ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

I wish to thank our Librarian, Mrs Debbie Davies for organising this outstanding week. I also wish to acknowledge all our Primary staff for their assistance with all this fun too. The whole week will culminate on Friday night with our first Parents & Friends Primary Disco for the year. Thank you for all your support. Primary swimming has been continuing this week too, with all our little swimmers making excellent progress as we head towards our Swimming Carnival on Wednesday 23 June. Next Friday is perhaps one of the most important days of the year, when all our Grandparents and Special Friends of the Primary school come and visit us here at Sunderland. There is a special assembly, classroom visits and then a morning tea to help recognise and celebrate the role Grandparents make to our students and our school.

I wish to acknowledge all our students who worked so very hard for their examinations last week. The initial feedback about their performance has been very positive and by early next week, all students should have their results returned. Parents, if you have any questions about your child’s performance, please do not hesitate to make contact with individual staff once results have been finalised. Have a wonderful weekend!

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Nathan Villars Campus Principal ACG Sunderland

Pink shirt day

Most of us know pink shirt day as a day where we wear pink shirts in support of anti-bullying, but where did it all begin? Pink shirt day began in 2007, in Canada. A year ten student was harassed and bullied for wearing pink, when two other students brought in pink shirts to distribute to their classmates, in protest. When the news spread online, hundreds of students showed up at school wearing pink in support of the anti-bullying movement. Pink shirt day has been celebrated in New Zealand since 2009. Bullying is an issue that needs addressing, despite not being prominent at Sunderland. Bullying can lead to mental health issues (such as anxiety and depression), and a low self-esteem. Other than bullying being awful for the victim, it can also affect work productivity and physical health, having long lasting impacts on the victim’s future. Pink shirt day is also a day to educate yourself on what bullying is. There are three main ways to recognise the difference between bullying and misunderstandings, single acts of spite or hassling/teasing . 1. Bullying is deliberate – intentionally harming someone. 2. Bullying often involves a clear difference of dominance in a relationship. 3. Bullying is repeated behaviour – it happens more than once. Bullying is NOT: 1. A difference of opinion causing an argument (one that can usually be sorted without extra involvement). 2. A dispute between people with the same amount of power over each other. 3. A one-off argument. It is important to remember these things when making accusations or jumping to conclusions. It is essential to educate yourself on what bullying is, so that you can easily recognise it and act when necessary. Additionally, we need to keep in mind that the bully may have a very specific reason for acting in such an aggressive way. They may have a bad home situation or may have also been bullied previously. So, what can you do to end the cycle of bullying? Well to begin, be sure to have a clear definition of bullying, so it is easier recognised, and the action can be pinpointed and addressed. Another crucial thing to do is have open communication. Listen to both sides of the story and take feelings into account; be empathetic. When doing these things, keep an open mind and don’t be biased. Finally, to show our support for anti-bullying, we wore pink accessories to school on Monday. Check out the photos below! The Introspective Visionary People say sleep is the cousin of death, And I wonder if that makes me a dreamer, am I in control? Refreshed by weakness that tastes with every breath Coming to a realisation that nothing is simple, do I have an end goal? There’s everlasting troublesome as ignorance makes a peace of mind, Exasperated parity, Hard to find. You know that already, resisting the temptation of running away, leaving my fate, Pain seers his fingertips, every still word dismantles his mind, Cries of my stress, distress, misfortune or fears that never evaporate, Calluses crawl in his hands clenched so tightly, that’s frightening, Misguided by influence of the world, Questioned him by asking is he of worth? That undeniable fissure of pressure suffocating his throat, clasping tightly, Confused with a confession of forgiveness, no respect, he’s a hypocrite. I can feel it running away from me, raised up in certain chronology, Anger left his palm, guilt driven emotions, his lies are just biology. Overwhelmed by the consequences of his wrong decision, Clouded with clarity, I have a vision.

By Justin Shan, Year 11

“Wake up Danny!” Danny’s mom cried. Danny flinched and peeked through a single open eye, he scanned across the room to where his alarm clock sat, he glanced at the red illuminated figures, his mind struggled to keep up with the events going on around him. Loud banging brought him back down to earth, he murmured “Yes?” “You’re going to be late!” came the voice, jolted back to life his body scurried off the bed into a mess of limbs on the wooden floor. “Ow,” He crawled slowing but steadily upwards to get dressed, it was then when he his eyes locked back on the alarm clock, “No!” He sprinted down the stairs where his nose sensed the delicious smell of pancakes, “Ahh, the smell of them,” He thought but his mind was already deep in panic to stay, he ran across the room to his desk, snatched his dirty bag and stuffed books and pencils within arms reach into the bag. Jogging around the house looking for all sorts of items he thought useful to take. One sharp turn and his legs stumbled over his dog his hand reached for the door handle missed by millimetres and everything in his arms crashed onto the floor. “What was that ruckus!” yelled Danny’s mother. “Nothing!” Danny yelled back with a fake casual tone, but inside, he can feel himself burning with panic, it’s going to be his first day at school and he’s going to be late! Everything will be so embarrassing! He crouched down to gather the items before rushing back to his bag, he then dumped all of the things he’s been carrying into the bag and ran straight to the front door, “Bye mom!” shouted Danny, it wasn’t until when he was at the mailbox before he heard a shout from behind, he heard the word ‘Friend’ and ‘Party’ and realised… Andy Wang, Year 8

ACG Sunderland Students Invoices As I mentioned during January, we moved to a new finance system at the start of the year. The implementation has gone smoothly and we’d like to thank parents who have amended their reference when making payment by bank transfer to the Communication Ref No. A small number of parents have not recognised the noreply-jde@inspirededu.com address that the invoices have been sent from, or have found that the emails have gone direct to junk. If you can please check these points if information is not coming through and, as always, please contact [EMAIL] at [NAME] or [NUMBER] if you have any accounts questions.
