ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term One, Week Nine, 25 March 2022
Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, What a storm hit Auckland on Monday morning – just on school drop off time! That was some serious rainfall and wind. I understand it is the second highest rainfall in one hour ever recorded here in Auckland. I want to compliment all the students who just adapted to the situation and went straight to class even if they were a little late. Even our little Year Ones were able to adjust and just got on! We had no real flooding at school – some of our newly-laid soil decided to move down the slope in the preschool car park – but really there were no issues. And, then by lunchtime, the sun was out and everyone was outside enjoying a wonderful Autumn afternoon. (I think you could actually see the grass growing). As outlined last week, the Covid numbers in Auckland are decreasing rapidly, as are the numbers here at Sunderland, which currently stand at 10 (at the time of writing my newsletter piece). With the Government announcements this week about Covid rule changes we can hopefully get back to some normality very soon.
To be kept up to date with Covid-19 and school information, please advise any changes in your address, phone or email to Sunderland@acgedu.com
ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

The removal of vaccination mandates for education workers will take effect from 11.59pm Monday 4 April.
•
On the same date, removal of the My Vaccine Pass from the COVID-19 Protection Framework (traffic light system).
•
There is no requirement to display QR code posters (although we encourage you to retain them) or have other processes, other than your regular processes, to support people to check-in. This system may need to return if case numbers rise.

•
For all New Zealanders, including school settings, masks will not be required outdoors.
•
Capacity limits will be removed for outdoor events and activities.

Orange •
There is no change to masks in education settings from the existing Orange setting. Masks are strongly encouraged to be worn when indoors and are required for children aged 12 and over on school transport.
•
As at Red, there will be no mask requirements when outdoors.
•
There will be no outdoor capacity limits.
•
Indoor capacity limits are also removed. However, for non-curriculum related events and activities you are strongly encouraged to use allocated seating for large events (such as those with more than 500 people) or apply a maximum capacity limit based on the maximum number of people who could occupy the space if each person was one metre apart.
Green •

Sunderland First XI vs St Peters (West/Central T20 semi-final) Having lost the toss, Sunderland were put into bat. A steady start from Sahil Patel and Finn O’Connor set the innings up well and some fireworks at the end from Shaldrick Adhar saw the team post 158/6 from our 20 overs. Early wickets put St Peters on the back foot, but a recovery through the middle saw them needing 60 runs from the last 6 overs with 7 wickets still in hand. Some sharp fielding and bowlers holding their nerve saw Sunderland come out on top with St Peters finishing on 130/6, a win to Sunderland by 28 runs. Shaldrick Adhar was the standout player on the day, with 28 not-out with the bat, two wickets bowling and two excellent stumpings while wicketkeeping. Sunderland will play Waitakere/Hobsonville this weekend in the final of the division.

The children were so excited to see a couple of their friends back here in Preschool after a couple of weeks at home. They enjoyed each other’s company, learning and being encouraged to communicate their needs appropriately and taking turns while playing and using resources. Most of our children are still enjoying exploring the trucks, showing determination and perseverance by balancing their whole body on a truck going down the ramp. We included a variety of books from the library about trucks and other transportation, identifying the type of cars and other vehicles that we see every day and talked about some that powerful transportation. It is great to hear the children asking questions and showing interest with curiosity about how these machines worked.
During group times, the older children are learning a different letter of the alphabet while the younger ones are looking at the 2D shapes, learning the names in English and in Te reo Maori, and sorting them into individual groups.

Study Hacks Studying = Student Dying! Studying is something most of us dread as it is not entertaining. I get distracted very easily! So, here’s some hacks that worked for me! 1) 2)
3)
4) 5)
6) 7)
8)
Try not to work in your bedroom, and no I’m not saying to go study in your siblings/parents’ room; try studying in your kitchen or even in the hallway. Somewhere where you can’t get easily distracted. If you must study in your room, avoid your bed. You sleep in your bed and relax there, doing homework or studying in bed will make you super comfy your brain will think it’s time to sleep. Another negative about working in bed is when you go to relax/sleep your brain can think its time to work, giving you a restless night’s sleep. Try working on a seat, at a desk or on the floor. A handy hack which is very underrated is being prepared. A lot of people are like “yup, I’m prepared,” but are you really? A few things you should have before you study are: tissues, water, one or two HEALTHY snacks, a minimalistic to-do list about what you want to cover, the necessary stationery and books. You may need a few other things but try to avoid electronics, games, anything that will distract you. Writing a song about the topic really helps. This one may seem weird, but it really helps (just don’t sing it in your exam). Exercising and showering are important every day, but can really help when you are studying. Try 30 minutes exercise every day and having a five-minute cold shower in the morning, and a nice warm relaxing shower before bed to boost productivity. Having a clean workspace is very helpful and can help improve efficiency. It helps you stay calm and not become frazzled and/or unorganised. Having set work times is a hack that is meant to train your brain. Try starting at 8.30am and finishing at 3.00pm, just like school hours, but if you don’t feel like doing that during the holidays; try pushing it forward or back an hour or two. Finally, wear something comfy! And no, I don’t mean hop into your pjs; I am trying to say wear some comfy leggings or sweatpants and a comfy t-shirt/ hoodie, rather than something that will distract you from your work because it is uncomfortable.
Hope these help you study for the exams! I will be back with more hacks soon!

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S). What is our Mission statement? To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community. To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination. How to get involved or get your badge? We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service. Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate. Below is the information for the badges:
