ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term Four, Week Three, 29 October 2021

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, Frustratingly, the announcement on Wednesday afternoon with regards to any further information about the return to school for our Years 0-10 was very brief on detail, leaving Senior Management here at Sunderland secure in the knowledge that for at least the next two weeks, ACG Sunderland students will continue to study from home. We also wish to acknowledge how hard our young ones have been working with tests and assessments also taking place this week. Therefore, I have made the decision to generate a day from their studies next Friday 5 November. Staff will not be online, and students are not expected to be carrying out any formal learning process. This is to allow our young ones to recharge batteries and play outside, etc. I am also acknowledging the tremendous work our staff have done completing 13 weeks of online lessons and tutorials. Everyone needs to acknowledge and accept these are unprecedented times and a break is required now, as we then push for the home stretch of just over four weeks.

VIRTUAL OPEN DAY – 30 OCTOBER 2021 10.30am

ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

If by chance the Lower College and Primary students do come back to school this term, I would like to reiterate that there will be NO exams, just the testing which has happened this week. Our senior students continue to do an outstanding job with sitting their examinations during a Level 3 lockdown environment. Mr Stephens and his team of invigilators and admin staff are keeping the process going as well and keeping everyone safe. There will be about 10 students who will be in at school for a morning exam on the 5 November with Mr Stephens. On a positive note, the school is now fully staffed for next year, with seven new staff onboard – five of these staff are employed due to growth. I am super excited about the calibre of the new personnel joining the Sunderland Team and will introduce them all to you in due course. Take care everyone.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Nathan Villars Campus Principal ACG Sunderland

Value for the next week is: Courage The ability to do something that frightens one; bravery.

Preschool Online Learning This week in our zoom lesson preschool learned about the life cycle of a plant. The plant life cycle consists of four stages; seed, sprout, small plant, and adult plant. When the seed gets planted into the soil with water and sun, then it will start to grow into a small sprout. When the sprout begins to grow roots that go deep into the ground and a stem that stretches through the soil, the plant will start to grow leaves towards the sun. The sun helps the plant to produce food which it will need when it becomes a small plant. When the plant becomes an adult, then you will either see it bloom into beautiful flowers, fruits, or vegetables and possibly attract some pollinators, birds, or other creatures. Birds and other animals can spread the seeds around from the plant and start the process all over again.

Preschool Online Learning Preschool value the importance of cultural events and enjoy celebrating festivals together with our children and their families. We provide lots of opportunities for the children to learn about the festival, and the meaning and importance of this celebration. Next week is Diwali festival and preschool children are very excited to celebrate Indian festival of lights . On this occasion children made the Diyas ( candle holder), Lantern , Made the Rangoli pattern and watched the Diwali festival story. Children also made the Indian sweet the coconut Laddu. The children learnt that there are four days of celebration. Rangoli patterns (usually done on the first day) are used to welcome friends and family to the house, and sweets are made to share. The third day is the Diwali Festival of Lights. This is where Diya (clay lamps ) are lit in the evening and placed around the house. Fireworks are set off. The fourth day is New Years Day and on this day you wear new clothes. Te Whariki states that children and families feel a sense of belonging and feel comfortable with the routines, customs and rituals. We foster ‘ako’ (teaching and learning) and ‘tuakana-teina’ (shared learning).

A YEAR TO REMEMBER A few days ago, I decided to do something extremely useless. I googled the most searched phrase/word of 2020. Coronavirus was the number one most searched topic globally. With zoom coming in fourth, there were no surprises. But let’s get into the real topic here: lockdown and COVID. I mean, the first lockdown last year was just like any other holiday for me. It was like a phase; I wasn’t worried about it AT ALL! Me staying at home, attending online lessons, not worrying about the outside world: what could possibly go wrong, right? I’m just joking, I do worry about the outside world. In fact; New Zealand Herald had become my second most viewed website of 2020 (following close behind myACG). Previously, I mentioned that the lockdown was like a holiday. I could do work whenever I wanted, classes were only 5 – 20 minutes long, and most importantly I could slack off and watch YouTube or Netflix between lessons. Just admit it, we all did it. August 17th might very well have been the last day of in-person school in 2021. I try to stay optimistic and not think that, because I don’t want to miss out on so many fun things I had planned with my friends – like my table tennis championship. Who would’ve thought that coronavirus would come back again, even worse than last year? But it is what it is, we have made it through a twomonth lockdown so far. How fun. I’m currently writing this on the 71st day of lockdown, can you imagine how fun that is? Well, I mean you can, because you’re in Auckland, right? But still, not doing what I usually would do is getting crazy. I Just want to go anywhere at any time and not be worried about the pesky virus that’s spreading around. However, if you’re vaccinated, that lowers the risk (get vaccinated)! On the bright side, I’ve managed to develop several skills over this period. For example, I’ve learnt how to create pointillism artwork, it’s basically dotting ink to make an image. I’ve even grasped the technique of adding different spins to a table tennis ball! I really look forward to seeing how many cases appear in the following week, whether it’s decreasing (good news) or increasing (bad news) either way we must live. By Nicholas Qin - Year 8.

Staying Healthy During Online Learning The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted us all this year, making exams and other events difficult to take place, which is why it is important to stay safe and healthy during lockdown. In this article, I will talk about how to keep healthy so that we can meet the demands of online learning. The first step is to reduce screen time. Because we all have online lessons, it can be challenging as our use of screentime goes over the normal limit, but we can still take actions to reduce our screen time. For example, after lessons, instead of spending more time on our devices, we could take some time to read a book or even just relax. This helps you feel less stressed, and it also gives an opportunity to rest your eyes. The next thing we should do is follow a sleep schedule. The reason for falling asleep during classes and being tired is because of the amount of sleep you are getting. You should sleep for at least 8 hours – but getting more is recommended. Going to sleep early can make you feel more energetic in the morning; also helping your overall performance in studies and your mood during the day. During lockdown, all of us have unusual sleeping schedules, but the key is to keep it consistent each day. Another crucial part of your health is exercising. We are not allowed to go to sports clubs or the gym, which is why we should take initiative and exercise at home. Exercise releases chemicals called hormones in your brain, like serotonin and endorphins, which are great for your mood. We are given exercises in our PE lessons which I personally love doing. Sometimes, going for a walk is the best thing you can do for your health. The weather is also getting warmer so walks these days are even more enjoyable. To make it more fun, put on your roller skates or take you skateboard with you. Don’t forget your mask, in case you come in close proximity with others, but you don’t need to wear it while exercising strenuously – as this can be dangerous. Try to maintain physical distance from other people. Our neighbourhood has started to put out Halloween decorations which makes the walks even more fun! Our health and well-being are very important for us to reach out personal and academic goals so we can’t take it lightly. Stay safe and healthy everyone! By Savera Sidhu - Year 8

UBIQ has taken the decision to not proceed with second-hand buyback purchasing for the 2022 academic year. This is not a decision they have taken lightly as they feel it is a valuable service to provide to the students, and families attending ACG. However, in light of recent and ongoing outbreaks of the highly transmissible Delta variant of Covid-19 in the community and subsequent alert level changes, they strongly feel the need for ongoing caution and care. Even more so given the size of the campus we are based on, and recent cases that created exposure events on campus. For this reason, UBIQ are uncomfortable putting their staff, ACG students and their families in a position of risk. UBIQ sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this will cause and look forward to a safer 2022.
