WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term Two, Week Eight, 25 June 2021 Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland Some of you will be aware that my Mum passed away late last week. We celebrated her life on Wednesday hence, I have not been around so much this week. Funerals are a sad time for sure. However, they are an opportunity to recognise important times and celebrate them too. Organising such events also brings people and families together and that is why I am sharing a little of my week with you today. Families are the most important group that we will belong to in our lives, and we must cherish these groups! I can assure you, getting on with family, all of the time, is not easy. Yet, we must work hard to stay connected with our family, particularly our closest ones.
As we celebrate my mum’s life this week, one resonating characterise was apparent – that she was the glue that held our family together – the matriarch who kept everyone close. I think mums have an extra special position in our families and this was amplified loud and clear all week.

The Primary Swimming Carnival took place on Wednesday, too, and I understand it was another huge success, with a significant increase in participants in all events. With over fifty children in Year One currently, this part of the event took a huge amount of organisation and yet it all ran pretty smoothly. I wish to congratulate all competitors; it is a big thing to race when you are not that confident in the water. Mr Sam Baker did a wonderful job of organising the Primary Swimming and Primary Swimming Carnival assisted by the rest of the teaching staff and parents. The main event is obviously the staff verses student race, and I understand that the staff again won this event. Another great event – all around!! Next week is the last week of term and reports will be issued on Friday. Parent / Teacher interviews will take place early in Term Three. Have a wonderful weekend.
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

The West Auckland Regional Chess Competition On Wednesday, our chess team went to Kelston Boys High School to play in the NZCF West Auckland Regional Tournament. Even though we only came second, there were still many highlights to our trip. After arriving very early we helped the organisers set the tournament hall and played some friendly games. Not long after all the other teams arrived, and we started the tournament. The organisers went through all the usual rules and regulations, and we began. In our team we had three Year nines and a Year eight, so we had to play in the secondary section. Many of our opponents were either Year twelves or thirteens and the fact that almost all of them were a head taller than us did not help either. Despite this we managed to beat many of the said Year Twelves and Thirteens, only drawing against AIC and losing to Avondale college. We won against both the Kelston Boys teams and Rutherford College. We played a total of six rounds. Although we didn’t come first and qualify for nationals, we were by far the youngest team there and we always have next year!

Taylor Swift Appreciation Society The Taylor Swift Appreciation Society has been running since the start of the 2021 and since then the entire group has come a long way. We have had 3 new members join and have ben progressing amazingly together. We have been practising a large variety of songs and have made tremendous improvements. We are also hoping that this club will form friendships and create a wider community of Swifties! In the middle of term one we had a professional and very experienced singer called Possum Plows who is the lead singer of a band called Openside come and give up tips and give us an overall view of our singing. She has helped up enormously and we have been very grateful for her guidance. The club has helped build members confidence up and encouraged people to come out of their shells more. Unfortunately, the meetings are being cancelled due to battle of the bands but as soon as that’s done, we will be back up and running!

Programme
The Programme The programme is run over three days during the holiday’s giving year 7 & 8 girls the opportunity to try nine different sports and physical activities. We have coaches from different sporting codes come in and take the girls for a session . We understand not all girls want to play a sport, so we also include activities such as Dance, CrossFit, Boxing for Fitness and Spin classes, showing the girls there are other ways to be physically active. We would love to see the Girls who like sport or want to be more active but not sure where to start or what they might enjoy doing. There is no cost to attend the Programme, but Girls will have to apply as we have limited numbers.

ACG Sunderland Students Invoices As I mentioned during January, we moved to a new finance system at the start of the year. The implementation has gone smoothly and we’d like to thank parents who have amended their reference when making payment by bank transfer to the Communication Ref No. A small number of parents have not recognised the noreply-jde@inspirededu.com address that the invoices have been sent from, or have found that the emails have gone direct to junk. If you can please check these points if information is not coming through and, as always, please contact [EMAIL] at [NAME] or [NUMBER] if you have any accounts questions.
No Cheque payments from 22 June 2021 ACG Sunderland will not be accepting cheques from Tuesday 22 June 2021. Payments need to be made online or over the counter with Eftpos or Credit Cards (2% surcharge).
