Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland
Firstly, thank you for all for you thoughts, prayers and best wishes on the passing of my dad last week. Our family has truly appreciated your kindness over this very difficult time. Also, thank you to Mr Stephens, Mrs Chartrand and the rest of the team who continued to lead the school during my absence – as expected they stepped up and did a wonderful job. This work culminated in the Open Evening that was held on Thursday night. As expected this evening was highly successful with 33 families, all very interested in attending our school in the coming years.
Next week on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon and evening we are hosting you all with our Parent/Teacher interviews. Instructions were sent this week on how to access the interview bookings online. If you are still having problems, please see Mrs Sonya Eldridge who will be able to assist you. Today, full academic reports are being sent home with your children, which will summarise the learning, particularly over the Covid lock down period and subsequently the examinations that took place late last term. I know staff are keen to catch up with you all and discuss, in some detail, the findings in these academic reports. If for what ever reason you are not available to meet during the Parent/Teacher interviews, then please make direct contact with the staff concerned and they will make an alternative time for you.

Year Five have this week been on a camp. This is a new venue for ACG Sunderland and therefore, Mrs Leanne Chartrand, Miss Carla White, Mr Sam Baker and myself visited this working farm during the holidays. I know the children will have had a fantastic experience with stories to share over the weekend. In week four, ACG Sunderland will host students from Year Seven to Twelve at our annual Options/Career evening. This is an opportunity for students and parents to hear from Mr Stephens and myself about how we support your children during the decision making process of selecting subjects and then subsequently choosing tertiary providers both here in New Zealand and abroad. With the complications of Covid in 2020 and beyond, we believe competitions for places in New Zealand universities will be very high. Therefore students need to fully understand their options and the process.

Each term the ACG Sunderland Leadership Committee select a project or organisation they feel is relevant to students’ lives. This term our committee has nominated Fleming House to host a selection of fundraising activities in the hopes of raising money for Starship Hospital. Starship Hospital is the life-line for children with over 135,000 patient visits annually. The Starship National Air Ambulance service contributes to its life-saving work, flying critically ill children from various hospitals around New Zealand to specialist paediatric care at Starship. This Air Ambulance requires $1.5 million each year in funding to continue helping the children of New Zealand. To support Starship Hospital our leadership committee has organised movie nights for all students, a primary colouring competition, a Talent Show to be held on the last day of term three (25 September) along with a space themed Mufti Day. Please show your support and get behind this worthy cause – Starship!
