ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term Two, Week Five, 3 June 2022

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, This week at both assemblies I spoke about two key points. The first was all about teaching and learning post the examination process. Getting back to normal lessons and recognising that for most students, the work at the beginning of the year will not be assessed again (unless you are a senior or completing Checkpoint). I also thanked all the staff again for the amount of work they have completed over the past 2-3 weeks. By the way, staff are now busy writing reports, and these will be distributed on the last day of term. The second point I made at assembly was our confirmation on focussing on our core values and one in particular – that being “Respect”. The first element of this discussion has been the idea of respecting yourself – seeing all the positives in yourself.

If your child catches the bus to or from school, please remind them that it is mandatory for face masks to be worm at all times while on the bus.

The continuation of that thought is to respect the uniform and wear it with pride. I know Mrs Chartrand and her team have been doing uniform inspections over the past week or so, and most students are now wearing the uniform very well in Primary. The College are also getting much better. We did have a quick chat about neck sizes, etc., and that if you cannot do up the top button then the shirt is too small, and you will need to purchase some more. Also, if badges have been lost or broken, then replacements can be bought from Mrs Ogden at reception. We all appreciate that over the past two years, our uniform and presentation has not been at front of mind, as we battled with Covid. However, now with a new norm being established, I want to get back to where ACG Sunderland needs to be. This weekend is the first of two long weekends that are occurring in June. I do wish everyone a safe holiday weekend and look forward to catching up next Tuesday. Stay safe.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Value for the next week is: Teamwork

The combined action of a group, especially when effective and efficient.. If someone you live with gets COVID-19 While you can get COVID-19 again at any time, the chance of reinfection in the 3 months after recovery is low. After you have recovered, you do not need to isolate as a Household Contact for 3 months if someone else in your household tests positive during this time. 2

Under 2 Room Our little ones enjoyed the group reading time un the Under 2’s room.

Junior Room The children of the Junior Preschool Room have had a learning focus of gross motor skills. The children have been guided to jump, balance, and hop - all supporting their large muscles group development.

Children have enjoyed being able to go under, over and around varying obstacles within the outdoor environment, while learning and strengthening their muscles through active play and participation. 3

Senior Room Talofa lava! This week is the Samoan Language week and the Senior Room have been focusing on activities based on this occasion. The children are learning to count to ten in Samoan, singing a couple of Samoan songs with actions, and using leaves in the art area to create their own patterns of a ‘siapo.’

The children are also practising their fine motor skills in writing the letter ‘p’ and getting familiar with this letter sounds when listening to songs and identifying objects that start with this letter.

"No Planet B" Consumerism in New Zealand Every day in New Zealand, people spend their hard-earned money on new clothes, new shoes and new technology, when typically, they already have a perfectly good version at home. But do people ever think about the consequences of “following along with the trends”? Of course, social media strongly influences this and has been the starter of trends and fashion crazes. Apps such as TikTok, Instagram and Facebook all help people to show their new Nike shoes or share a review on the latest Apple product. But when are people going to start asking themselves; “do I really need this, or does social media make me think I need this?” Most of the time, you don’t need it. By giving in to these trends and new fashion styles, we are not only wasting perfectly good clothing by replacing it with new, trendier clothes, because our old clothes were “so last season,” but we are using up the Earth’s recourses that, to be blunt, the Earth doesn’t have. If we continue heading down this road; thriving on our healthy, happy Earth, living at our peak, we are going to burn out. Our food is going to burn out. Our resources are going to burn out. Our Earth is going to burn out. And there will be nothing anyone can do. So, before you buy that new jumper, new pair of shoes, new phone or new designer bag, just think to yourself: “do I really need this?” Just one sacrifice, as simple as that can help significantly because after all, nothing is going to change if we don’t start somewhere.

UCL Final Times are changing…immensely How hard is it to wake up at 7AM on a Sunday morning, right? For many people, waking up at 10 in the weekends is already a mad achievement. Well, I couldn’t care less of when you wake up, so let’s get into my recount on the annual UEFA Champions League Finals: Liverpool FC VS Real Madrid CF! To speak on general data, Real Madrid has over 400 million fans, whilst Liverpool is just chilling on the side with slightly over 100 million. Real Madrid has won the overall championship 13 times as for Liverpool just 6. These stats may only finalize one conclusion for you: “Real Madrid will win!” and yes, you’re right they did win again last Sunday (sadly). As evening falls at France’s major national stadium, Stade De France, fans started piling up both inside and outside, many fans were trapped outside the stadium due to security issues plus both pitch and stadium invasions. This resulted in a 30-minute kick off delay, which caused most fans to lose their excited edge. On the other hand, outside the stadium was absolute chaos, smoke bombs were released, team apparels were destroyed in front of the main entrance in response to both teams weak start off. As we reach the 59th minute of the match, that’s when things started to rumble! Real Madrid’s striker Vinicius Jr. scored the first goal of the match, settling the scores to a 1 – 0 lead. The fans went wild in the crowd, as it was scored in the second half, it would be impossible for Liverpool to catch up. I realized how toxic Madrid fans were, and I was fuming. 5 minutes after they had scored, I already had DM’S piling up saying “L for Liverpool,” and I did no appreciate this. However, after a rather nail-biting game of 2 teams struggling to score in a 90-minute match; I had lost hope. I really hope Liverpool can make a comeback in the next league – or else I’m burning my L.F.C Jersey.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S). What is our Mission statement? To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community. To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination. How to get involved or get your badge? We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service. Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate. Below is the information for the badges:
