Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland Welcome back to school for 2021 and, a huge welcome in particular to our new students beginning for the first time this week. Our first week has gone very smoothly and I wish to highlight our teaching staff for assisting in this transition from holiday mode to school mode so successfully. At this time, I wish to welcome our seven new members of staff to Sunderland. I know their first couple of days have also gone very well. Ms Rama Al Jazairli has over 6 years of experience in New Zealand and overseas in teaching English language and she has a Bachelor of Arts from University of Damascuas. Rama is joining our College as a Teacher Aide. Mr Shaun Brickman joins the teaching staff in the Primary as a Year Three teacher. With a Bachelor of Education, Shaun is passionate about seeing all children develop to their full potential. Mrs Penny Gerrard has eleven years’ experience teaching Science and will be teaching College Science, Biology and Marine Science. She has a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and Bachelor of Science and is looking forward to joining our school.

Mrs Mehwish Hasan is a motivated, well organised and creative teacher which will be joining our Primary teaching staff. Mehwish has a Diploma in Teaching Primary, a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Engineering in Telecommunication and a Diploma of Associate Engineering Electronics. Mr Eilian Jones is a passionate educator with excellent subject knowledge in his specialist area which is Physical Education and joins our Physical Education and Health Department. He has a Bachelor of Education with honours specialising in Physical Education. Mr Carlos Miranda is a hardworking and motivated individual whose interests include reading, fitness training and participating in marathons and triathlons. Carlos is joining our College Science Department as a Science Technician. He has many years of experience working in laboratories, including managing the Massey University Laboratories. Miss Cassandra Sealy also joins the Primary teaching staff as Year One Teacher. She has a Masters in Education, a BSc in Sports Science, a PGCE in Primary Education and a Diploma in Zoology. Her core teaching philosophy is an enthusiasm for exposing students to experiences that allow them to test their understanding of information, ideas and concepts and that strengthen existing capabilities or encourage new capabilities to emerge.

I would also like to welcome back the following staff from overseas: Mr Paul Devereux Miss Christiana Fleming. I also wish to congratulate our students of 2020 on their wonderful examination results. Even in the face of a global pandemic, our Sunderland students were able to take on the Cambridge examinations and generate our best ever results. Below is a summary of our results: •

100% pass rate at A Level with 66% at A-C grade and 46% at A-A*

93% pass rate at AS Level with 71% at A-C grade and 34% at A-A*

91% pass rate with 82% of our IGCSE results at A-C grade and 41% at A-A*

Secondary Checkpoint 94% pass rate, with 43% at top grade

Primary Checkpoint 89% pass rate, with 51% at top grade

I can also share that two of our students will be recognised in the Cambridge Awards evening coming up on the 18 February, actually gaining three awards. On Wednesday morning, we also had the opportunity to celebrate the recognition of our College Leaders for 2021. There were difficult decision to be made. When people put themselves forward to take on new roles then disappointment is always a potential by product. However, I am so proud of how our young people handle this personal development and our team appears strong and ready to take on this exciting year ahead. 2

It was lovely that so many parents and leaders from last year were able to share in the awards assembly on Wednesday morning. Our Primary Leaders were named on Friday and I will highlight them next week. Teaching and learning has begun very efficiently. Your children should have homework already, lockers allocated, sports booklets distributed and enjoying our new café facility too. You are welcome to purchase your coffees from our café – perhaps as you navigate our new parking situation and for the Auckland traffic. Have a wonderful long weekend and I look forward to catching up on Tuesday 2 February.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.
