WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term Two, Week Nine, 2 July

Longing for Summer 期盼夏日 作者: Caitlin O’Connor 8年级 The sun’s out, in its shining, shimmering, splendour,

Snow 雪

Flowers dance, with their petals so tender. The children play in a garden. They say, “We love this garden; it’s great to play.

But it’s getting dark, we must go away.” The sun is happy to see them running, But the summer is over, and the winter is coming.

Frost on my window Everyone is warm at home Every time it snows

The north wind howls And the flowers scowl. “Let the kids play. Stop for a couple hours.” Yet the storm caries on and the children wait, The snow still falls at a soaring rate.

But a small boy sits, in the branches of at tree, With a smile on his face, as happy as can be. He laughs out loud, sticks his arm out, and

The last snowflake falls Sunflowers slowly erupt Winter killed them all

Claire

A small rain drops falls in the palm of his hand. The sun, though hidden, is beginning to cry, Because this touches its heart - it let out a sigh. All the garden, the school, the village, Is covered in snow, a dull white image. But the tree was not covered in frost,

When it rains its pain

It’s bright and alive - the leaves so soft.

When it snows we don’t say no

Below the tree, on a patch of land,

When it shines we grind

With the flowers singing, so bright, not bland. The boy, so happy, that he hugs the tree,

Nicholas Qin

He squeals and swings. He jumps with glee. The Sun is shining, even in winter, For the one little boy, who still longed for summer. 5

Avalanche Season in Norway In a winter of abundant snow and Christmas parties galore, all happiness and pleasure of the holiday faded to zilch when avalanches of rock and snow rained down in bone-crushing, man-mincing sizes from the Scandinavian Mountains of Norway in mid-winter that end of year, immediately . The cold of the European atmosphere was a further hinderance, as it supported the chunks of snow built into small mounds blocking dwelling doorways to freeze to ice, trapping families within their homes as their household’s sides were engulfed within the debris of the disaster. Chaos increased the next day as a snowfall of 2 metres fell from the seemingly innocent blue sky above the brick and tile rooftops of Norwegian households, submerging the various streets and avenues wheeled transport ran on, making difficult for travelling to work or school for adults and children in the country. Many a prayer detailing a wish for warmer climate were said all over the European landscape, as few believed the colder weather at present would do them any more good than it already did the worst. The avalanches of snow kept on coming as consecutive days of snowfall piled up the Scandes with ammunition for more avalanche formation, while last sliver of hope in the Norwegian city Oslo had passed on from suffocation by the thick, white matter as more and more people became trapped inside their homes to the point where food and supplies from people who still had a chance at accessing their property and provision markets were delivered down their chimneys, as the ground level had risen higher than most entrances to households. Abruptly, on a seemingly other day of woe and misery from people imprisoned in their own properties, one trapped family of three in the village of Lillehammer woke from their divans and bedding to discover a sudden ascent in room temperature within their brick house’s living room. As others looked out the window, they sighted a rapid melting of the snow all around the village as a blistering-hot heatwave from the Middle East spread throughout Scandinavian airspace, and leaped into the air in newfound joy and hope at seeing that their streets and buildings no longer were surrounded by snow, but large sploshes of warm water. As children danced in the water puddles and skidded about on the frozen ones, the believers gave silent prayers looking toward the sky – (perhaps to the Heavenly Father, perhaps to luck), while the elderly all hugged and patted each other on the back in tears of emotion, and the adults tested access to their doorways to make sure the heatwave wasn’t a trick. It wasn’t, and the joy of safety from more snow hail was shared by the rest of the nation as life returned to normal - an elderly woman picked up her sewing needles and finished off their granddaughter’s sweater; a child chucked some frozen ice down their brother’s sleeves; and adults went back to their dwellings to prepare scrumptious dinners for their little bundles of mischief, all the while knowing to salt their roads and seal off the Scandinavian ranges during the season of cold to prevent the repetition of history. For Pride month Prism held a bake sale Friday last week, I’m sure many people enjoyed it and in my opinion the bake sale went well since we raised $377.10 for Rainbow Youth. Some students baked for the event while others bought for the event. I had fun baking the goods and even bought some sweets for myself at lunch. Of course, I would have good responses about the bake sale because I baked for it so, here is a student’s insight on the bake sale: It was amazing all of the food was made by students, teachers and parents. They had made cupcakes with rainbow icing, MnM cookies, rainbow cake, Fudge and more. AND one of my friends helped in baking them. Overall, the bake-sale was a blast for everyone, and we will be seeing you next term! Madison McDowall and Maggie Chen, Year 8 6

Holidays are coming soon, and we are all looking forward to it. There are a number of ways we can make these holidays fun, but also productive.

We had a busy term because of exams, so everyone deserves to have some fun! Spend time with friends and family doing some enjoyable things. You could eat out, read a book, or even relax at home. If there is something you have been wanting to do but you haven’t had time to do it, these holidays are the best time to get it done. Holidays are indeed a great time to rejuvenate, recharge and do things that make you happy. While we are having fun, we also need to keep in mind that we have to be well prepared for the next term. Take some time to revise the content covered during this term so that when you come back, you will be ready to start the new term with confidence. Making a calendar of the things which you need to do, with a mix of fun activities, is a great way to plan for the holidays. Another productive task is to choose goals to achieve in a time frame of your choice. These holidays, I am planning to relax, go to the movies, parks and possibly go ice skating. I will spend second week of the holidays attending a leadership programme and volunteering at a local holiday programme which is run by a church free of cost. To conclude, do lots of fun things in the holidays, but don’t forget to be productive! 作者 Savera Sidhu, Year 8
