ACG SUNDERLAND WINGS NEWSLETTER

Vol 18, Term Four, Week Eight, 2 December 2022

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland,

It’s hard to believe we have made it through the penultimate week here at ACG Sunderland.

With camps now done and dusted except for the Year 12 & 13 ones which heads out mid January the students were all back in school this week.

On Tuesday, we were able to celebrate Legacy Day again after it was in recess for the last two years. Legacy Day is the day when all the Year 13 students come back to school and set up a whole lot of games and activities for the rest of the Lower College to get involved with. It’s a massively fun day for all involved, with the staff enjoying it as much as the students do.

I wish to personally thank all the College leaders and Year 13 students for stepping up and organising the event a particular thank you to Mr Keen who oversaw the entire day from start to finish.

Please check the lost property box for your children’s lost uniforms before close of school on Tuesday 6 December.

We have also had videographers and photographers in the school this week for three days as we refresh the marketing shots for all aspects of the school. I wish to thank all the students and staff who assisted in these three very important days for the school.

This Friday was supposed to be our annual picnic at Long Bay, but unfortunately due to bus driver shortages, we were not able to get transport to the beach.

Therefore, we brought the beach and fine weather to Sunderland and were able to enjoy a very relaxed atmosphere here at school for the day.

The College enjoyed music from four school bands in the morning, then a whole raft of activities in the afternoon, with the Primary basically doing exactly what would have taken place at the beach here at school.

I know staff and students were disappointed they could not get to Long Bay, but perhaps the real frustration is the lack of workers across our wonderful country.

I look forward to seeing you all at prizegiving next Tuesday.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Early Learning School

Under 2’s Room

This week, our tamariki played with the animal shape sorter. We are learning shapes and colours with this new toy and developing problem solving skills.

Junior Room

December is upon us, and the Junior Room children have started their Christmas crafts. They used fine motor skills and hand eye coordination to navigate painting within the circles to carefully making finger paint Christmas lights on a beautifully green Christmas tree. Children enjoyed adding their own sparkle to hand made decorations for their very own Christmas tree at home, a great way to begin the festive season!

Legacy Day

It’s a school tradition that takes place annually; a celebration of the end of the school year, and a way for the year 13s to say their final goodbyes: Legacy Day. On Tuesday this week, instead of normal classes, we played games, got dunked and sang karaoke.

I’m sure many will agree with me that the start of summer is the best time of year. The weather is improving, the holidays are near, and Christmas is around the corner. For me, Legacy Day and school Camp are two events that mark the beginning of this joy filled season. With it, Legacy Day brought a taster of summer; ice blocks, sunscreen and a waterslide.

Rather than spending the day in classrooms, we played classic games such as volleyball, dodgeball, multisport and rob the nest for the first part of the day, then morning tea, which doubled as a break to reapply sunscreen since the sun was out with no clouds. For the second part of the day, we played some more unusual games. Some of my favourites were: mirror charades, where one person acted a word out as usual, and a second had to mirror their actions, while everyone else guessed what the word was by watching only the person mirroring. ‘Hello I am’ where a player drew a piece of paper with a name on it and then had to describe who they were while the others guessed; and Dare Pong where a ping pong ball was bounced into a cup with a dare in it which the successful “bouncer” could assign to someone. I had to skip around the field singing ‘Let it Go’ and some students even had to ask Mr Keen for an autograph. To finish off the middle block, we had our traditional Handball competition which is always a blast, and so entertaining to see the finalists being knocked out or holding their position as king.

During lunch, icies were served to everyone and a classic kiwi waterslide was set up on the back field, with soap and a hose. Although I had originally decided not to get wet, once I saw the slide, I couldn’t resist and egged on by my friends, I had to go down it for old times sake; and I don’t regret it!

We chose our next activity the choices being: Family Feud, Musical Chairs, an Engineering Challenge and board games. By this point, everyone was tired and the energy levels were either dropping to exhaustion, or rising to chaotic euphoria. Finally, we had the highlight of the day: karaoke. Based on different school clubs and groups, we went up on the stage and sang (more like screamed) many songs, ranging from Ocean Eyes to Bohemian Rhapsody and Let it Go. Of course, no one was drunk, but from the shout singing it definitely sounded like we were. This was definitely my favourite part of the day, and seeing Mr Jones and Mrs Carter steal the show with Single Ladies was a once in a lifetime experience.

Overall, Legacy Day was a blast, and I’m so excited to do it next year!

Parents and Friends Committee

Dear Parents and Friends of ACG Sunderland,

ACG Sunderland is an independent school whose students are of incredibly diverse ethnicity. From pre school to senior college the school strives to help their students achieve their full potential. The Parents and Friends Committee works alongside this aim of the school.

Parents and Friends is a committee run by volunteers all, unsurprisingly, are friends or families of the school! The committee raises funds to cover items of benefit to the students that are not covered by school fees. In the past this has included such things as donations to the school ball, shade sails over playgrounds, cricket nets, and the planting of a hedge for privacy at the front of the primary playground.

All activities run by Parents and Friends are fun, social activities that help to instil a feeling of belonging throughout all families attending the school. Meetings take place on the first Thursday of every month at 8.30am in the staffroom. Please let Mrs Sonya Eldridge know if you are interested in joining the committee by email: sonya.eldridge@acgedu.com

The next meeting is Thursday 2 February 2023.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland

Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S).

What is our Mission statement?

To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community.

To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination.

How to get involved or get your badge?

We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service.

Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate.
