WINGS NEWSLETTER
Vol 18, Term Four, Week Three, 28 October 2022
Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland,
I hope everyone enjoyed the ‘summer like’ long weekend.
We have almost concluded the internal examinations for the Year 5 10 students. I appreciate that this can be a pinch point in the year for students, staff, and parents alike, as we all navigate this challenging time.
In the end, what we want is a clear representation of how the students are performing in each of their subjects, and to remove as many barriers to this testing as we can.
I believe that staff will be busy marking as you read this newsletter and the students will have results during next week.
Incremental improvements are what parents and staff members can expect, and I am sure most of our young scholars have done very well.
Reports for all Primary and Lower College students will be available on the last day of school, 6th December.
Please ensure all clothing is named. Check for lost items in lost property box prior to end of Term.
This year the School Houses are again supporting the NorWest Care Trust Foodbank with their aim of supplying over 300 families with food hampers as we head towards Christmas. I have seen some wonderful donations of non perishable foods in the donation boxes at the front of the school. Please keep this going as we aim to beat last year's number of over 1000 individual donations.
There is also an opportunity to give a financial donation (earn a Christmas decoration) and give the students even more opportunity to purchase more goods for the overall donation.
I personally want to thank you all for your donations this year. Monday is Halloween and this year, for the first time, the Preschool are dressing up to celebrate this festival photos next week for sure!
Have a wonderful weekend everyone
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Value for next week is: Enthusiasm
Intense and eager enjoyment, interest, or approval.
Early Learning School
Under 2’s Room
This week we played with clay to develop tamariki's hand and eye coordination and finger and hand muscles.
Junior Room
For this term, our junior children are interested in cause and effect. This is part of our Schema inquiry project, repeated patterns of behavior which allow children to explore and express developing ideas and thoughts through their play and exploration. Children are exploring schematic activities like transformation. They love how the objects change; mixing objects and substances; pouring water in lots of different things; covering objects or themselves in substances or paint; mixing colors of the paint. Transforming schema often allows for things to get messy nothing stays in clean order!
Early Learning School
Senior Room
We visited the garden and planted vegetable seeds - okra, sweet corn, spring onion, pumpkin and many more. Everyone had a go and really enjoyed it. We talked about how we can look after it and sustain its life.
We have been learning the /j/ sound this week and the Piwakawaka group had a fun game identifying objects that starts with most of the sounds we have learned through Jolly Phonics.
Preschool Diwali Celebration
Week 3 Assembly
The Lower Primary trophy went to Yomal Navaratne 3HAS this week Year 3 Overnight Camp – Kelly Tarltons
All Year 3 students went for sleepover at Kelly Tarlton's on Friday 21st October, and it was a massive hit! Kids got to feed fish, had a tour, had a delicious supper, and got to sleep in the fish tunnels and finally had breakfast. It was the most amazing experience of this year.
Charlie and David’s Lemonade Stall
Charlie Whalan and David Viner from 2ZOU.
Everything they have been learning at school with maths, especially money this year has been taught so well and it showed today.
They made a lemonade stand and between the two of them made $111.00 profit. Everything they did, they did themselves from squeezing the lemons to pouring the lemonade, adding up order values in their heads and counting out the change correctly.
So thank you ACG Sunderland for everything you have been teaching them, their first attempt at a business went extremely well as a result!
A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Love
Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream is a play about many things like love, magic, comedy, and jealousy. But one of the most important aspects of the play is love. There are 5 different couples with their own twists and turns but today we will only explore 3. Helena and Demetrius, Hermia, and Lysander, and finally Oberon and Titania.
One form of love in this play is unrequited love. This is shown in the relationship between Helena and Demetrius. “I’ll follow thee and make a heaven of hell, to die upon the hand I love so well.” This quote by Helena shows how much she loves Demetrius, and how she would follow him no matter where he goes. This is shown in this quote “I love thee not, therefore pursue me not.” This shows how Demetrius does not love Helena and despises her. Helena does not hold herself to a high standard, unlike Demetrius who thinks he is very important. Helena loves Demetrius, but Demetrius does not love Helena. This love is one sided and unrequited.
In the case of Oberon and Titania, their love displays how both partners can be broken up over jealousy. An example of this is when titania said “What, jealous Oberon? Faries skip hence: I have foresworn his bed and company.”. This shows how Oberon is jealous of titania for not spending time with him but instead with the changeling boy. Titania then goes on to say that Oberon has a mistress which is shown in this Quote here "Your buskined mistress and your warrior love”. This shows that Oberon's mistress is Hippolyta. But Oberon retaliates by saying “Knowing I know thy love Theseus?”. This shows how many problems can be formed by the forgeries of jealousy. Another form of love presented in the midsummer night's dream was returned love. This love was with Hermia and Lysander. From Athens is her house remote seven leagues, and she respects me as her only son. There, gentle Hermia, may I marry thee,” This quote by Lysander shows that he loves Hermia and is willing to leave Athens for her just to marry her. “Tomorrow truly will I meet with thee.” This shows that Hermia is willing to go with him and leave Athens in the name of love. This shows that in this relationship the love is returned and both characters are willing to go long way just to be with each other.
In conclusion, in the play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, Shakespeare presents the audience with love in various ways like Jealous love, Returned love, and unrequited love. He effectively uses a number of different techniques in his presentation of love, for instance, verse, dramatic irony, rhyming couplets, and monologues. I find Shakespeare’s treatment of Hermia and Helena is particularly effective because They mirror each other. Hermia has returned whereas Helena has unreturned love. Hermia is very happy with herself whereas Helena thinks she is ugly because Demetrius doesn’t like her but instead likes Hermia.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland
Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S).
What is our Mission statement?
To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community.
To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination.
How to get involved or get your badge?
We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service.
Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate.
