ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term Three, Week One, 29 July 2022

Dear Parents & Friends of Sunderland Welcome back to Sunderland & Term Three. A very special welcome to the 32 new students who all joined our wonderful school on Monday of this week. At our Primary and College assemblies, we inducted our new students into school as they received their certificates & badges for their blazers. The campus now has over 700 students attending Sunderland daily. On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week the school hosted our second round of Parent/Teacher interviews for both the Primary and the College. From my perspective, the interviews appeared to go very smoothly and from the conversations I had with parents, they were receiving accurate and timely feedback and feedforward. If for any reason you missed your appointment or you wish to have a longer meeting with a particular teacher, please make direct contact with that teacher. In the beginning of the holidays, the Sunderland Ball committee hosted our senior students at the Markovina Vineyard Estate in Kumeu. The venue was wonderful, the food excellent and the students danced and partied until 12.00am.

Open Evening – Thursday 4 August 6.30pm – 8.30pm

As you would expect, the students were respectful, very well behaved and dressed impeccably. I was so very proud of everyone – staff included..

Not only did 32 new students join us this week, we also welcomed three staff members too. We welcomed back Mrs Janicka Hockly to Sunderland – Janicka has been on maternity leave after the birth of her child late last year. She is our Year 0 teacher for the remainder of 2022. I am delighted to welcome Jules Robson our Deputy Principal who will start on Monday 25 July. Jules has been a teacher at King's College for eighteen years. He is currently the Head of Assessment, having previously been the Head of Biology. Jules has significant experience with teaching and assessing the Cambridge Biology curriculum. He is also an author for the Marine Science syllabus. Jules is keen on Martial Arts, and has practised Japanese Jujutsu for thirty-five years, creating his own dojo in West Auckland. I would like to welcome Natalia Lytkina to our College Mathematics team. Natalia has taught IB Mathematics, IGCSE, AS and full A level in both private and state schools. She believes that building supportive and nurturing relationship with students is critical to learning. Therefore, it is important to her to create a safe classroom environment where students gain confidence, are not afraid to ask questions, and their opinions are valued and respected. Outside school, she enjoys spending here leisure time with her family, reading, gardening, and taking care of her cat, Shireen. 2

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

Under 2’s Room When the weather allowed us to, the children had fun playing outside with balls!

Junior Room The Junior Room children have been busy focusing on name and letter recognition this week. Each child has a turn to find their own name card and share the letter of their name with the group, we sound out each letter to support the knowledge of letter sounds. The children have enjoyed using a letter matching game to identify familiar letters. Working together they help each other find the correct letter to match their card.

Senior Room Early L:earning School tamariki have had so much fun exploring areas of indoor play when we couldn’t be outside, such as family play, drawing, sandpit, shapes target game, college, puzzles and quiet activities like reading. It was another exciting week learning with our Early Learning School children. We started our jolly phonics program, to teach children how to identify different letter sounds (of the alphabet) so they can read and eventually write them.

Senior Ball – Markovina Vineyard Estate “ACG Sunderland’s school ball took place on the 2nd of July at Markovina Vineyard Estate - a night to remember for the seniors of our school. From the dancing till midnight, the wide range of unforgettable desserts, and arm-wrestling competitions, we all had a chance to let loose at the Great Gatsby themed ball, a great way to end the term. Many memories were captured by the photographer and photobooth at the magical venue, and we hope everyone enjoyed their time. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and made this night incredible, and we look forward to next year!” By Mia Shankar – Year 13

Battle of the Bands Battle of the Bands happens every year and it is an event to enjoy the performances of our talented school bands. There are also a first, second and third places chosen. Like every other year, each of the bands had a time slot for rehearsals once a week, as well as practice at home for the last few months. For the last two years, I have enjoyed watching the Battle of the Bands and so I decided to give it a go this year because I have been learning drums for some time. I am glad that I participated as it was a worthwhile decision. Jacob, Shayan, Monika, Eloise, Heidi, and I formed a band and once we decided on songs, we were on our way to show off our musical talents. Mr O’Connor named us ‘Split Level’ because we are all in different year groups, and soon the name grew on us. We had practice once a week after school and sometimes we also had extra practices at lunch which helped a lot for our band to improve. Another aspect we were excited about was the outfits. Some bands decided to pick a theme for the outfits they would wear on the day which gave the performance an extra push. I love the Battle of the Bands as it is fun to watch people playing as well as going up and experiencing it for yourself. On stage I was slightly nervous at first but seeing everyone cheer us on helped me to relax and gain confidence. I loved how enthusiastic and interactive the audience was. They were fun and supportive towards all the bands, by clapping and singing along. The highlight of the day was when some of our talented teachers went up and sung ‘Material Girl’ together. The outfits chosen were very colourful and bright and everyone was very hyped up. At one point the teachers started to dance and the audience went wild. Oh boy! What an afternoon. The MCs were hilarious and did an amazing job at keeping us entertained with their jokes. We are also very thankful to Mr O’Connor for organizing everything and helping all the band . I can’t wait for the Battle of the Bands next year!!!

Why are holidays important? It’s the first week back and I’m sure a lot of people are relieved because they are able to see their friends again, who they might not have had the opportunity to see in the holidays. You might also be dreading this term, which is completely understandable, but we are halfway through this year! Hopefully everyone has relaxed during the holidays and had fun. It’s obviously enjoyable to take a break from lessons and studying and just relax without having to fret about whether you did the homework, or if you sent in that last minute essay. Holidays are vital in a way you might not realise; it’s easy to burnout from all the schoolwork, but the holidays can act as a mental reset and are immensely important for your mental health. So yes, it may feel as though you are being lazy during the holidays, or not doing enough – but in the long run, holidays are not only enjoyable, but also vital to maintaining motivation and good mental health.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S). What is our Mission statement? To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community. To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination. How to get involved or get your badge? We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service. Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate. Below is the information for the badges:
