ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term Three, Week Six, 3 September 2021
Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, As I look out the window on a fabulous Spring morning, with not a cloud in the sky or a zephyr of wind to speak of, it’s easy to forget that, just down the road, our little village of Kumeu was ravaged by a one-in-fifty year flood only two days ago. Most of you will have seen the photos, and some may have been caught up in this disaster, which is still being cleaned up. One staff member has had 60m of her driveway washed away in a massive landslide and currently cannot leave her property. This is on top of the current pandemic that Auckland continues to battle with. So, it is lovely to have a little sun on our faces and blue sky visible as we look towards at least another three weeks in Lockdown Alert Level 4 and then 3. Our Senior students will all be preparing for upcoming online examinations, beginning next Monday morning. This type of assessment is new to us, but with experience from Europe and Asia in our group of schools to lean on, we feel very comfortable with the decisions we have made.
OPEN DAY – 16 OCTOBER 2021 10.30am – 2.30pm

Mr Stephens has sent out a page of ‘FAQ’ that hopefully covers off any last-minute questions which parents and students may have. Please don’t hesitate to communicate with Mr Stephens directly if you need any further clarification. As I have outlined in previous communications, we are not confident that the high-stake Cambridge assessments will be able to take place, so these upcoming exams will potentially form an important component in generating a final grade for your children. I would also like to personally thank the number of parents who have sent letters of support and gratitude to senior leadership and individual teachers. It means a great deal to know that our decisions and actions are being appreciated and endorsed. We also understand that it may be hard to have young teenagers doing the graft at home, with our learning expectations, while your children’s friends, attending other schools, are gaming and messing about. I think we will look back at this generation of youngsters and will be able to observe the people who worked doing these lockdown periods and the ones who had extended holiday periods, doing very little. I personally wish our seniors all the very best for next week and may the sun continue to shine. Take care everyone. Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Preschool Online Learning
Monday this week our preschool children made bird houses for birds. This kind of problem-solution thinking builds engineering skills and gives kids experience with how things work. And the finished product gives them a sense of accomplishment and pride.
Today Preschool children got an opportunity to tell and read the stories to other children. We often think of story time as adults telling kids stories, or reading storybooks. But we probably less often think of story time as an opportunity for kids to be creative. There are benefits to kids telling their own stories like Storytelling increases self-esteem. With the greatest risk comes the greatest sense of achievement. Through storytelling, children learn techniques for gaining and holding an audience's attention (eye contact, use of voice, gestures, pacing, etc.) Through storytelling children are encouraged to listen to others, whether it be the storyteller or others listening to the story. They learn to be more patient and to let others speak; they begin to understand that others may not interpret things in the same way they do.

Now is the time to start planning for a standout application! The Scholarship will recognise outstanding academic ability as well as personal qualities for future success, such as integrity, leadership, boldness of vision, exceptional drive, energy and a capacity for work. *Applications close 15 October 2021 The ACG Founders Scholarship honours a group of people whose vision, expertise and dedication led to the establishment of the Senior College of New Zealand in 1995. From 2018, one Scholarship is awarded annually. The recipient will be a student who is currently studying at one of ACG’s secondary schools in New Zealand and who plans to commence a course of university study the following year. It may be held in conjunction with other awards. The Scholarship will recognise outstanding academic ability as well as personal qualities for future success, such as integrity, leadership, boldness of vision and exceptional drive, energy and a capacity for work. The inaugural recipient of the ACG Founders Scholarship, Alex Pentchev, graduated in 2018. Now he is studying Medicine at the University of Sydney and aspires to work in medical research. “The scholarship has opened up fantastic opportunities such as semester exchanges to universities all around the world. I no longer have to worry about finances and I can focus solely on my studies, which has been extremely helpful during the stressful transition to university. All around, it feels as if a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I now have the ability to do anything I want in education without worrying about money.” – Alex Pentchev Download the form here or see below. https://www.sunderland.acgedu.com/admissions/scholarships

Getting Used to Things at Sunderland as A Year 7 Student At first it wasn’t easy. Having 11 subjects, and different teachers for each of them. It was definitely exciting but, scary nonetheless. In other primary schools, you only had one teacher who taught you everything, and that was only Maths, English, P.E., and Inquiry. But now it’s different, and better. You’re learning so many more amazing things in all subjects, and you have homework which wasn’t a thing in primary. Primary – to me – was more for the fun of school; you enjoy life with your friends and learn the basics. Sunderland has prepared me for the future and made me so much more independent and responsible; and I am very happy about getting this wonderful opportunity. However, you still get your free time, which is important. When I first heard about having your own lockers, I was surprised. Having many subjects requires you to store your books and P.E. gear in a locker. Having to get the correct books every day was just one of the ways Sunderland has made me independent. Finally, the most important difference from Primary to Sunderland was what you learn. To be honest what we learned in Primary was a very different perspective than Sunderland, and much less in-depth than what we learn at Sunderland. But, eventually, I started to get the hang of how things were and soon it felt as easy as Primary. By Akarsh Shankar – Year 7

Fight for Survival - Part 2 Hours had passed and the storm was still blowing at full force. The boy was shivering, his teeth were chattering, and a numb feeling was spreading across his body like a virus. The winds howled, tearing at his jacket, and threatening to send the poor boy flying. His messy black hair was blowing around his head, temporarily obscuring his vision from time to time. The sun was getting ready to set, indicated by the sky getting darker. His senses were becoming more dull as the storm worsened by the second. The boy’s chances of survival were becoming increasingly slim. Just when he was about to give up hope, he spotted a dim light in the distance. Perhaps there was a chance for him after all. With newfound determination, he powered through the snow until he arrived at a cottage. It was small and appeared cosy as there was a bright glow being emitted from one of its windows. Smoke was billowing out of the chimney, suggesting a warm fire was burning inside. The boy took a glance at the outside world he had been stuck in for years. The snow was pelting him in chunks as forceful as ever and the winds were so strong they may as well have toppled an elephant. A lake could be spotted nearby, frozen over by ice and no doubt filled with fish. Turning his attention back to the cottage, he attempted to peek through the window. Alas, he had no luck as the glass had been covered by a strong frost. The only thing he knew to be true was that there was someone inside. The boy used almost all his remaining strength to clamber up the stone steps to the cottage where he was met with a sturdy wooden door. Managing a weak knock, he stepped back, unsure whether he should expect the worst. After a few moments, the door swung open and the boy almost cowered in fear of the tall figure standing before him. To be continued… By Isheeta Lal – Year 9

Does doing schoolwork in bed affect your motivation?
During lockdown, the urge to stay in your pyjamas, get comfy and do all your work in your cosy bed is strong. But, in order to stay productive and motivated, you must resist this urge! So, does doing schoolwork in bed affect your motivation? Yes! Working in bed can be tempting, but it isn’t good for your posture and can distract you. Additionally, it decreases productivity because there is limited space on your bed. Looking at the spreads of paper and books may exhaust you. On the other hand working at a decent sized desk can allow you to organize your material more efficiently. You can get distracted by the things in your room such as a tv and other electronics which will cause you to procrastinate instead of doing work. So, getting a desk and maybe even a separate office will help you focus more. If you work in bed your brain will link being in bed to sleep and will make you less energetic and increase tiredness. This will affect your sleep too because your brain will associate your bed to working and your mind will continue to think about work and other things, resulting in less sleep. In conclusion, if you work on a desk, not in bed, you will not only increase your productivity, but also get more sleep! Which is a pretty good outcome. By Maggie Chen - Year 8

The implementation has gone smoothly and we’d like to thank parents who have amended their reference when making payment by bank transfer to the Communication Ref No. A small number of parents have not recognised the noreply-jde@inspirededu.com address that the invoices have been sent from, or have found that the emails have gone direct to junk. If you can please check these points if information is not coming through and, as always, please contact Mandy Allen at mandy.allen@acgedu.com or 09 838 7070 if you have any accounts questions.

Colouring Competition – NZ Cancer Society Kia Ora, This term, ACG Sunderland is supporting the 'NZ Cancer Society' for our Term 3 charity. The Cancer Society of New Zealand is currently the leading non-government organisation dedicated to reducing the incidence and impact of cancer and ensuring cancer care for everyone in New Zealand. It is an independent charity. With recent Lockdowns, our fundraising events at school has been a challenge. Nonetheless, we have put in place a Colouring Competition for the students to do during the lockdown period. Students received an email from their House Leaders with a PDF File of the Colouring Sheet. Once we are back in school, they can submit their sheet at Reception with a simple gold coin donation. With this year's Street Appeal for Daffodil Day cancelled, donating through our school is the perfect opportunity for you to show your support! You may also directly donate to the NZ Cancer Society via this link below: https://www.daffodilday.org.nz/acgsunderland Thank you so much for your help, Stay Safe!
