ACG SUNDERLAND WINGS NEWSLETTER

Vol 19, Term One, Week One, 27 January 2023

Dear Parents and Friends of ACG Sunderland

I wish to welcome back all existing students and parents to the Sunderland community, and I also wish to particularly highlight to over 140 new children and parents joining our community this week. A huge welcome to you all.

It was wonderful to meet so many of you at the New Parents Morning Tea on Thursday and I wish to remind you all about the information evenings coming up Wednesday 1 February (Primary) and Thursday 2 February (College), both start at 6.30pm.

With the growth of the school and a couple of resignations too, I am excited to welcome 13 new staff for 2023. Below is a brief bio of each of the new staff.

Not only are we celebrating our new teachers joining ACG Sunderland, but we are also recognizing our new school leaders for 2023.

As I highlighted last year, we have decided as a community that the labels of Head Boy and Head Girl were a little dated and did need refreshing.

Meet the Teacher – 6.30pm

Primary - Wednesday 1 February College – Thursday 2 February

Public Holidays: Monday 30 January & Monday 6 February

Therefore, today I can share that for 2023 and beyond, our name of our school leaders will be called ‘Head Students’ and are:

Anjika Sharma

Shreya Prasad

This week the students of each of the Houses also voted for their leaders along with staff and senior leadership input too.

Therefore, we can also announce the leaders of each of the Houses are:

Findlay – Mason Wang & Bhadhwaaj Ganta

Fleming – Amelie Villars & Justin Shan

McDonald – Syna Dhankani & Rory Neil

Tong – Anton Vrdoljak & Natasha Woolley

Waitakere – Celine Young & Ashita Joshi

Whenuapai – Cedric Siriwardana & Erica Cai

I am so very proud of our leadership team in 2023 and look forward to working with this wonderful group.

Not only are we celebrating our new students and leadership teams, but many of our students sat Cambridge Examinations last year and produced some of our best results. Below are some of the highlights.

• 100% pass rate at A Level with 76% at A-C grade and 37% at A-A*

• 92% pass rate at AS Level with 62% at A-C grade and 25% at A-A*

• Over 90% UE pass rate

• Secondary Checkpoint 90% pass rate

• Primary Checkpoint 85% pass rate

Congratulations to our wonderful student body, we were all so very pleased with these results.

Early Learning School

Under 2’s Room

This week we made paper firecrackers to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Junior Room

Xīn nián kuài lè! The children of the Junior Room have been celebrating Chinese New Year this past week with traditional Chinese stories, songs, and dances. Children were gifted red envelopes with chocolate gold coins by families as a symbol of good fortune.

As we settle into 2023, the Junior Room children have had a learning focus of friendships and developing meaningful connections as they immerse themselves back into the learning space. When young children have a strong sense of belonging which supports positive selfesteem, they are able to actively participate in the learning that is occurring around them.

Parents and Friends Committee

Dear Parents and Friends of ACG Sunderland, ACG Sunderland is an independent school whose students are of incredibly diverse ethnicity. From pre-school to senior college the school strives to help their students achieve their full potential. The Parents and Friends Committee works alongside this aim of the school.

Parents and Friends is a committee run by volunteers all, unsurprisingly, are friends or families of the school! The committee raises funds to cover items of benefit to the students that are not covered by school fees. In the past this has included such things as donations to the school ball, shade sails over playgrounds, cricket nets, and the planting of a hedge for privacy at the front of the primary playground.

All activities run by Parents and Friends are fun, social activities that help to instil a feeling of belonging throughout all families attending the school. Meetings take place on the first Thursday of every month at 8.30am in the staffroom. Please let Mrs Sonya Eldridge know if you are interested in joining the committee by email: sonya.eldridge@acgedu.com

The next meeting is Thursday 2 February 2023.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland

Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S).

What is our Mission statement?

To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community.

To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination.

How to get involved or get your badge?

We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service.

Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate.
