all jokes aside, I have typed up an account of 2 sports event I’ve been keeping up to date with. One is less writing than the other, because I only cared about the men’s finals for the 1st event. Enjoy! January 17th, 2022, in a rather populated city in Australia. We heard the cheering, the chanting and the “SIUUUUU” in Melbourne Park. Oh yes, Of course I’m talking about the “AO” also known as the Australian Open. International recognized tennis tournament was played between the 17th to the 30th. Seeing the “GOAT”, Nadal performing those staggering forehands, backhands, overheads, volleys onto Medvedev - and winning the overall slam, was FOR REAL entertaining! (Sorry Russian fans). But overall, the match was “glorious” and I’m most definitely looking forward to seeing who the next champion will be for AO23! On Ice, On Snow and Onto Podium? What do those 3 terms exactly mean – when put together? You guessed it! It’s the 2022 Winter Olympic Games! One of the top sport events I have been keeping up with this year. The main reason for it; because it was played in my home nation, China. Known as the first “Dual Olympic City” the country stunned the world 14 years ago, and it has stunned us even more 14 years later; today. Although, before the games there were misconceptions and false accusations targeted at China directly. These included people saying they were “Boycotting” the games, China’s “Human Rights Abuse” and as what the Americans calling it a “Genocide” against the Uyghurs. Therefore, The USA didn’t send any government officials as well as a few other countries. This got to the point, where some athletes who received a medal did some “disgusting” actions both on and off stage and during the games. This included wiping the podium before standing on it, fouling skaters and as well as throwing away the mascots they were given along with their medals. Looking onto the bright side, I am thrilled to watch all the short track speed skating events. Plus, a bunch of events on the Big Air Tower, Ice Ribbon and of course the national snow park located in Yanqing. Lastly, I have made my decision that this has been the most successful winter games for us. As an example, New Zealand has won our first gold medals achieved by both Zoi S. Synott and Nico Porteous. Both were young legends, who won bronze in the 2018 games. We also can’t forget about many of the athletes’ stories/journeys that made them reach where they are standing today! Some suffered illnesses, family issues or even injuries. I look forward to Milano Cortina Winter Olympics 2026, Paris 2024 Summer Olympics and you already know we can’t wait for the “FIFA World Cup” this year in Qatar!

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S). What is our Mission statement? To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community. To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination. How to get involved or get your badge? We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service. Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate. Below is the information for the badges:

Travis Hill – Guitar and Bass Tutor We’re very lucky to have a new guitar teacher at ACG Sunderland. Here’s what a long term colleague had to say about him. Travis is a great colleague. He is easy going, approachable, and an excellent communicator. Travis has really expanded his teaching skills and strategies and has thrived (not just survived) with his online teaching during the periods of lockdown. He is extremely positive and friendly, and many of his students remain in lessons with him through their entire time at school. So if you child is keen on the guitar I’m sure they will be very happy to have Travis as their teacher! You can contact him directly to set up a lesson time: Travis Hill travisjameshill11@gmail.com

Violin Teacher - Fiona Haughton There are so many ways that learning the violin can positively impact the lives of our young people. It brings physical confidence through improved co-ordination, stamina, posture and flexibility. It also brings mental and emotional confidence through developing memory, co-ordination of the senses, the ability to perform in public, working with others in ensemble situations, and the ability to express meaning and emotion through music. Children who learn the violin can play comfortably in ensembles, which allows them to engage with their friends and peers in a new way, and to experience performing in public with the security of being surrounded with others.

UBIQ has taken the decision to not proceed with second-hand buyback purchasing for the 2022 academic year. This is not a decision they have taken lightly as they feel it is a valuable service to provide to the students, and families attending ACG. However, in light of recent and ongoing outbreaks of the highly transmissible Delta variant of Covid-19 in the community and subsequent alert level changes, they strongly feel the need for ongoing caution and care. Even more so given the size of the campus we are based on, and recent cases that created exposure events on campus. For this reason, UBIQ are uncomfortable putting their staff, ACG students and their families in a position of risk. UBIQ sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this will cause and look forward to a safer 2022. 19
