WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term Two, Week Four, 4 June 2021
Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, With us all watching the rainfall in Canterbury and the subsequent hundred-year flood come down the river valleys, it is a reminder to us all that we are now in winter, with all the challenges this season brings. Firstly, I wish to congratulate the entire campus for their excellent transition into the winter uniforms. Everyone is wearing it so very well. Yesterday, our staff had their flu jab and in subsequent weeks, the staff will be having our Covid vaccinations too. I encourage parents of children who do have respiratory issues particularly to get their children to have the flu jab. It really does make a significant difference. I have had the pleasure of watching a number of Netball and Basketball games in the last week or so. Again, I have been impressed with quality of play and sportsmanship displayed also. I have been very proud of our young people! As I write my newsletter this week, I can hear the staff band practising upstairs ready for our annual ‘Battle of the Bands’ held on Friday, the last day of term. Mr O’Connor tells me we already have nine student bands signed up for the Battle of the Band competition.
Whole School Cross Country – Wednesday 9 June 2021
ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland
During this term, a number of our school bands are competing in ‘Smoke Free Rockquest’, too. Last week ‘Sweet Can’t Wait’ with Khushi Thakar, Keshalia Nelson, Benita Jaikumar, Joshua Zhao and Willis Weng all from Year Nine competed in the Band competition and did very well. Next week ‘The Five-Minute Band’ with Amelie and Fabian Villars are competing in the duo section. They are also playing in a concert tonight at the Te Atatu Community Centre from 6.00pm if you have time to pop in and see them. Grandparents’ Day has been a wonderful success this year. A special thankyou to all the staff and students who have spent weeks preparing for this very special day. I am sure everyone enjoyed the enjoyed the experience, a great opportunity to celebrate the school’s diverse community. Many Grandparents will have travelled from out of Auckland to be here, and I personally thank you for your commitment to our school and family culture we have been able to establish. This weekend is a long weekend, so I do hope you are able to enjoy the elongated time with your families.
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

If you shop at your local New World, Pak’n Save and participating Four Square stores, please look for the Yummy Apples. Please purchase either bags with cut-our labels or individual apples with yummy stickers. One cut-out label is worth 10 apple stickers. Place the Yummy stickers on the Sticker Collection sheets in your child’s classroom and place the cut-out labels on the Cut-Out Label Collection Sheets in your child’s classroom. The Yummy stickers will then be converted into a winning share of $200,000 sports prize pool from DG Sport. The school can choose the sports gear from a list of DG Sports Packs. Promotion finishes at end of Term Three. 3

STUDENTS VOICE
ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland
A Overview of the Internal Exams We all know that exams have just passed. Many students have received their scores over these few days, some positive some negative. But we might all wonder why exams are necessary, I certainly know many people who think exams are useless but, is that true? Yes, it stresses you out, parents have expectations their kids might find hard to meet and it takes up perfectly good days of class time. Here’s what Andy Wang in Year 8 has to say about his review of the exams: “Examinations are the most stressful times at our age, having to do 9 exams nonstop within 3 days of time. The feeling when you enter the exam room is always one word, nervous, But as soon as the exam starts, your thought process changes rapidly into ‘Oh yes, I studied this stuff, this is going to be quite easy.’ to ‘Oh dear, I don’t know any of these things.’ Resulting in sitting the exam with double the stress. And the story doesn’t end there. As soon as you exit the examination room, your stress then evolves to anxiety. Questioning: ‘How did you do?’ ‘What questions did you skip?’ ‘Which did you guess?’ ‘And who got top?’ On the first day back at school, your brain anticipating an attack of bad grades, you get your exam results back, and you have two options as to how you feel either you want to share your results to the public if you did well, or you would rather shove and hide your exam papers into the depths of your maze-like schoolbag.” Through Andy we shed light to the highly stressful part of exams. But in hindsight, exams aren’t all too bad. Exams (as stated by our principal several times before) are extremely beneficial for learning feedback. They help students realize their weak points in subjects and might even give students a sense of accomplishment when receiving good scores. I have received my test scores and over all I am happy with my exam results and, enjoyed the exam experience so much more than I expected. I have learnt and noted my mistakes and, plan to try even harder in the end of year exams. So, all together I hope you might be able to realize how important exams really are to help guide you through your learning experience in your college years!

ACG Sunderland Students Invoices As I mentioned during January, we moved to a new finance system at the start of the year. The implementation has gone smoothly and we’d like to thank parents who have amended their reference when making payment by bank transfer to the Communication Ref No. A small number of parents have not recognised the noreply-jde@inspirededu.com address that the invoices have been sent from, or have found that the emails have gone direct to junk. If you can please check these points if information is not coming through and, as always, please contact [EMAIL] at [NAME] or [NUMBER] if you have any accounts questions.
