ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term Two, Week Four, 27 May 2022

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, I wish to acknowledge the amount of hard work both staff and students have put into the assessment process last week and this week too, as students have confirmed to catch up examinations missed due to isolation etc. We all appreciate the challenge it has been to get most students to have completed the examination series, however, the feedback and feedforward generated by the process is what makes the school so highly successful. Staff will now be going through the exams with students over the next week or so giving those all-important feedback hints to students. Some of this is repeated in the reporting processes that parents will receive at the end of the term, but it’s the feedback right now that is all important. On Wednesday afternoon I was at Rutherford College for a Basketball match – I manage the Under 15 Team here at Sunderland.

If your child has an appointment during school hours and you are collecting them, please email their class teacher advising them of the time of pickup so your child can be down at reception ready.

The first half was a tight affair with Rutherford up by two points at the break – however, in the second half the young Sunderland team played a more defensive game – generating turn overs and ended up winning 52-32. We were all very pleased about the result. During the course of the game, Mr Gary Moore, the Headmaster of Rutherford came into the gym hall and was watching the game. At the end of the game, I introduced Mr Moore to the team to say hello – they all greeted him and shook his hand, as a good Sunderland student would do. I was very proud of how the team had played and conducted themselves on and off the court. That evening I received a text message from the Headmaster. “Nice to meet a bunch of boys who automatically look to shake your hand and default to respect as their go to option”. We take it for granted at times that the ‘Sunderland Way’ is the ‘New Zealand Way’, however that is not the case and its pretty special that another leader recognises the difference our school is providing our students. Have a wonderful weekend. Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Preschool had a great time exploring many numeracy and literacy based activities.

Many of our children are interested in puppet shows, building Dinosaur Zoo, blow painting and building towers with Lego’s.

The children in the Under 2s room have had a wonderful week enjoying the outdoor space as well as appreciating quieter times reading books and becoming familiar with a variety of nursery rhymes. "Five Little Ducks" is definitely a fan favourite!

“This week the Junior Preschool Room has been focusing on collaboration and art exploration. Working alongside each other, learning to share and help each other with puzzle matching skills. Shared painting experiences where children are learning about textures and patterns left on the paper from various sponges and rollers. Name recognition through fine motor skill painting supports children to recognise familiar letters.”

TERM 2 CHARITY: What’s Up? Dear Parents and Caregivers In Term Two, ACG Sunderland is supporting What’s Up. What’s Up is a mental health charity that supports children and teens all throughout New Zealand, by offering advice and information about anything and everything that our kids are struggling with today. Please encourage your children to participate in any of the fun activities going on throughout the term, and know it is also for a great cause. We will also recognise the kind donations made by announcing the Family names of those who donated (if they would like) in the weekly newsletter. Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S). What is our Mission statement? To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community. To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination. How to get involved or get your badge? We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service. Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate. Below is the information for the badges:
